Asia » Japan » Tokyo April 26th 2006

Hi everybody, This next blog features an array of pictures from many different occassions, although one thing remains the same...the location. As you all can see, we frequent "The Hub" quite often - for birthday parties, going-away parties, and just to go out and have a good time. It's a convenient little place, located in the basement of the nearby Oriental Hotel, and with Melanie's 10%-off Disney discount, we can't think of a better place to go sometimes. The first couple of pictures are of us along with Summer, a fellow Ariel, and her boyfriend Jason, who was visiting for a week back in April. Of course we had to take him to "The Hub" and show him what we do here in Tokyo! Then, later that week, we were back to have a going-away party ... read more

Asia » Japan » Wakayama » Koyasan April 26th 2006

Well I made it to Koyasan - finally! I seemed to have missed hanging a left at Osaka and had to backtrack but it's all good. On the backtrack I met a young guy who had spent a year in NYC on his own because he wanted to improve his english. He found a place to live on the internet before he went (can you imagine???) - and HE thought I was brave for being in Japan on my own - sorry, I think he is the brave one for heading to NY with only an internet contact! We had a great chat and both agreed that Japan is much calmer and cleaner than North America - and that I am in for a bit of a shock in China:). The train ride to Koya from ... read more

E-mail #4 Keep on rollin'... Hi everyone, Hope everyone is doing well. I hear that the sun has finally shone in Vancouver..I'll cross my fingers for you and hope that it will stay from now through the summer! All is well in Asia. I managed to fight off the dirty food out of my system and I have been stung so many times by mosquitoes now that I think that I can produce an anti-sting remedy from my blood. #$%@ I hate mosquitoes!!! I am presently in Cambodia and love it! Today we rented pedal bikes and biked from 7-4pm amongst the ruins around Angkor Wat. For those who don't know, the Angkor Wat site is comprised of a number of temples (wats) built from the 8th to 12th century by the Khmer kings and its ... read more

Asia » Malaysia April 26th 2006

Hello All…well, we thought the ‘delightfulness’ of Kuala Lumpur deserved a blog all of its own. It all seems like a while ago now but we had a fantastic time. We arrived in KL after a delayed Air Asia flight. As a lovely change we were staying with family friends - those of you who remember Wing King (who my Mum used to child-mind (Karen)) - it was his parents Janice & John. They lived in Northampton for about 18 months 20 years ago (whilst working at St Crispins and mum looked after their son). They moved back to KL but had kept in touch with mum and dad over the years. So, it had been a while since I had seen them (I was only about 6 when they left!!!). We were very excited as ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao April 26th 2006

After Siem Reap, I pushed on to Bangkok for one night, which was interesting for only one thing. While I was walking down the street I heard my name called out, which is fairly unusual in foreign countries, turns out it was the people that I had traveled Cambodia with. Then, as I was walking to the bus with a backpack on, I turned around and was completely shocked to see Welsh/Irish guy I met on the boat into Laos and split a room with all through Laos, whom I hadn't seen for about a month. He was off to Bejing that night, so the chances of our pathes crossing was minute. Beyond seeing old travel buddies, in Bangkok I decided to make Ko Tao, an island a ways off the western coast of Thailand, my ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué April 26th 2006

North to South - the first two stops on the road down through Vietnam. In Hue, (pronounced Who - ay), Helen and I ate disgusting pasta that had so much garlic in it, we felt nauseous. Actually, everytime I crave western food I go for Pasta (in India it was usually the only western choice) and its always rotten so now I have finally learned and banned myself from ordering pasta. To work off the pasta in our bellies and to avoid looks of scorn and hatred from locals due to our pong we hired bicycles and cyled for hours around the city. It was great! We both couldn't remember the last time we were on bikes and these were ancient models with curving handlebars and hard high seats so that you were sitting high and ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Nusa Dua April 26th 2006

I am staying at the Conrad (Hilton Family) Resort in Bali and it is stunning .. truly amazing. When I arrived at the airport there was a BWM X5 waiting to take me to the resort. The drive there was, thankfully, uneventful. When we arrived at the hotel it was to a stunning scene -- a massive waterfall on a stone wall with two massive torches buring on either side -- so sorry I did not get a picture of that. (Will probably be back there in a few weeks, so will get one next time!) Anyway, the entrance may have set one up for disappointment as it set such a standard... but no, the rest of the resort was just as opulent and wonderful. And the staff was even better. If you have a chance, ... read more

Asia » India » Himachal Pradesh April 26th 2006

This is where we moved to, on the 26th of April. We were living in Tibetan Ashoka Guest House in McLeoed Gunj. We decided to move away from the city (yup, we will come right back) to the quieter little village of Bhagsu. Bhagsu was nothing by hills about four years ago. Now, it is hopping with modern hotels, guest houses, and a ton of people from Israel. Here is where the party is at! One tip, now on when you try to picture this part of the world, please throw in Yoga, massage and meditation centers, as many as you wish. Get creative. Let them be of all shapes, sizes, textures and smells, energies (and auras). Forgive me, I get carried away. So, a trek up a steep hill is where we chose to stay. ... read more
