No we weren't going back to the future, but Livingston does not have any roads connecting it with the rest of the country so we made our way by boat to the town of Rio Dulce. We travelled up the river of the same name which you enter through a steep jungle covered ravine spotted with tiny little Mayan villages where women were doing there washing on the riverbank and men in dori canoes tried to dodge the speedboats whilst doing their fishing. The river has a number of places to stop on route to the town. Our first stop was a Mayan Artisan Village which had beautiful paper mache bowls made from local natural materials like pulped banana leafs and corn husks. We could not afford to send anything else home so we restrained from ... read more

Flores is a very pretty little town on an island in the middle of a lake. It is connected to the mainland town of St. Elena by a bridge and you can easily walk between the two. Flores is also quite expensive being the main town base for tourists, such as ourselves, wanting to visit the famous mayan ruins at Tikal, an hour away in the jungle. As always hotel staff and tour shops are touting for your business as soon as you step foot in the town and after weighing up the costs we decided it was worth paying the extra to visit Tikal with a tour guide to see the sunrise which also meant we could get the night bus out the next day. After securing our tour tickets we had a wander around ... read more

School was basically much of the same today. Although after school, at about 2pm in the hot Honduran sun, I got to play basketball with some other teachers and the principal. It was a ton of fun. However, everytime the principal would knock me over or I would fall down on my own because I'm clumsy, he would stop the game and make sure I was okay. I told him it was fine, keep playing, but I don't think he really got it. If nothing else it was good exercise. After we were done playing, Sarah, Chris, and I took our sweaty selves to the school supply store so I could find bulletin board borders. The closest things that they had were wallpaper boarders for babies' rooms. I opted to make my own boarders from paper. ... read more

PSA Photos to be posted at a later date. We don't have good USB connections currently. Intro to Puerto Limon Under Construction. Our Experience It rained on the bus ride from Puerto Viejo to Puerto Limon. I tried to read, but I started to get sick because the bus had to swerve to avoid potholes every 50 feet. So, I gave up reading and just enjoyed the ride. When we arrived in Puerto Limon it was still raining. We got out of the bus, grabbed our luggage from the luggage compartment, and ran for a nearby awning. Joe's Note: Actually the bus had to swerve about every 5 inches. This was not the best road in the world. I'm impressed no one got sick. Under the awning we consulted our guidebook, but were eventually approached by ... read more

After a long morning at Wekso we headed back to Bocas - Tio Tom was full so we stayed in a very cute house in Bocas town called Hotel del Parque, right on the town park. We got a hot shower - which was SO very necessary after Wekso! We both smelled absolutely horrible, and didn't have a stitch of clothing that didn't smell terrible. We washed all our clothes and hung them up, and even after that our clothes - and us - still smelled. I guess that's what a couple of days in the rainforest with no shower can do to you! But it still felt great to feel somewhat clean. We went back for ceviche at the place on the water in town (right next to Hotel Bocas), and then ate at a ... read more

thank you all for your well wishes and prayers. they have helped! after two full nights of sleep and minimum itching, i am ready to start travelling again. tomorrow i leave for el salvador where i will spend a day or two shopping...i need to get new sneakers and a bunch of other practical things that were stolen with my backpack. el salvador is great for shopping...they have good malls and their currency is the US dollar. after that, i am onto nicaragua, costa rica and finally panama. less than a month left!! i´m excited to start travelling again but also a bit apprehensive. i know once i am started i will feel better but for now i am feeling some dread. i have been settled here for a bit and have gotten used to a ... read more

It was bound to happen. To be honest I am surprized it didn't happen sooner. At a soccer game between Honduras and Costa Rica in Comayagua (a rare occasion) I was first asked if I was Eruopean or Gringa... when I learned that, here, Gringa refers only to those from the US, not just any white person. Iwas then asked the inevitable, "Do you like Bush?" Herein lies the reason why Canadians appear so much more patriotic then us gringos... were we to walk around with giant American flags on our packs who knows the dangers we might be putting ourselves in. Very few people like us, and it's getting fewer and fewer everyday. So I guess I'll be a proud Canadian for a while, till some change comes about. ... read more

So like I said in the last blog, Josh and I wanted to go to the rainforest in Panama (especially since we didn't have time to do so in Ecuador). We had read about a place called Wekso, which is an ecolodge on the mainland deep in the rainforest and within hiking distance of the Parque Nacional La Amistad - one of the few places on earth that is still considered somewhat unexplored. We made arrangements with them in advance and headed out early in the morning to take a boat from Bocas to Finca Sesenta (Farm #60), a port near the banana company town of Chinguanola. There a very friendly Wekso volunteer picked us up in an air-conditioned S.U.V. (which was a little bit of a shock after living in the open-air with no cars ... read more

My computer has been revived from where computers go when they die in Comayagua - the owner of the local Chinese food restaurant. Today after we arrived home from school, we heard a knocking on our door. Nadia went to answer it and was very confused as to who the chinese man was standing in the doorway. As Sarah and I came to look, we realized Mauricio (school administrator) was also there. AND they brought me a fixed computer. I was so excited that I wanted to hug the guy but I don't think he was the hugging type. The other excitement for the day was the kamakazi beetle. We were watching School of Rock in Kari, Jeff, and Chris' house next door and a huge beetle flew in, would hoover and then dive into people's ... read more
