So Friday night was fun. A bunch of us started walking to the party. Donray came to the party later. Chris, Jenna, and Nadia all felt sick and stayed home. Anyways, we start walking and we're about 1/3 of the way there when it started to drizzle a little bit. Leah and Jill decided to take a taxi, while Kari, Jeff, Alissa, Julie, and I decided to keep walking. We walked under roof-tops for most of it and managed to keep fairly dry until it started to pour and we ran out of roofs. I'm sure it was the funniest thing to see... a bunch of white people running through the streets. This rain was a downpour too. We're talking buckets and buckets of water; one after the other. We were running and laughing the whole ... read more

just wanted to say a quick hello and update you on my whereabouts. i am now in boca del toro, panama. i arrived here yesterday after spending a few days in puerto viejo, costa rica. puerto viejo was amazing and very difficult to leave. my friend jim and i rented some bikes and rode to all of the beaches south of puerto viejo...if we went a little bit further, we could have rode our bikes into panama. it was tempting but the heat and sun were a bit of a deterrent. we arrived in boca del toro yesterday. the costa rica-panama border crossing, on the carribean coast, was pretty cool. to get from costa rica to panama you have to walk over an abandoned train bridge and the country border is in the middle of the ... read more

I have officially lost my first battle with nature. After spending the last week and a half in San Carlos and trekking through multiple rainforests on more than 20 farms, the heat, mosquito bites, spider bites and poisonous plants have finally gotten the better of us. My 30+ insect bites have now turned into 89 welts that are driving me bonkers and Mike’s quick brush with fire ants have encouraged us to take a break from the woods. Don’t get me wrong. San Carlos is an awesome area. We’ve met some really great people and seen some beautiful sites, however San Carlos is quite a large area and we now know that the lowlands are probably not for us (Muelle, Santa Rosa, Buenos Aires, etc.). There is still hope however that the mountainous area around Juan ... read more

Welcome to the most beautiful lake in the world; Lago de Atitlan. Crystal blue water surrounded by volcanoes. We took a boat to a remote little village of about 600 people called San Marco. On the main foot path we met a lady named Lily, from New York, who directed us to her boyfriends place called Acculax. This place was amazing…just off the shores of the lake with incredible stain glass in every room. We settled in and met up with Lily who organizes a community after school program with local children. We spent a few hours playing and making necklaces. It was a great experience to interact with such innocence. Later that afternoon we walked around the village and found our way to the Moon Fish restaurant, were we had Tempe and Tofu for dinner ... read more

We zijn ... read more

After a long day of ponponara practice, Sarah and I headed for home and promptly passed out for a few hours. We almost didn't get up Saturday night and once we did, we really had no ambition to go out. Being the troopers that we are however, we prettied ourselves up for a night of dancing and went out to explore a new bar we had heard about from some friends. What we discovered that night: (11pm-2am) 1. It is easy to make an ass out of yourself by wandering around the first floor of a building when the bar is on the second floor. 2. The security people will notice your confused expressions and lead you upstairs. 3. When you ask the bartender to surprise you with a mixed drink, it will be cheap and ... read more

Ok guys, I know a few of you have been waiting for a few of these photos so here goes... We're staying at an amazing hostel called 'Brunela' (which is the spanish, feminine version of the name Bruce, and also the name of the leading lady in a novel written by the owner - go figure..). Since we're here for a few weeks Juan (the owner) is only charging us $4 a night, for which we get the BEST coffee in the world free every morning, a cosy room which we share with one other guy, Todd - American, (we get the whole mezzanine upstairs), free use of the surf boards and a WHOLE LOT OF FUN. Brunela is basically a bachelor pad for surfers (mostly from argentina and uruguay at the moment) and Ali and ... read more

Hi all, I'm back in Santa Teresa (again!, what can I say? we love this place!) which means I can blog to my hearts content. So here goes.. A photo update of Profelis, the centre Ali and I have just left after working and doing research there for the last month. We had very rewarding experiences at Profelis, enjoying the company of wonderful, like-minded, people who were willing to share all manner of information. It is a real shame they are closing down this particular centre, a result of difficulties with the owner private land on which the centre is based. They have a directive based in San Carlos however, and the cats will be relocated there at the end of September. Welfare standards are very high in both places. I wish I could go into ... read more

To those of you that have contacted Richard or I requesting a new journal entry...HERE! OK! IIT TOOK ME FOREVER BUT DON´T YOU GO WORRYING ABOUT THAT!!!! And so we reach the last leg of our trip. Richard doesn´t like me saying that or starting any sentences with the words "when I get home...". So I won't! MEXICO CITY I was a little scared of Mexico City as every time we mentioned it to someone they´d do that sucking through the teeth thing and then tut and shake their heads before saying "You must be so careful, Mexcico City is a dangerous place.."¨etc. etc. We arrived at a much nicer than scummy LA airport and found everybody to be very helpful. Tourist Info at the airport kindly arranged a hotel for us for $30 per night. ... read more
