Central America Caribbean » Guatemala September 24th 2006

This one is a doozie, folks. Brace yourselves. We’re still in Guatemala, but we’ve covered a lot of ground since we last blogged. And being that we’re not so good at editing things out, that means that there are lots of stories and photos for your enjoyment, perhaps even more than you would like. Bear with us. We last left off in Livingston our port of entry into Guatemala. And it was a really good place to transition from Belize. In Livingston, the folks by and large speak Spanish, but English is pretty regularly used, and we still got to listen in on colorful conversations in Creole. The people in Livingston are more diverse than in other parts of Guatemala and the Garifuna culture (black Caribbean) is still prevalent. This was great for us as we ... read more

Friday is our errand day. It's the day we prefer go to the feria, the fruit and veggie market although we can go Saturday mornings too. We usually run errands, have lunch in town then hit the feria on the way home. Bill also needed to fill up on propane since we'd been to Naranjo, Alajuela and San Jose the past week. Bill hadn't realized it was 12:00 when we left the house. As suspected UGASA (propane gas station) wasn't opened during lunch. Lesson learned. You never know who is opened from 12 to 1pm. It's trial and error. We decided to eat lunch at a favorite Mexican soda. Don't get excited, we still haven't found good Mexican food. Los Napoles is owned by a nice Mexican man who married a Tica and is making a ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cayman Islands September 23rd 2006

Nothing like the boss suggesting we need new Underwater footage to promote the company. “OK, boss I’ll take one for the team. Where do I have to go? Oh, the Cayman Islands? Well, I guess so. An entire week you say? Well that really screws up my schedule, but if you insist.” So I’m off to Grand Cayman, a week of diving and with a new HD camcorder no less. I spent my Friday and Saturday taking in the sites of Grand Cayman: the Turtle Farm, the local pub, and of course, Hell. Yes, you heard me right, Hell exists and its right here on planet earth, apparently all those religious folk were right, they were just a little geographically challenged in regards to its location. Hell is actually an area of weathered limestone rock that ... read more

Day Five - Saturday September 23rd I woke up every two hours on the hour to puke. I won't get detailed about it because I'm sure nobody likes me THAT much (except for MARTA who got to hear it all) to want to know the details of my illness. Suffice it to say that those over-cooked and crispy eggs from that morning made a reappearance and I wasn't feeling well on Saturday morning to go out. I stayed in bed while Marta went out to meet Gaby. I think I drifted in and out of consciousness, decidedly uncomfortable but not sure what part of my body was aching and preventing me from having a restful sleep. The bed was suddenly too hard and the pillow not fluffy enough. My granny!gown wasn't enough to keep me cool. ... read more

This would have been our earliest wake up yet - the alarm was set for 3.15am. However we slept through this after a bad night’s sleep (and an ineffective but still 100 decibel fan) and awoke to find it was 4.23am. Our bus was leaving at 5. We made the decision to try and catch it, as the next bus was not for another 24 hours. 13 minutes later we had got dressed, cleaned teeth, checked out, got a taxi to the bus terminal and were in the queue to buy two tickets (turned out to be almost the last two tickets as the bus was pretty much full). Impressive stuff. We were heading for Managua, Nicaragua. It was a very uneventful journey with even the border crossing organized by the bus company, TICABUS, so all ... read more

First thing first, I have to say that TravelBlog kicks butt. Seriously, this site is awesome. It inspires me to write somthing to share for all travelgoers out there. With that said, the events occured last Septemeber 19-20. I was planning to write this experience of mine on a notebook, sound chessy? Not really, but somehow I got the time and a peace of mind from work and I have the office by myself. Please note that I don't have a digicam, though I have a disposable camera and will scan it some other day. Day 1 Sleeping under a blanket that covers from the bitter coldness of aircondition (Yes, somehow they haven't adjusted the temperature). First thing I heard is cluttering and chatting of my roomates in early morning, that forced me to wake up ... read more

Buenos Tardes! Greetings from Lago Atitlan. We landed in Guatemala city two days ago and immediately jumped into vans to take us to San Marcos. The group was wiped out after an overnight flight. We slept most of the way. After a long nap squeezed in upon the winding roads leading to the highlands, we finally arrived. The words "Bienvenidos a lago" woke me out of a deep sleep and I looked outside to the spectacular sight of Lake Atitalan. As some may already know, my Grandmother has been diagnosed with lung cancer. I decided to go foward with the trip anyway with the understanding that I would fly home if things looked bad. I am always thinking of her and send my love to her and the rest of family. We boated across the lake ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Guanacaste » Tamarindo September 23rd 2006

Yes I'm almost ashamed to say we're in Tamarindo - without a doubt the most american like, touristy, big real estate business town in Costa Rica. But we do have to see all we can see Our trip here from Santa Teresa was interesting enough. Seriously, Ali and I (as I think I've said before) have been so lucky travelling around here. Always getting just the right bus, perfect timing, meeting great people who go out of their way to help us. And this trip was no different (thank goodness 'cos it took 11 hours). We arrived at our Coral Reef hostel at about 10pm and immediately bumped into the group of italian guys we shared our hostel with in Santa Teresa! We decided to stay 5 nights here, and are only being charged $4 per ... read more

Ah... San Pedro La Laguna resting on the shores of Lago de atitlan in the highlands of guatemala. ´´pan de banan, pan de coco, pan de chocolat...´´ these are the sounds of San Pedro. The women who carry these baskets of fresh bread on their heads are incredibly burly. It has been somewhat of an adventure getting here but at last we have made it to the land of the cheap. We began the trip about a week ago in guatemala city we arrived just in time for the country´s indapendance day celebration. The city was absoutly alive and a little intimidating, but with the help of a friend Senior Lopez and his son we were able to find some accomodations for the evening in the more run down part of town. Although, we quickly realized ... read more

After spending the past few weeks heading down the coast, enjoying small beach towns along the way, Mike and I have come to realize that what had appeared to be insect and spider bites is now a serious case of poison ivy. I can’t tell you how many people have said they didn’t even think Costa Rica had poison ivy. Let me assure everyone that this lovely little plant is alive and thriving here…grrrr… I have to say though that dealing with the pharmacies directly (as is custom here instead of going to the doctors) has been decent. I have been given the proper antihistamine and lotions but have basically been told that it will be a slow recovery and that nothing will really stop the constant itching. Both legs, from my knees front and ... read more
