Mike’s been spending a lot of time with Jorge, our mechanic, working on the truck to get her ready for our adventure. The other day, Jorge’s friend Carlos stopped over and invited everyone to have lunch at his father’s house up the mountain. When he said “up” the mountain, that’s seriously what he meant. Carlos’ father, José Luis, works for the government-run telephone service. The company owns a piece of land on the very top of a mountain called Cerro Chompipe, where it has a telephone tower. José Luis’ job is basically to maintain the tower and ensure the technicians are doing their jobs. The company therefore allows him and his wife, Mirela, to live in a house right next to the tower on the top of the mountain. What an amazing view! They overlook the ... read more

Aruba - Hudishibana - California Lighthouse  Central America Caribbean » Aruba By roseycheeksAugust 24th 2006Yvonne Choi This Hudishibana - California Lighthouse is isolated at the northwest tip of the Aruba Island. This lighthouse has become one of the Aruba’s most scenic trademarks. It offers the perfect view of the western coastline if sandy beaches. There are rocky coral shorelines and sand dunes near-by, so please be careful if you are driving! Because we saw a jeep drove through the sand dunes and got stuck in the sand! There is a restaurant just right next to the lighthouse, they offer refreshments during the days and they do fine dining during the nights. There were... read more

Aruba - Eagle Beach Central America Caribbean » Aruba By roseycheeksAugust 24th 2006Yvonne ChoiDuring Aug06, we stayed at the MVC Eagle Beach hotel which is directly opposite the beautiful Eagle Beach. It’s got long white sand stretches along the west-side of the island! It is very quiet; it really feels like a private beach. The Eagle Beach is just across the road from where we stayed. There are some parking spaces for you to park your car if you drove from another part of the island! There are some special looking trees called the Divi Divi Tree. There are also a lot of different sizes of iguanas around as well!! ... read more

Well alot has happened in the past 20 days or so since my last entry. The week after my birthday was Graham´s birthday and we celebrated it very well, practicing our 12 oz. curls. The last couple weeks we put an end to the high time of students and I finally ended my stressful 10 work day. Things are much more tranquil now and I really enjoy getting off work at 5 and being able to work around with the sun still out and about. It really is beautiful here! Last week I said bye to Graham as he made his way to Monterico, a beach town, to work with sea turtles. From August 14 to August 20 there was a big festival type thing (something of the sort happens every year, sponsored by the government) ... read more

What a day. Yesterday we were informed by word of mouth from other teachers (there is no such thing as memos here), that we would be having an 8 hour inservice today at the school. We arrived at 8 in the library, but word of mouth had not informed us that the eight hour inservice training would be in Spanish without translators. For the first two hours before the break, all the teachers who did not speak spanish were forced to just sit there. Needless to say at the break there was a revolt and they did not return for the rest of the trainings. I however could not convince the principal that I did not speak Spanish and was forced to sit through 6 more hours of boring lectures about values and virtues. It might ... read more

It’s strange to be the boss. In the states, I have always been an underling, never holding any real power, and never in charge of people’s livelihoods. Being a Gringo, we are looked at as being really wealthy, regardless of our household income. The truth is, that when you consider that most people here make about $2/hour, most Gringos are wealthy. Yesterday this really hit home. We have two painters working on the house, and our cleaning lady was here working. Then our gardener showed up, and we had 4 employees working here asking for direction and approval. The gardener started working when we bought the house, and originally was here 4 hours a week. This then changed to 8 and recently to 16 hours a week. Yesterday he came to me and explained that his ... read more

So this morning we were told there was a meeting (professional development) all day. We arrived, only to find out that the entire thing was in Spanish. I had to sit through an hour and a half of some man speaking spanish and I had NO clue what he was saying. Ok... that's a lie. I understood the words 'but', and 'drunk'. Lovely I know. I was pissed. At the coffee break, a bunch of us went up to Cesar and told him we weren't doing that the rest of the day. He was fine with that. I finished my room. I'll post all my before and after pics for ya. I also met one of my students today! her name is Angela Julissa (I have two Angelas in my class), pronounced "On-hey-la". She was SO ... read more

And we didn’t know where we should go. But I’ve always fancied going to the Caribbean. Then my Manager recommended Aruba to us. So I started planning and doing all the research last year May06 for the trip! And we decided to go for about 1 week during end of August. Flight time is about 1.20hrs from London to Amsterdam and 9hrs from Amsterdam to Aruba. First of all, I searc... read more

So Chris and I finished our planning today. All of our annual plans are in, as well as our first 2 weeks of daily plans. TLK friends, this was nothing compared to block plans so don't feel too sorry for me... lol. I'm mostly done the decorations in my classroom as well. I think I'll bring my camera tomorrow so that you can finally all see what my classroom looks like... before and after. Talked with Kari today. Her and Jeff are going to get certified for scuba diving that long weekend in September when we get a 5 day weekend. This was a thought they had before. I thought about it, and I'm totally in. It's about $220 USD for the 3-4 days of training and certification in English. Apparently the Bay Islands in Honduras ... read more

Alright...I was all over it tonight. I actually got into the game. I tried to Settle Catan, but it was to no avail. I'll have to get some experience in. I just settled places that looked pretty. Apparently not the best strategy. Fun none the less. So, we've decided against the goat named Shakira. We feel like it would be too much work. I think that I'm going to get a hermit crab for my class. Yay for teaching responsibilty. I'm going to let my class name it as well. Hopefully it goes better than last year, when the Head Start class tried to name our pet fish, "food". We do however, have a semi-pet at the house. Although senor frog visits from time to time, we have discovered a permanent resident. He is a gecko ... read more
