So I woke up at 8, had a shower and such and was all ready for 8:30, as that was when we were told we'd be picked up. We were all ready and waiting... and waiting... we finally called the school to ask when Mauricio was coming. He said he was help up with some things but would be by shortly. We later realised, he wasn't the 2 hours late that we thought. The clocks here changed on the weekend but no one told us. We knew that was coming up but the director thought it might be in September... Anyways, I am now 2 hours behind most of you (Yes J'Arns, this is a special shout out to you). Anyways, Mauricio picked us up and we went to the school so that Jenna could have ... read more

Ofanan´s original trip to MonteCristo, El Salvador - March '08 Isolated and pristine (...) thick cloud forest canopy, exotic orchids and abudant wildlife (...) views and photo opportunities are outstanding Get advance permission from the National Parks and Wildlife Service in San Salvador (...) There is no place to stay here (...) bring all your own equipment, food and water (...) none of the trails is well marked (...) hiking trails begin from Los Planes (1900m), a grassy clearing (...) Unforunately, getting to Los Planes is a challenge, and not the cheap one. If you have a 4WD (...) (Description of National Park Monte Cristo, El Salvador at Lonely Planet). The easiest part was getting to Los Planes. 2h of unpaved uphill, from which only the last half hour was really steep. The obstacles Obtaining an ... read more

This morning I went to the school for a tour and to meet the principal. Mauricio, one of the administrators was supposed to pick up Sarah, Jill, and I between 8:30-9am to bring us to the school. At 11am I called the school, he assured us that he would be there in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later he arrived at the house. Somehow I feel like I'll fit in here just wonderfully. The school is huge (by Honduran stardards). It has two floors with an open air middle and apparently used to be a shopping mall. I will try to post pictures of the school soon. They don't have any room assignments or class lists but hopefully that will be done before school starts in less than three weeks. After my tour, Melissa, one of the ... read more

Bienvenido a Panama Along the narrow isthmus bridging the Americas, the wildlife and terrain of two continents melt to form the striking contrasts of Panama. Ocean, forest, mountain and jungle set the stage for countless adventures. You can go whale-watching along the craggy Pacific coast, snorkel around tiny islands in the Caribbean or surf good breaks off either coast. If you have had enough of the heat, escape to the highlands and go rafting down class-five rapids, hike through cloud forests or bathe in crisp mountain streams. Panama's jungles are some of the least explored areas in the world. You can visit indigenous villages, marvel at some of the country's 940 bird species or wake at sunrise to the view of both oceans at your feet. Panama's diversity doesn't end in the countryside. With immigrants from ... read more

We went for a walk down the road in the morning - there wasn´t a lot too see as this is a pretty quiet area. The rest of the day was spent reading, relaxing, swimming and kayaking in the lake. After dinner, we headed down for a swim under the full moon. Night-time at the lake we generally quiet... until a mango falls out of the tree and hits the roof, which sounds like a bomb going off. This happens numerous times throughout the night.... read more

Sorry we've been out of touch for awhile. It may have been remote but it got even remoter! Back in (relative) civilisation in Belize City and on the homeward stretch. Boys beginning to pine for home, Charlie and Claudia - forgot we'd be passing you at Heathrow- maybe we'll manage to catch a glimpse of each other! From San Ignacio - colourful small town in the jungle where we managed to commandeer a room with a huge terrace and several hammocks overlooking the corrugated roofs and excellent vantage point for watching the stormclouds gather - we headed for more adventure on the river. This time it was rather less laid back as the lodge catered for Americans looking for 'real' jungle adventure which somehow immediately rendered it less real. It was a jungle bootcamp where everyone ... read more

Last Saturday rolled around like any other day here in Barva. Mike and I made our way over to the Delgado’s to have some lunch at about noon and chat up the family a bit. Little did we know that Gerardo had other plans for us. By the time we got to the house, Agnes (one of the daughters) had told us lunch would be ready in about an hour. Gerardo seized this opportunity to convince us to go to the bar with him for a beer while we waited. I was hesitant at first, knowing full well that he meant 3 or 4 beers and certainly not 1. However he looked so genuinely excited to take us out, that I couldn’t say no. It didn’t hit me that we’d be drinking at 12 in the ... read more

As I was flying into Panama City I was thinking how cool it would be to be able to stay a little while. As it turns out, my flight was an hour and a half late and I was too late to make my connection. So, I get to spend the night in a hotel in Panama, near the airport, so be careful what you wish for. So far I haven´t done anything and I´m really sorry that I haven´t updated since the middle of the end of europe. Trust that it was cool and that I´ll be safe and have a good time. I really hope I get to see the Panama Canal, that would be super cool. Anyhow, I have to figure out how I´m going to tell George and Sheree that I´m not ... read more

My Mom's been asking me for pictures of the house. Many of them are similar to the ones that Chris already sent me, but I guess this will give you more of an idea as to where I'm living. Combine these with the ones from before and you're set! Enjoy!... read more

What an exciting day for us. Craig, our 20 yr old son arrived from Florida today for his first visit to Costa Rica. This will be a short blog to let everyone know he arrived safely and for family who haven't seen him in a while to get a look at him. :) Steph... does this guy look familiar? We'll start our two week adventure today, Wednesday, by heading up to Arenal for two nights. We don't know exactly where else we'll end up while he's in town but I'm sure it will be a grand adventure for him as well as for us. Every day is an adventure for us in Costa Rica. We're thrilled to be able to share it with our family. Time to get packing! Pura Vida! Jen, Bill, Callista, Bear and ... read more
