Then this country is in alot of trouble, over the last few days I have seen numerous giant (giant for real real not for play play) gold / bronze statues of buddha looking incredibly rich and satisfyed, sometimes kicking it back and reclining surrounded by seas of smaller Buddha (Is Buddha the plural of Buddha?) and an even bigger ocean of donation boxes. One has to ask oneself how so much money is pumped into religion when so many people in the country are starving? but then all you have to think about is the Samoan church service where all the donations from each family are read out in front of the congregation to realise its a similar situation everywhere. Plus as a tourist wanting a taste of what the culture in Thailand is like aside ... read more

Ok, so last night I was just chilling in the hammock watching a movie in the open air common room at teh cottage and guess what?... I had a moment of boredom and I decided that it's enough and I must leave now. So at 1am I decided to go to my hut and start reading about other places around Malaysia... but still haven't made a decision as to where... maybe Cameron Highlands. It is also a long weekend here in Malaysia, Labour Day, on Monday. And that means lots and lots of tourists coming to the islands to get away... that means my turn to get away also. Anyway, so I started packing my stuff and cleaning so that I have to go. So far it's 2:46pm and I'm still lounging around... uh-oh! No, no, ... read more

My mind is mostly made up by now. I like China. The people are nice, the food is great and there's a nice energy to the place. But with this comes a bit of guilt, and this is something which I've also heard from other travellers as well. To use a perhaps not so great analogy, it's like going to the circus, admiring the animal show and leaving with the feeling that everything was great. When you do this you ignore the fact that the animals are sometimes mistreated. In the case of China, loving the place is one thing, but in the back of your mind there is always the issue of politics. When speaking to any Chinese, one generally avoids any controversial issues. But it is there. In the back of your mind, you ... read more

It's been many weeks since I've been able to do any updating. Most of you reading this know my mobility has been pretty limited. So, I will relate what I've observed from the car window back and forth to the office every day. There is SO much going on that even though I have traveled the same road twice a day for several weeks, it's like I'm seeing everything for the first time! Both sides of the streets are filled with rubble - dirt piled from trenches being dug (for water or sewer I think), boulders, large rocks, and trash - paper/plastic. Among all that is traffic, people, cows and dogs. I have not yet traveled on a road with marked lanes. Cars, autorickshaws (like motorized covered carriages - no doors - driver sits up front ... read more

After the free breakfast buffet in our Qingdao hotel we got a ride to the airport for our flight to Beijing. We had a driver that didn't speak any English so got some language instruction. We asked him if he had any children. It's a question that everyone asks and is not considered too personal. If fact, the Chinese consider it showing personal interest. Such a question soon after meeting someone my be too personal in the west. Another common greeting I heard was: "Chila ma?" (Have you eaten?) During some of the difficult famine years the answer was often NO. Now it's almost like saying "Hello." img ... read more

Clint and Mo went on a Chinese tour of the Inner Mongolian grasslands and Gobi Desert. The "tour" turned out to be less than they had bargained for: freezing coldness accompanied by complete chaos - bootlegging along with various other tour groups. Highlights: galloping recklessly across the grasslands and feeling sore for days afterwards, negotiating to ensure they were assigned camels without flaccid humps at the Gobi desert, watching the hijinks of Mongolian "cowboys," hiring military Chinese jackets to combat the cold, staying at the aptly titled Aluminum Smelter Hotel, and drinking too much "baijiu" ( a white spirit that should be renamed petroleum) to fall asleep despite the cold. Inner Mongolia, while interesting, is the type of place that one travels to once to say they've been there, and then tells unsuspecting friends that it's ... read more

Still keeping myself busy. Yesterday I went back to Akihabara ("electric town") and had a look around one of the biggest electronics department stores. Somehow, I successfully navigated the nine, mammoth floors to find a spare memory card and battery for my camera. Hopefully this should avoid any repeat of the 'tiger temple' visit in Thailand, even if I forget to charge my usual battery again ! Rounded off the night by visiting 'Bar Stella' in Asakusa and working my way through half of their drinks menu. Anyway, a fairly early start this morning to get across town to Ikebukuro. There is a major terminal station in Ikebukuro (as with most places in Tokyo), sandwiched between the west and east sides of the district. The west side is a culture zone, with art galleries and theatres, ... read more
