Our diving course is not the sort of thing that many people fail, but it's nice to gain a new qualification all the same. We completed our course with the best dive of the lot, a 'wreck dive'. The ship we went to have a look around was a container ship called Halliburton, which has been lying 30m below the surface since it sank in 1998. It's hard to describe what it's like when this huge rusty wreck comes into view. We had a good look around the outside and then went into the main cargo hold. Probably the best bit was swimming into the wheelhouse - it's weird thinking that the ship's captain would obviously have stood here when it was afloat. There was also the slightly incongruous sight of a mountain bike chained to ... read more

Its never good to wake up with a fever and chills, but even worse to wake up here with a fever and chills. I didn't feel so hot this morning when I woke so I wrote about 6 pages of directions for the sub and asked Sarah to let Mr. Cesar (our principal) know I was sick. I soon thereafter curled up on the couch underneath my down comforter and fell back asleep. When I woke up, there was three men standing over me. Although I was startled, I realized it was the school maintenence man and two of the workers who had come to fix our water tanks. After a two minute conversation and Saoul (little maintenance man) feeling my forehead, he called the school from our phone to let them know, apparently, that I ... read more

September 21, 2006—St. Kitts, West Indies (So...apparently I added the photos to the wrong blog entry...and I can't get them moved to this one. Since they took me about 2 hours to upload, I am just going to leave them there. So if you want to see the new photos that should go with this text, just look at the last entry in full text and scroll all the way to the bottom.) Well, we’ve been here in St. Kitts for about a month now, and are finally getting to update the website. It’s hard to fill in the past month, especially when we are largely limited to rather flowery statements (since our website is not password protected and therefore could potentially be viewed by people who could take offense to comments, even if not intended ... read more

Hey everyone, I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to write on this thing but I've not had much internet access and it's been a fairly eventful week. Hope you're all doing well at home. I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who donated money or sponsored me or helped in any way to get me out here! Well, I arrived in Costa Rica last Friday (8th), which actually feels like a lifetime ago. When we arrived it was hunid and raining, so not the welcome we were hoping for! Won't come as a surpirse to some of you that i was sick when we landed anf again after the car journey to the eco lodge in Vara Blanca, near the other girls' project. The lodge was beautiful, with a cosy ... read more

Day Two - Wednesday September 20th We'd staked out the Metro Centro as our base of operations while not in our guest house. We trekked down there around noon to grab a bite to eat. We found a breakfast place called Florencia (or something along those lines) and ate crepes packed and covered with strawberries and sauce. Oh god, it was so good! The service there was unmatched. Nowhere have I gone in the world where the service is as polite and friendly as in El Salvador. The people nearly burst at the seams with cheer when they greet you! We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the mall, shopping, and pretty much looking around at all the neat stuff. We were getting a lot of stares, although after a while I got used to ... read more

...starting at San Juan Gate! Built around 1635, just north of La Fortaleza, several blocks downhill from the cathedral, was the main point of entry into San Juan if you arrived by ship in the 17th and 18th centuries. The gate is the only one remaining of the several that once pierced the fortifications of the old walled city. For centuries it was closed at sundown to cut off access to the historic old town. The city walls around San Juan were built in 1630 to protect the town against both European invaders and Caribbean pirates. The city walls that remain today were once part of one of the most impregnable fortresses in the New World and even today are an engineering marvel. Their thickness averages 20 feet (6m) at the base and 12 feet (3.6m) ... read more

Today we had the misfortune to be on the morning slot, which meant being at the dock at 7am. Yes it really can be quite tough. First up was a 'Deep Dive' down to 30m (100ft). Our instructor made us do a few somersaults to enhance the effects of nitrogen narcosis, which is more or less identical to being drunk. It seemed to work, with Ed getting his mental arithmetic messed up (we were given some elementary timed tasks on the surface and at 30m below to demonstrate the loss of clarity of thought). Before our second dive we had to wait 80 minutes - to allow nitrogen to escape from our blood - so the boat took us to one of the Cays (mini-islands) for a burger. It was turning into a good morning. ... read more

I was recently asked why I don't have a photo gallery here, considering how much I enjoy photography- particularly in Costa Rica. So, I figure it's overdue to put this together- I am organizing it as follows- it's not so easy to add pics, so I apologize fo this being a bit messy: 1st - Orchids- Since our Inn will be named "The Orchid Lodge"-- the website listed on the pics is not yet operational 2nd - Macro- These Macros are my favorite type of photography work 3rd - Wildlife- Anyone coming to visit Costa Rica to see the beaches is really missing the point of our wonderful country. The wildlife here is so amazing! 4th - LandscapesThere are so many beautiful places in Costa Rica, especially near our house on the mountains... 5th - Hotel ... read more

I decided I would head to the beach this weekend to get a little R&R because things are definitely getting busy again, starting in October for the “high season” in Costa Rica and I didn’t know when I would be able to get away again. The bookings just seem to rolling in now for the U.S. winter (which I’m thrilled about). So, I headed to my favorite beach area Quepos/Manuel Antonio. All was going well at first: the weather was beautiful when I arrived on Friday and my favorite hotel, “Hotel Manuel Antonio” (right on the beach near the national park), had rooms—and they always give me a good rate. Friday was a good day. Saturday was a beautiful day as well but not a good day for me and my $!#$@*^@$*!$*%^%# car! I decided I ... read more
