We got two flights, a taxi that basically refused to drop us to the bus station until we bullied him and then a bus to Yangshao. And then as it happened, we literally stood up to get off the bus and Dan sauntered up - he was just randomly checking to see if we had arrived! It was Kate’s last night in Yangshao so we went out to Bar 98, then Charlie, Dan, Seb, Noah, Irene and I moved onto this other bar where Charlie knew the manager and bargained him down to 5 quai a beer….it was supposed to be a karaoke bar but it seems the machine is always broken! Marketing mechanism! The next night we went out to Monkey Jane’s for a few where you and Charlie did a bit of singing with ... read more

mountains. he he he he he he. I think today is a wonderful day. i saw one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen-----the himilayas. i always knew that they would be big, but i don't think that there is any conceivable way to understand their enormity until you see them from an airplane (and it wasn't a small one---thank heavens!). We flew out of Chengdu at 7:30 this morning. It was nice to see Chengdu from the air also, since we flew in at night last time. It's a huge, sprawling tumor. Anyway, outside of Chengdu, the land turns green with patches of farm and after about 10 minutes on the plane, you begin to see, looming mysteriously in the distance the MIGHTY Himilayas. As we soared over the first wall we hit ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 28th 2006

Firstly I got a few photos from Cambodia. Every three months I must go to Cambodia to get a stamp in my passport then return to Bangkok. It's a bit of a pain in the ass but a lot better than having to go every month as a lot of foreigners have to. The visa run takes up a whole day (6:20 am leave & home about 5:00(ish)) I use a tour company that does everything for me. Meet them at the local pick up point, sit down on the bus, handover passport and sleep. At Cambodia I go to the newly renovated Visa application office and wait in a short queue. After getting a Visa to enter Cambodia I walk over the bridge that has a sh!te load of beggers & head to the casino ... read more

Can't believe...just lost the whole entry...with a view that it was probably too long anyway, here's the brief version. Went to Varkala to hang out on the beach for a few days...met some people who had been to Sri Sivananda's Yoga ashram and knew a lady I had met at Amma's who had also recommended I go. With the decision to go made...I finally gave in and bought some fisherman pants to do me Yoga in. bumped into the couple from Hull again, got a lift from a british guy on the back of his enfield to the train station, wicked journey. Got to Ashram, met some wicked people...the bloke called Vera, was a star, his wife worked at the ashram...he showed me all was not a pure at the ashram as you might have been ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong April 28th 2006

It’s the little things that show how organised Hong Kong is, like the adverts in the MTR stations. It’s not noticeable unless you look carefully, but when the train comes into each station you can see that the platform adverts are in the same order in each station. It shows the attention to detail in the culture there. The pace of the town shows clearly on the railway too - the Octopus card communicates with the ticket machines in 300milliseconds, so of course a light appears saying ‘Please wait’. It’s my last day in work, so I decide to treat my regular lunch-mates to dinner. As midday approaches we head towards a nearby café as usual, but there are around 40 people in the corridor (and I can’t afford dinner for everyone!). Two of the other ... read more

Asia » Japan April 28th 2006

Today turned out to be a busy day. We thought it would be more quiet, but we ended up doing a lot. We got an early start today, and went to the little train station. It took us to Gora, where we caught the cable car. It took us slowly up a steep hill, stopping a few times along the way. At the top we got onto the ropeway (it was a kind of big gondola that could carry 6-8 people). The views were beautiful and we were high up and going higher. We even got to see the top of Mt. Fuji! Though the rest was hidden by clouds. There is one place you pass by that is all barren, and all the sulfurous steam is pouring out from the mountain side. We switched to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai April 28th 2006

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay April 28th 2006

The coastline of southern Thailand is very dramatic. Huge limestone cliffs and towers come out of the water rising up hundreds of feet. The rock here is what is called porous- meaning that it soaks up water when it rains or from the ocean then the water drips out the bottom almost as though the rock is a sponge. When the water drips out the bottom it carries some minerals with it that stick together and form what are called stalactites. When I go rock climbing here I’m often climbing in stalactites. But I have to be careful. The stalactites can stay wet for a day or two after it rains.... read more
