Since there is absolutely nothing to do within several miles of our hostal - with the notable exception of Miraflores Lock, which we visited yesterday, we caught a bus downtown. Unfortunately downtown Panama City doesn't have an awful lot to offer and to make matters worse it is spread along about 10 miles of ocean. We decided to restrict ourself to one small bit a 3 mile long causeway that stretches out into the Pacific. A hundred years ago there was a clump of 4 small islands of shore, but when they built the canal they put a lot of the excavated earth and rocks to good use by constructing this causeway. This wasn't with one eye on the needs of 21st century tourists but rather was just because they needed a 3 mile long ... read more

Manuel Antonio was really an amazing park. I would definitely recommend heading there in the rainy season, considering it felt like we had the park all to ourselves with the exception of only a few other hikers. We have heard that the place gets a bit overrun in the dry season with tour buses lining up on the street outside. Our seven dollar entry fee was well spent as we saw an abundance of wildlife, interesting flora and beautiful beaches. The hiking was cool due to the trails being shaded by the tree canopy. However, I would also recommend hiking in the early morning - the afternoons can get quite hot here. Bring water as well, which can be purchased from folks on the street outside the entrance. No maps are sold nor are they needed ... read more

Day Ten - Thursday September 28th I woke up with a headache and feeling a little out of it. The good part? I USUALLY feel out of it, and a headache is something I can deal with. I was so happy. M offered me some headache pills and I declined. If I could maintain that level of sickness, then I'd be laughing all the way home! Marta's uncle was picking us up around 12 that day since we still had stuff to do back in San Salvador and our flight was leaving on Friday. After a lovely breakfast, we went shopping through Santa Ana again. At first we thought we were just going for ice cream, but before that we were taken to a coin museum. I'm very sorry I didn't bring my camera along for ... read more

This morning we got a ride down to Magen's Bay, which is about 3 minutes from my sister's apartment. We spent the morning there while our hosts worked at local schools for the morning. Magen's Bay was typically packed with cruise ship tourists on Thursdays when I lived here, but this being the lowest month of low season, there were no cruise ships in town and maybe 10 locals swimming on this mile long beach. Completely empty beaches are a trend you'll notice the next few blog entries. September is low season because it's hot and muggy, and there's the possibility of hurricanes. Also, because it's low season about half the restaurants and hotels are closed. But it's the best time to visit. Leaving Magen's, we stopped by St. Thomas Dairies for a milkshake. Bananaquit and ... read more

So I have finally made it (to San Jose that is). The flights took almost nine hours to get here, but I made it safely. While on the flight form Dallas to San Jose I saw the most beautiful sunset out of the plane window. The bottom of the horizon was completely orange with the sunsetting casting a black shadow on the clouds. Above the orange sun, the sky was bright blue with a tiny sliver of a moon and one small bright star directly above it. It was gorgeous and it made me very excited to be heading to Costa Rica. You just don´t see things like that in the US, which is really what this whole trip was all about. When I got into San Jose it was raining, no big surprise, but it ... read more

We’ve been looking forward to using this famous palindrome for ages, so hopefully everyone will be sufficiently impressed. The day began on the bus and, still half-asleep, we negotiated past the taxi drivers all pretending to be our best friends so they can take us to their cousin’s dump of a hotel. So we were on our way to our chosen hostel, with a taxi driver who was not a good liar. When asked if he was sure he knew where he was going, he said “Yes” when it was totally obvious that he should have said “No”. Eventually we found it (better to be lucky than good, as they say), although we were surprised to find that the hostel was an ex-2 bedroom apartment converted into a 12 person backpackers’ home. And literally miles from ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Belize September 28th 2006

We arrived in Belize on 20th September after flying from Rio de Janeiro via Miami to Cancun. From there we jumped on a bus to Playa del Carmen where we spent a few lazy days by the beach. We were in Belize just in time for the the 25th Independence Day celebrations. Things were in full swing - music blaring from the speakers on the bus that we took to cross the border from Mexico and all the way into Belize City and when we arrived there was a real party atmosphere - music from an indeterminable amount of stereos and fireworks exploding overhead. Independence Day (21st September) in Belize comes in the wake of the partying for St George's Caye Day, on 10 September - and the parties just keep going. We spent our first ... read more

Its great to be up in the cooler air! The rain comes and goes along with the clouds, or FOG. To watch the clouds roll in at night makes the surrounding lights disappear, it becomes dead quiet, and VERY brisk! I am waiting for a clear night to take a picture of the 'highway to the sky'.....Yellow street lights off past San Ramon, that seem to lead straight up into the sky.... coming soon, I hope. Here is the new 4x4, stick shift, and all around a better vehicle. NOW I can take day trips ANYwhere. Meeting new folks everyday here, seeing houses for sale, houses being built, learning the ups and downs of all involved. Still just a 'sponge' for information. Keep it comin'! The trees of Zarcero are conifers planted all over and grow ... read more

Hi everyone, Well it has been tough trying to find an internet that works in this beautiful part of the world and as for loading photos onto CDs I am not sure that I will get to do that till I get to Mexico City in just over a week. I can´t use my hotmail at the moment as it keeps crashing the system so if you need to contact me please use my bigpond address simone.guild@bigpond.com My first day I spent wandering around Havana and felt a little like a fish out of water because of my under developed spanish language skills. I needed to buy a bag to leave some stuff behind at the hotel cos you all know how I can shop well my backpack is currently 20kg and rising. I went to ... read more

Well we've known this for a while, but we needed to wait out the first trimester to make the announcement. Rachel is expecting and is due in April. She just made it to her twelfth weeks, and is beginning to show, so there's no hiding it anymore! More to come so stay tuned!
