Asia » Hong Kong April 26th 2006

Our day was spent at Ocean Park, an amusement park and aquarium in Aberdeen on the south side of Hong Kong Island. We hit the rides all day long and had a contest to see who could make the best silly face for the ride cameras. I, of course, made a standard-issue cripple face - complete with clasped hands and drool all while trying to lick my ear, and on the last ride pulled such a stern look that you'd think I wasn't having any fun at all. My vote goes to Denise though, whose hair was flying straight back, and had such a terrified look on her face you'd think her skin was about to peel off. But the highlight of the day was the clear(ish) skies at night allowing us an illuminated view of ... read more

We've seen and done a lot so it seems as though we've been here a lifetime. When we browse through our pictures we don't really comprehend our faces. It all seems as thought it's someone else staring back at us, someone else that had all those experiences. Today was just a walk on the beach. Our taxi dropped us off at the far end of the beach and we worked our way back. There was lots of activity considering it is the middle of the week. Wedding photographers were everywhere. Women in wedding gowns and men in tuxes dotted the rocky beach bent in impossible poses that looked terribly uncomfortable but I guess looked good ... read more

I am sad that I am determined to travel light. There are tons of great used book stores in Chaing Mai, the best I have ever seen. They have everything under the sun and wish they were in Arlington. I am trying to resist though and have limited myself to four books although I did sell three back. Pretty good actually. The other day I decided to take a Thai cooking class. I had read about them but wasn't particularly interested until my brother and his wife took one in Phuket that included a market tour. One of my favorite parts of travelling in foreign countries is going to the grocery stores and food markets. The idea of having a tour of one with someone explaining things and answering all my questions was something I couldn't ... read more

I spent the day examining how the bus company manage modifications to their buses by trial, examination and then modifying the whole fleet. It’s a process that seems to generate more paperwork than spanner time but seems to get results. In the evening I went to Happy Valley race course, the headquarters of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and one of the entertainment epicentres in HK. Ronald has membership so I meet Rose, Arthur, Toni and Bill again and we’re able to have dinner in the member’s box overlooking the finish line. There are five races, and after two I’ve worked out how the odds are displayed and roughly how to bet, so I spread around £5 on three horses (it’s big money!) and make a small profit. Keeping the original stake and reinvesting the winnings, ... read more

umm...i am in the crazy city of delhi now.... we went to amritsar first and saw the golden temple which was one of the more wonderful and wonderous times i have had. it truly was a great experience and i think that anyone coming to india must see it and see it at night. all the sikh families we met were very nice and polite. then the forever train to delhi which is 180 from the simple life of mcleod ganj. went to the taj mahal yesterday in agra...it is a marvelous structure but it had a reverence to time passed. its dedication to love is astounding and reassuring that love transends all. outside dehli is the ba'hai lotus temple...it was amazing and i am very curious about the ba'hai faith .... it is a magnificent ... read more

Set off on our exploration.... Booked bus ticked to go to melaka tomorrow - it was literally 5 minute walk and was really easy to book tickets. So anyways, I guess I have one more entry for you all before we leave for Australia. Funny story actually. Emily and I were starving yesterday at around 9 pm, and we had a craving for green curry with rice, so we set out on Koh Sarn Road to look for a reasonably priced restaurant. We came across one that looked fairly modern and nice, but both thought something seemed wierd about it after we walked in. There were only guys eating at the restaurant. After going inside, a man asked us if we needed any help. We just said we wanted to see the menu, so he sent us to the back. As we were walking, all the guys were just starring at us, so Emily and I just opened a menu and ignored what ... read more

Yesterday, the island received news that the "dog hunters" were here. To start off there are many stray dogs around the island and some cause grief here, as they are known as the "jungle dogs". But some have become the house dogs of some chalets and businesses around here. There is at Nazri Nipah, Kumba, Fifi and her little brother. The cutests dogs you've ever seen. Just happy little things that follow you around. The staff at Nazri's were determined that Kumba and Fifi's brother were not gonna get shot by the hunters. Everyone kept a good eye on them yesterday to make sure they wouldn't wander away. These hunters do not follow the pet rule.. it just doesn't exist. Even if the dog is chained or has a collar, they shoot to kill and that's ... read more
