Hola!! We eventually got to Antigua after a long long day of travelling from Lake Atitlan, San pedro and stayed in the Black Cats Hostel ...best hostel we have been to so far, atmosphere, people and food were great! It´s a very colonial town just like San Christobal but not as nice, Met up with Mor and Gadi the 2 Israli guys on our first night, went to lots of little coffe shops, markets and bars and even went salsa dancing in Ricks to the Buena Vista Social CLub....not quiet salsa but we did our own thing anyway! went out for one of the English girls birthdays to a club there... the vodka&cokes were 2 Quetzals..20 cent!!! Climbed Volcano Pacaya, its a live volcano, Karen&I, Mor, Mike & Gadi climbed to the top at night with ... read more

Hay guys it has been while since I have written and I have had many adventures over the last month or so….. From Mayan ruins in the steaming hot rainforest to coral reefs of Belize and the fiery volcanoes of the chilly western highlands, of course without forgetting volunteering in a small town in northern Guatemala. The majority of my time has been spent in San Andres a small town in the Peten region of Guatemala doing voluntary work. The town is situated on the edge of the lake Peten-Itza with a population of around 4000 and is typical of the region. The first thing that you notice is that there are children everywhere as I was soon to learn was because the average size of a family is 12. Also there are animals everywhere; It ... read more

Rising, like always, before the sun does, we got up and ready to go catch the 9 a.m. ferry that was a walk, a bus ride, and a taxi ride away. I would just like to add that it only took me 40 minutes to take a shower and get ready and I was ready to go on time! Like I said in my last blog, anyone who knows be knows that that is quite the accomplishment for me. I think the Caribbean is a good influence :) La Ceiba is much more hot and sticky than Comayagua and we felt its full effects while walking around and waiting for buses. After we left the hotel, we caught a bus downtown in order to catch another bus that would take us out to the ferry. However, ... read more

Everyone has a different definition of Paradise. The following definitions are courtesy of Dictionary.com par‧a‧dise  ˈpær əˌdaɪs, -ˌdaɪz - Show Spelled Pronunciation 1. heaven, as the final abode of the righteous. 2. an intermediate place for the departed souls of the righteous awaiting resurrection. 3. (often initial capital letter ) Eden (def. 1). 4. a place of extreme beauty, delight, or happiness. 5. a state of supreme happiness; bliss. People often ask why we moved here or what we like most about being here. From the first time we visited Costa Rica, I was convinced that it was closer to heaven than anywhere else on earth. Sure other places are beautiful but do they capture your heart and soul as Costa Rica does? Just ask anyone who returns from their first trip here. On our flight ... read more

Wednesday started bright and early. We caught the local bus (which is actually just a school bus) to the middle of town where we waited for a bus to the Ferry. We waited... and we waited. There were many buses but none to the Ferry, so we ended up taking a taxi. Once at the Ferry, we bought our round-trip tickets and waited for our boat. We realised that our boat was MUCH smaller than the one going to Roatan but was cute and meant not as many people, more choice of where to sit, and that the boat would go faster, therefore getting us there quicker. It was a pretty nice ride actually. It took us about an hour, but it was so nice to look out at the mountains in the distance and the ... read more

For the past month or so I’ve not been feeling well. As the pain in my kidneys began to be unbearable, (Bill thought I was getting unbearable) it was time to realize a trip to the doctor was in my immediate future. I have or my body has a history of creating kidney stones that are unfortunately too large to pass. I’ve undergone no less than twelve surgeries for removal of said stones. Bill was tempted to make standing appointments at the local hospital in AZ every two years for lithotripsy. After the last surgery with Dr. Sunshine, yep that’s his name it was suggested that I drink abnormal amounts of lemonade to help break down the stones and avoid future surgeries. I took his advice to the extreme, eating whole lemons until I had to ... read more

Yet another of our early, pre-dawn starts saw us waiting for a (predictably) late minibus to take us to Volcan Pacaya, Guatemala's most active volcano. There was a bit of a groan when an ancient yellow US school bus turned up, complete with a faded 'Your kids are our business' sticker. We weren't about to complain to the driver though as he was armed. The volcano used to be a hotbed of tourist-targeted crime, so the tourist police now patrol the area, but you can never be too careful. In fact, our group was escorted by 2 security guards on horseback. Not sure how useful they'd be though with a combined age of less than Gemma. Anyway, the volcano is an impresive sight, and we were lucky with the cloudless weather. It took us about ... read more

Tuesday morning we were up nice and early and heading to meet up with everyone at the Chinese Restaurant, to organise ourselves for the parade. Jenna and I decided to buy shirts from Mendel's that matched our ponponeras. We also wore shite skirts to match theirs. We all looked so cute. I loved it. I couldn't believe the outfits some schools had. The majorettes wore very elaborate costumes as I'm sure you'll see in my pictures. Our girls were by far the cutest. Jenna and I were so proud of what they did. It was SUCH a hot day and we were all sweating like crazy but it was a lot of fun. We saw all our local friends in the crowd. In the evening we headed to Rolando’s friend’s beachfront house. The house was basic, but we had our own room with an air conditioner. We made dinner together and went for a late night swim in the fish shaped pool to cool off. We spent the next few days hanging around in hammocks and swiming to combat the humidity. The ocean was very violent. The waves were huge. We went for swims with extreme caution. Every 5 seconds we had to dive to the bottom to avoid being tossed around like a rag doll. Occasionally, a wave would follow another wave closely and catch us off guard and toss us around a washing machine. Fortunately the ground was rock free so the worst that would happen was a little disorientation and black volcanic sand in all ... read more
