Today as I was walking around town, I was passed by a bus with "Minneapolis Metro School District" written accross the side of it. I felt a little twang of homesickness. After taking a freezing cold shower again today, I was ready for some hugs from home and some head start :) But the day was redeemed when I got a honduran newpaper and was able to read the world news. Later in the day Leah (new teacher from utah) arrived and we all made spaghetti dinner. We decided to return to Villa Real (where we discovered Port Royal) after dinner. The coolest thing about the whole night was that we met people from the Costan Rican soccer team and I even danced with one. Although, I have to say that I had more fun dancing ... read more

Well, time and countries are whizzing by now, very fast.... We arrived in Antigua by chicken bus/rollercoaster, going at the speed of sound! Only just managing to keep my arms in their sockets after whizzing around corners soooo fast. Gladly arriving in one piece to the beautiful Antigua, with its colonial buildings and very friendly people. We stayed in the 3rd place we went to and the only place that wasnt full, Im not sure if the HOTEL sign should be replaced with PRISON! Because thats what it felt like.. we even had bars at the window....but didnt spend much time inside.. we were out and about enjoying the sights, and the markets!! Just biding our time till we left to chichitcastenango on a chicken bus ... and the famous Sunday market... We needed rest before ... read more

It was our last day of our holiday and I sure didn't want to hang out in San Jose all day. I got up while Trish was still in bed and booked us into a half-day tour leaving that morning. It was the most touristy tour that we have been on - the guide spoke reasonably good english and we had to stick to a tight schedule. The main attraction was driving to the summit of Volcon Irazu, Costa Ricas highest volcano. There was a paved road at the top and we did a short walk to see the bright green crater lake. The other stop was La Basilica do Nuestra Senor do los Angeles in Cartago, apparently the most important church in the country. It was definitely the most impressive church that we had seen ... read more

Went to bed last night after midnight, so it was officially “me cumpleaneous”. I opened my birthday cards from my parents… very sweet… made me cry a little. Went to bed. Woke up this morning to my alarm clock giving that weird sound it makes when the power goes out. Turns out something happened this morning with our power. We think it might be the fact that Jill and Jenna showered at the same time and the electricity that heats the water was too much. My alarm clock powered back on so I reset it and went back to bed. When I woke up, Jenna and Jill had gone out. There was a note saying that they had gone to the school to let them know that some of our power was out (I only found ... read more

Intro to Las Tablas Under Construction. Our Experience We had a pretty quiet trip to Las Tablas. The bus was air conditioned, and it didn't stop much until we neared Las Tablas. It did, however, take quite a while, and by the time we got to town it was very much nighttime. This wouldn't be all that bad, but this town is pretty small and our book only listed one hotel. Fortunately, an English-speaking woman (she sounded and looked American) who lives in Las Tablas told us about a good clean hotel and then even grabbed a cab for us. We got to the hotel just fine, and it turned out to be fairly reasonably priced and probably one of the best rooms we've stayed in. We thoroughly enjoyed our night in A/C-hot water bliss. The ... read more

FYI, the travelling and exploring part of my vacation begins on Friday when I head down to Peru; this week was definitely the R&R part of the trip. My dad and I decided to go for a little beach vacation and ended up in the Nicoya Peninsula at a hotel called the Premier Fiesta, in Gulf Papagayo near Tamarindo. It took us five hours to get there, but it was worth the journey. Premier Fiesta is about as cheesy a resort hotel as you can get, but it was brilliant nonetheless. An all inclusive package means all the food and drink (including alcohol) that you can tolerate. And while most people know I can't tolerate much alcohol, it certainly helps to push the boundaries when it's free. To be honest, my dad and I were a ... read more

Although we would have loved to stay on longer at the lovely Laguna de Apoyo, we had to get back to San Jose for our flight on saturday. In retrospect, it would have been much better to have an open-jaw ticket, flying into San Jose and leaving from Managua or something like that. We headed back to Granada, where we caught the Ticabus to San Jose. Ticabus is the top end of the buses in Central America - comfy seats, air-con, crappy Chuck Norris movies playing, etc. Since it was our last big bus ride we thought we would try travelling in style. Depsite being the most comfortable way to travel, it was only $12.50 for the 9 hour trip. They even collect up the passports and take care of getting them stamped on the way ... read more

Hey! Eerste berichtje vanuit Honduras!

I was very excited when I was told that our showers were going to have hot water as that is somewhat of a luxury in Central America. Sarah however informed me that it would be wise not to touch the shower head as the water is heated by electricity. Some how it seems to me that that was not very well thought out. Not to worry however, Jill and I took a shower at the same time and blew the electricity. Cold showers...brrrr. Jill and I promptly went to the school to let them know what had happened and they assured us someone would be there to fix it by the afternoon (as I am backtracking now, because I finally have my computer fixed, I can tell you that the electricity was fixed two days later). ... read more

So, I arrived at O'hare airport at 3:00 am, a little hung over and a lot tired. The American desk wasn't even opening till 4:30 am, wish I might have known that. While waiting I discoved from several TSA personnel that something had happened in London, "I wouldn't plan on getting very far today..." They said, not very encouraging. By the time waiting in line became necessary I was aware of bombs, and 20 arrests in London. I was one of the lucky few to learn that "liquids, creams or gels" would not be permitted and was able to put them in my checked luggage. I watched several people throw out perfume, hair products and even mayonnaise. My flight was very late leaving Chicago and I literally had to run to make my connecting flight in ... read more
