I know, I know, this is really really late in coming out (blame the publisher!).... But here it is (better late than never I say). Tikal Okay, so to get to Tikal, (one of the largest Mayan sites) I used a small town called Flores as a base.... this was a pretty small town (about 200km from the GC/Belize border) and arriving with only about $20 USD hoping for a bank was a bad call (it was Sunday and they were all closed or broken) BUGGER! So, I used my trusty supply of travellers cheques (backup cash basically) and managed to get through the next day or so. Anyways, I booked in with the two Aussies and the French guy for the Tikal Sunrise Tour (yeah, up at 5am!) which I nearly missed because I slept ... read more

Okay I couldn't come to Costa Rica, conservation capital of the world without getting a little more conservation concious (not that that is easy when you spend so much time with Zoe), but here goes. I semi appologise for the rant, but not completely. We visited Monteverde, which is famous for its cloud forest, anyone who watched Blue Peter as a child probably had some sort of fund raising effort to buy some rainforest somewhere, and in Monteverde there is a huge tract owned my children. (So not everything is waste of time). The cloud forest is perched on the continental divide - where Pacific meets Atlantic, so has a huge variety of plant and animal life. It boasts more variety of trees and birds than all of Europe or the US in a few 100 ... read more

The awesome news; Jenna and I are now leading a cheerleading team. They are called Ponponaras here (literal translation being "girls who use pom poms"). We found out yesterday that they wanted Cheerleaders marching in the parade next week with the school band, majorettes (with batons) and the students from grade 5 and up. So Jenna and I had a practice with them after school. It went pretty well but we have 5 days to choreograph a march/routine to 8 songs that the band is playing. Jenna rehearsed with them today because I was supposed to be tutoring.... right now in fact, however, Rey hasn't showed up and I'm assuming it's now not happening so here I sit updating my blog, watching Scrubs in English with Spanish subtitles... awesome that we have cable set up. There ... read more

With a thunder-like rumble, a spurt of bright orange broke the velvet darkness of the cool night. Mesmerized, oblivious to the pesky mosquitoes, we couldn’t take our eyes off the incredible sight of red-hot rocks being hurled out of the top of the nearby mountain and tumbling and breaking up down the steep slopes. This was Volcano Arenal, one of the most active volcanoes in the world and we were lucky enough to catch it on a clear night. After basking in the luxuriousness of jungle hot-springs during the day, it was the perfect way to spend the evening. Thus we spent a few days of Nana and Pop-pop’s visit. Since I haven’t written for a while, I figured I needed a dramatic beginning. At the end of July, for the last week of the summer ... read more

As one might be able to tell from the title above, my students have a brilliant command of our classroom language, Spanglish. I can't think of the perfect translation of desfilar, but it more or less means to line up and march (i.e. for a parade). Escuela Bilingue Honduras, grades 5-seniors, will be marching in a parade on Tuesday morning at 6a.m. and my students were less then enthusiastic during our 2 hours of practice in the blazing sun. It was rather amusing however, to watch them learn how to march from a cadet in the Honduran army that spent just as much time flirting with thier teachers as he did teaching them how to march. Precision and order just does not correspond with the way things are usually done here, so marching is a riot. ... read more

Mike and I arrived in San Carlos on Thursday of last week and it seems like every day we’re in this area, the more we feel at home. San Carlos is quite a large area. It’s more like a county containing many small towns such as Ciudad Quesada, Muelle, La Fortuna and Santa Rosa. It’s northwest of San Jose in case anyone is looking at a map. On the way to San Carlos, Mike decided we would diverge from the route we knew and see some towns we hadn’t yet visited. Maps of Costa Rica, however, tend to be a bit lacking - as does road signage - and, needless to say, we got a bit lost. We ended up on some bad 4x4 roads. For the first time we found ourselves uttering the words, “We’re ... read more

Having thoroughly brushed up on our Spanish we made our way to our next volunteer project, in Hawaii. Not the American Hawaii, but a very small village on the Pacific coast of Guatemala and one of the main nesting sites for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. This was of course accompanied by the obligatory super long bus journey but we made all our connections on the magic buses without any hitches so it was a smooth 11 hours. We arrived at the project around midday and were shown round and briefly told what the volunteers did. The majority of the work was going to be at night so we were advised to get a bit of sleep after our travelling, having no problem with being told to sleep we duely obliged and woke up feeling refreshed ... read more

I can honestly say that I have not had a dull day with my fifth graders. On Friday, I told them if they spoke Spanish during English classes, they would have to translate their favorite song from Spanish to English and hand it into me by Monday. This is my favorite translation handed to me today. It is a reggaeton song by Daddy Yankee called Rompe translated to English. (FYI-Reggaeton is the equivelent to rap or hip hop in the States). "Break it, Break it, Break it, Break it down. Are you ready? My boom it doesn't limit at the time to brake her boom boom. The hottest asses than her racoon. It's time to loose the control." Apparently, racoons have hot asses. Who knew?! Even apart from my classes, my day was fun today. I ... read more
