Bus rides, crazy 'speedboat' adventures, World Heritage Cities, night markets, hopes and dreams dashed... read on for the latest instalment... Ok, prepare for a bit of a ranting tirade here. I'm actually in low spirits right now because we took a gamble that didn't pay off. We heard about the Gibbon Experience in Nam Tha (Bokeo Province, Laos) that sounded amazing. It's only been operating for a year and a half, is remote and is home to a type of gibbon thought to be extinct until they found them there. There is about 70 left in the world. The project is run by a frenchman who set up a few treehouses in the jungle canopy and a network of ziplines to get around. They carry you 150mts off the ground and some go for 400 mts. ... read more

There are some travelers who are just unforgettable and Barry the Inebriated Scotsman was one. I met numerous other travelers in Vietnam who had encounters with Barry. This guy is a living legend and will not be forgotten on the Southeast Asian backpacking circuit any time soon. I first encountered Barry when he sat next to me on the 14 hour overnight bus ride from Hoi An to Nha Trang. Vietnamese buses are cheap ($6 for this trip), but are painfully slow since the drivers cannot exceed 50 kilometers an hour. The drivers honk constantly and swerve all over the road dodging various vehicles and pedestrians, so it is almost impossible to sleep on the overnight buses. Add Barry to the mix and you are looking at one loooong but entertaining journey. I did not think ... read more

Final stop before the Vietnamese capital was the old capital, Hue, previously home to the countries imperial leaders. Perhaps a minature version of China's forbidden city, was the Forbidden Purple Palace. The place had been left mostly destroyed after centuries of neglect and a ferocious series of attacks from the Americans during the war, however what has survived or been rebuilt was quite stunning. Culturally and spiritually the heart of Vietnam, many people performed the pilgramage to the city to see the place and visit the countless pagodas. This worked for us, as the high concentration of pagodas meant vegetarian food aplenty. During our stay we litterally stumbled over our Swiss friend Alaine on our ramble home one evening through the quiet streets. Together and with another friend we explored the city. Our final 14 hour ... read more

After just over a month at home, a period of time which encompassed an incompetent attempt by H&R Block to complete my US tax return by the IRS deadline, it was time to head into terra nova again, this time bearing the proud battle scars of my Indian campaign rather than the clueless expression that had accompanied me to New Delhi back in November. The planning for my intended destination - Australia - was done in a different fashion to that initial trip. Firstly, my luggage was a subset of my Indian packing - no mosquito net, or doxycycline, or water purification tablets needed, for example, so little thought was required on that score. Secondly, I'd decided that detailed route planning was completely pointless, so simply having a vague idea what I wanted to see would ... read more

Hello everybody! On this day, we were invited to go strawberry-picking with some of our friends. The other people in the pictures are Elizabeth (a fellow Ariel), Missy (a friend that works behind the scenes for "Under the Sea"), and Daisuke (plays Flounder in the show!) Missy, who put the whole trip together, actually referred to the trip as "Strawberry-Hunting," which we thought was REALLY cute! After hopping into the rental car we had for the day, we drove about an hour and a half to the popular strawberry-picking grounds in Japan known as Naruto. Here, we each paid 1,000 JPY (or about $10.00) to eat ALL-YOU-CAN for a half hour. We went to town! The strawberries here were divided by row into two different types, and were absolutely the most tastiest strawberries we both had ... read more

With our objective in Prachuap complete we boarded a bus in the morning headed for Phuket where we would meet up with the friends we had made in Bangkok. Benya lived and worked in Phuket and Wine, Jesse and Boi were flying down from Bangkok. The bus journey was 10 hours, which is a short one by our standards, but we really felt it. The journey was uncomfortable and seemed to drag on for ages. Nevertheless, we arrived in Phuket with bus narcosis and as Benya was still at work we were picked up at the station by one of her friends. We jumped on some bikes and were transported to a house that Benya had arranged for all of us to stay in. Not only was it a luxury to have our own place, but ... read more

it's 3 in the morning here and i'm wide awake. It's my own fault...i haven't been able to stay up past 7 since we got here. we leave for the airport in about 4 hours.....off to lhasa woo hoo. Chengdu isn't exactly the most beautiful city in the whole world, but it's not the worst i've seen either. it's kind of stuck in mediocrity. There are lots of people, lots of tall buildings.....so original for a city. For some reason the really young kids here have slits in their pants. we saw a little boy being carried around on a chair of some sort and his pants had a hole cut out for his unit. i guess it's more eco friendly than diapers? People here don't believe in planting things. From the road medians to the ... read more

My short time in Beijing only allowed for a brief taste ... but it really was delicious, right down to the Peking (Beijing) duck we feasted on for my birthday dinner. Having arrived in Beijing from India, a few things became immediately apparent. The air was cool and crisp (down to approx 15 degrees from 45 when I left India) - quite a relief, as I was struggling to fit my winter clothes into my pack! As part of the planning for the 2008 Olympics there were trees being planted all around the city, blossoms were in bloom and everything was neatly organised without a scrap of rubbish. Construction in Beijing is going crazy, apparently whole city blocks of hutons have been razed and construction is underway on massive new buildings - all part of the ... read more

We flew from Auckland to Singapore (via Brisbane) and landed in Singapore at about 3am. Tried to find somewhere to sleep at the airport and couldn't so ended up waiting for the first train to start at 5am! We went across to Malaysia (after waiting in a traffic jam with 10000 scooters!) and caught a bus up to a place called Mersing (probably equivalent to the Huntly of New Zealand ... but still very interesting!) Stayed in a backpackers in Mersing for the first night and then caught a ferry to Pulau Tioman (where Survivor was filmed I think) where we stayed at this little resort for a couple of nights. All the Malaysian's can't have seen many New Zealanders because we must of had about 100 photos taken of us ... all very funny :-) ... read more

After 7 months of being in Warren's pocket, it was time to be a brave girl and finally head out to do my own thing, and what better than meeting my favourite sister Huma in Beijing?! The last time I was in Beijing was 10 years ago and I was really looking forward to experiencing all the recent changes and seeing the city prepare to wow the world at the 2008 Olympics. On arrival at Beijing airport, the first excitement was seeing a young chap caught by the police for shoplifting a bottle of CocaCola - a true post-communist statement. Arriving in Beijing in Spring means DUST STORMS. This year is particularly bad with Beijing already having more than the annual average. So far 363thousand tonnes of dust from the Gobi desert and surroundings has dumped ... read more
