Hi everyone, Still no ability to load photos here I am afraid hopefully when I get to veradero in a couple of days. I have a fantastic collection however until then you will just have to take my word for it. I am currently in Trinidad. I was supposed to leave yesterday however met a couple of great people and decided to stay a little longer. Laura is from Manchester in UK and Mary is from South Korea. We went to Casa de la Musica the night before last and had a great night. More Cuban music and salsa. There is a Casa de la Musica in every town I think however this one in Trinidad is outside. Was a beautiful night and the mojitos and beers were flowing. There was another Australian girl there who ... read more

ok, truth is i'm no longer under blue honduran skies, but under the grey ones of brum. my last few weeks in honduras were crazy, had no time to waste in the internet cafe. so here's a quick update of what i did. UTILA ... i was lucky enough to get a long weekend off school so i took the advantage to go to Utila, one of the Bay Islands off Honduras, accessable by a 1hr boat trip from La Ceiba on the coast. Last year i had been to Roatan (the bigger Bay Island) twice so i decided to check out her little sister. Utila is a paradise for backpackers who like diving and partying. I spent my weekend doing exactly that, up at 7.30, roll down the stairs of my dirt cheap but beautiful ... read more

hondurans celebrate national independence on September 15th. actually they kind of celebtrate it for the whole month but parades are on the 15th. our school was no exception. me and one of the other teachers Sean spent the week before making a dragon/mayan serpent head which was an ordeal, but we were proud of the the finished product and it made sure our school kicked the ass of the rival bilingual school. i miss honduras already. in some ways it was wierd going back... my kids where that little bit older (between cute fun kids and adolescent nightmares), my friends have new things in their lives to keep them busy (such as boyfriends), different teachers, new reggueton songs, new houses and shops had been built and a lot more people had cell phones. but essentially it ... read more

Sorry to say not much to report today. Apart from we visited probably the worst airport in the world. For an international airport catering for Americans (and there are a lot here due to the canal and the banking industry) we had high hopes. To start with it was just like any small airport with not a lot to do. Once through security we knew there would be restaurants and shops. However we were surprised to find several each of the following: Lacoste store, sunglass shop and perfume shop. And one very small restaurant - charging what it liked as it had no competition. It was like a market with each shop selling exactly the same as their neighbours. To cap it off there was not a single newsagent or any shop selling a book or ... read more

The biggest tourist attraction in Virgin Gorda is the Baths. It is difficult to describe this surreal place, so I will let the pictures speak for themselves. There are actually two beaches. We hiked from one to the other through caves and up and down ladders, then snorkeled back to the first. While snorkeling we saw a sea turtle and of course the requisite hundreds of tropical fish. Unfortunately, J's sister and her boyfriend had to return to St. Thomas for work on Monday morning so we had to say goodbye. Thanks again to you both for your hospitality, we wish we could have visited longer! We had a blast with you and look forward to seeing you back home.... read more

I'm thrilled about the subject-matter of this entry of what I call my "Island Lover's Guide to the Caribbean", because this is one of my all-time favorites--Antigua! In fact, I have so much awesome information that I want to share with you about this Caribbean hot spot, I'm probably going to break this down into a couple of entries! Even though most of my initial visits to the islands were during my days as a lawyer/lobbyist and considered "working trips", I quickly learned that each island has its own particular style. Now that I travel mainly for the purpose of experiencing what each island has to offer, I can tell you that the only way to get a real feel for the islands and their varied landscapes, exotic flora, bustling waterfront towns, and friendly laid-back ... read more

“Antigua--a different beach for every day of the year!” We just finished up with all of the Derby activities here in Louisville, Kentucky, and what an exciting week it was! With all of the air shows, fireworks celebrations, galas, parades, brunches, lunches, dinners and tastings, I am thrilled to sit still for a few moments and provide you with more awesome information on Antigua! Speaking of special events, April and May are very exciting times in Antigua as well! The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was held April 19-24th! Mark your calendar, because the 2008 Regatta will be held April 18th-23rd. What an event! The Regatta has maintained a steady growth since its 1988 birth with 7 boats. It now hosts between 50 and 60 yachts every year and enjoys a wonderful variety of competitors including ... read more

Montserrat, at 12 miles long and almost 7 miles wide, was once known as a 'haven of tranquility'. The island was most appropriately named "the Emerald isle of the Caribbean ". It was a slice of the old Caribbean with a smattering of beaches and hotels, and a lush, mountainous interior that invited exploration. The island's peaceful surroundings were shattered by the devastating eruption of the Soufriere (French for sulfur) Volcano, known by locals as Chance's Peak, in 1995. As ash, rocks, and lava rained down from the newly reactivated volcano, two-thirds of the population of 12,000, the entire southern portion of the island, was evacuated. In 1997, the increased volcanic activity destroyed the abandoned capital, Plymouth . At the present time, volcanologists constantly monitor the activity, and though they can predict the activity, they have ... read more

We both completed our scuba classes so we left the Bay Islands to head down to Nicaragua. We spent one night in Managua and then 3 nights in Granada. Unfortunatley, our volunteer project did not work out, the person that we were in contact with was back in Boston when we were there. He put us in contact with a local person that was also involved in the project but she did not speak english and our spanish is still pretty poor so it was impossible to communicate and we went out to the site twice and no one seemed to be working. From Granada we headed down to Tamirindo, Costa Rica for 2 nights and now we are staying with Mike's aunt Ana and uncle Javier back in Manuel Antonio. Its always nice to be ... read more

By the way, Shana Tova everyone. Although there are 2 synagogues in San Jose, we did not make it to services. Instead, we rang in the New Year by baking challah, eating apples with honey and having friends over for dinner. It was very nice and casual but we did miss everyone up north with whom we usually celebrate. Back to our lives here in Costa Rica - Way back in 1821, a Central American congress declared their independence from Spain, effective on September 15. Well, as you can imagine, here in Costa Rica - and as it is in the United States - Independence Day is a big holiday. Every town has a parade and, it seems, every school in every town has a band that marches in the parade. Unfortunately, it seems that every ... read more
