She came to me in Roatan one or two days after my arrival. She is no longer with me. Another guy took her from me while in Nicaragua, He gave me no warning and like me he believed in possession being 9 tenths of the law. There was no real warning, I got complacent I guess and took her for granted. I now have to wake up without her screaming at me, and she illuminated my way as we were left in the dark during the first stages of the trip. That poor bastard, he will not be able to use her as I could, but never mind I have a better one in England. I miss you sony ericsson . 2 weeks in Cuba is definitely not enough to understand this country.. Spent most of the time in Habana, and visited Viñales region (West Cuba). Didn´t head East due to an approaching hurricane, lack of $ and lack of time! First impressions of Habana is of a beautiful old city (if very crumbling.. apparently about 300 buildings a year just fall down, which I can believe.. The old colonial buildings in Habana Vieja are in such disrepair that some are held up with scaffolding, and there are many gaps where entire buildings are missing! The streets are noisy and buzzing with life as people hang out on pavements and in doorways, and of course.. MUSIC.. blaring from every street from dawn to well past dusk! .. such a great atmosphere.. and so much energy The night ... read more

Its Friday and I am well rested. I went to take a nap yesterday afternoon at about 5p.m. and I woke up at about 5a.m. this morning. I am ready to take on the world (which to me is a small classroom labeled 5A)! I have some good stories from today or maybe they are just funny to me because I got so much sleep. Upon arriving today, I had a little guy come up to me and say "Meees, you look beautiful today." Followed by, "Mees, also I forget my homework." What can I say? It was a good try. I then had another kiddo who asked. "Mees, I go to the bathroom but really I leave and go to mall, but you believe me I go to bathroom, OK?" "No." Then he proceeds to ... read more

When we were out shopping with our “interior decorator” (see earlier entries) we discovered that prices would actually get significantly higher than the ticketed prices on items when the shopkeepers realized that you’re a gringo. So when we found a place that sold patio furniture that we liked, we were afraid what to expect when we asked for 3 sets in my broken Spanish. These places work like car-dealers in the US, where the shop-keeper needs to call the fabricator for a final price, regardless of the ticketed price. In the past this was when the price went up. At our local store, they actually made us a deal, coming down on all the sets! So, we ordered our furniture two weeks ago and picked it up today. It came out perfectly, and we decided to ... read more

School is going well. I can't really complain. Well, I guess I can. lol. The way that the school is set up, it's very open. You'd think this was a good thing but sound travels SO easily. Even when no one in my class is talking and the door is shut, there is a constant buzz. This causes my students to think they can also talk and then much classroom management with noise must be executed. I'm getting used to it but it can also be frustrating at times. Apparently many teachers are experiencing this though. I sent home my first letter to a parent tonight. I had Chris translate it into Spanish. I have one boy who never is prepared for class. He's still missing textbooks, leaves books at home, and today did not even ... read more

Mike, Gerardo and I have just gotten back from a few days in San Carlos. What a great place! This is the third time we have ventured around the area and seem to enjoy the town more and more. We decided to head back up there for the day and check out a farm we had looked at last week. Funny part was that we didn’t expect to spend the night so we had no change of clothes, no toothbrushes, no hair brush, etc. What fun! Toothbrushes were easy enough to obtain but forget about a hairbrush (it took me 20 minutes to brush the dreads out of my hair this evening) and a change of clothes was simply not happening. No big deal. I’ve backpacked for long periods of time without a change of ... read more

August 31, 2006 On CR time! 12:10pm Yup! I am now in Costa Rica! A hell of a delay at George Bush International Airport, Houston, but finally got off the ground. All total. 40 minutes on the tarmac! So the pilot punched it and we were only delayed 8 minutes into Liberia. And as things go, my ride was NOT here waiting for me, so all the rental car reps tried to rent me a vehicle, then the hefe for the taxis spoke up and said he get me a taxi for a mere $50 yup, welcome to CR! The rep at the hotel, said he would have charged $30...go figure. Got a picture of me in front of the Aeroporto Liberia, thanks to that Hefe(boss)...seems I looked funny trying to take my own. I got ... read more

It was my boyfriend's dream as a kid to swim with Dolphins. So to make his dream come true I've been doing research and found this site www.dolphin-academy.com. It is located at Sea Aquarium Curacao (Southern Caribbean), which was great! There are different programs, depending on your age, budget and what you prefer. Pregnant women can only participate in the Dolphin Encounter Program. Before all the activities, you will receive instructions from the trainers. Customers must fill in an assumption of risk waiver before the activity of: Dolphin Swim and Dolphin Snorkel. You must get there before hand to pay for your activity and they will hand you the color coded wrist band for your activity and different color coded wrist band for the spectators. You must bring along bathing suit, towel and suntan lotion. ... read more

Thursday, day 4 of the school year. I just have one short story from today. Today, during science, I required my students to get into groups of two or three and come up with their own imaginary living organism and describe how it utilized the 6 life processes, write it down and draw a picture. My favorite was the half-man, half-martian. It gets energy by eating human skin cells and grass (I don't know), uses its energy by running, flying, and expanding, gets rid of waste by vomiting, and my favorite, it reproduces "alone or by 'having relations'". I wish we all had that option :). Oh, one more quick story. In reading we are learning about sequence, so I read them "The Lorax" by Dr. Suess. The loved the story and were great at sequencing. ... read more

We went to Curacao between 30Aug06 and 05Sep06 straight after the amazing trip to Aruba. Curacao looks similar to Amsterdam with all the colorful buildings! There is a floating market at Willemstad they sale fishes, fruit and vegetables as well! There are 2 must-visit beaches called: 1. Porto Marie - there is a small entrance fee, USD3 per person including 1 soft drink from the bar. But on the weekend is USD6 per person this also include 1 soft drink. This beautiful beach is perfect for snorkeling, swimming and diving. We actually bought our own snorkeling gear so we didn’t have to rent anything. On the first day, we snorkeled between 11am and 3pm from the far right hand-side of the beach to the far left hand-side of the beach. There are much less fishes ... read more
