Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Cebu City April 26th 2006

firstly, i will give you a brief background about myself......i am ricky, from cebu.....i was teaching in USC when i first heard that i was accepted for a study grant in the Netherlands....so in August 1998, for the first time in my life, i set foot in a foreign country.....i stayed there for 2 years to complete my MSc in Biochemical Engineering in Delft Technical University..... To make the story shorter, it was a school-house-school scenario for the first year until i began to assimilate into the dutch society....i made friends (enemies too..hahaha) and maybe the whole Filipino community...... When i finished my MSc, i had to go back to USC to return service.....but the urge to seek for greener pasture was more overwhelming than returning service.....I left again in November 2001.......but this time in Maastricht, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ko Samet April 26th 2006

well, the plan was to enjoy my final week of solo travel by chilling out on the white sand beaches of Ko Samet. I reached Ko Samet without too much delay (okay, it took a few extra hours but that's to be expected), found a decently priced bungalow close to the beach and sat down for a nice lunch before hitting the beach. Except that I never got to hit the beach because i started not feeling so well and decided to stay in teh shade. Then i startd feeling worse so I skipped dinner and was in bed by 7:30pm where I stay for a day and a half except for when i had to go down three exhausting flights or stairs to buy water. The bungalow is a lovely backpacker accomodation which I've enjoyed ... read more

I decided to come to Cambodia with Stephanie and Gemma, two English girls I met in Pai. Ok I heard the road from the Thai border into Cambodia was bad but you can't even dream up a "road" like that. It would have been smoother to drive across the rice fields. The journey took 5 hours from Bangkok to the border, on an air-conditioned bus with reclining seats. Then at the Cambodian border we got ripped off on our visitors visa and paid 40 dollars which we later learned was double price. Next we hop on a small bus that looked like it was suitable for transporting live pigs. No air conditioning. I thought Thailand was as hot as it gets but trust me Cambodia is almost unbearable. The ride was uncomfortable to say the least. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 26th 2006

Before we left Phuket we got to do many more things that we had always wanted to do. We went Elephant trekking, Ox Cart racing, Sea Canoeing, visited the floating Muslim village in the middle of the Andaman sea and went to James Bond island which was cool (always wanted to see this place). Songkron (Thai new year) in Phuket was excellent and everyone got very wet. We were on the roof with one of our neighbours', we got the hose pipe out and sprayed all the people below. Songkron can also be a dangerous time for people riding bikes, because people drink too much and buckets of water and ice are thrown at them when riding past. The first casualty was a 56 year old foreign man who got so drunk he decided to try ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Northern Thailand April 26th 2006

Having heard great things about this place and also from reading up on it we decided to do an overnight trip to the highest peak in thailand - Doi Inthanon. This trip was off our own back and involved me hanging onto the back of our motorbike as James bombed it along at 70 km/h (ok, thats not that fast but using words like "bombed" makes it seem cool!) and being in so much pain from the constant vibration of our pretty shit honda that we felt numb and had pins and needles for ages afterwards! The pain on your bum was immense after subjecting it to 2 hours each way just to get to the national park let alone up the bloody mountain! Bike's can be fun but probably best in short bursts and not ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo April 26th 2006

Hi everybody, This next blog features an array of pictures from many different occassions, although one thing remains the same...the location. As you all can see, we frequent "The Hub" quite often - for birthday parties, going-away parties, and just to go out and have a good time. It's a convenient little place, located in the basement of the nearby Oriental Hotel, and with Melanie's 10%-off Disney discount, we can't think of a better place to go sometimes. The first couple of pictures are of us along with Summer, a fellow Ariel, and her boyfriend Jason, who was visiting for a week back in April. Of course we had to take him to "The Hub" and show him what we do here in Tokyo! Then, later that week, we were back to have a going-away party ... read more

Asia » Japan » Wakayama » Koyasan April 26th 2006

Well I made it to Koyasan - finally! I seemed to have missed hanging a left at Osaka and had to backtrack but it's all good. On the backtrack I met a young guy who had spent a year in NYC on his own because he wanted to improve his english. He found a place to live on the internet before he went (can you imagine???) - and HE thought I was brave for being in Japan on my own - sorry, I think he is the brave one for heading to NY with only an internet contact! We had a great chat and both agreed that Japan is much calmer and cleaner than North America - and that I am in for a bit of a shock in China:). The train ride to Koya from ... read more

E-mail #4 Keep on rollin'... Hi everyone, Hope everyone is doing well. I hear that the sun has finally shone in Vancouver..I'll cross my fingers for you and hope that it will stay from now through the summer! All is well in Asia. I managed to fight off the dirty food out of my system and I have been stung so many times by mosquitoes now that I think that I can produce an anti-sting remedy from my blood. #$%@ I hate mosquitoes!!! I am presently in Cambodia and love it! Today we rented pedal bikes and biked from 7-4pm amongst the ruins around Angkor Wat. For those who don't know, the Angkor Wat site is comprised of a number of temples (wats) built from the 8th to 12th century by the Khmer kings and its ... read more

Hello All…well, we thought the ‘delightfulness’ of Kuala Lumpur deserved a blog all of its own. It all seems like a while ago now but we had a fantastic time. We arrived in KL after a delayed Air Asia flight. As a lovely change we were staying with family friends - those of you who remember Wing King (who my Mum used to child-mind (Karen)) - it was his parents Janice & John. They lived in Northampton for about 18 months 20 years ago (whilst working at St Crispins and mum looked after their son). They moved back to KL but had kept in touch with mum and dad over the years. So, it had been a while since I had seen them (I was only about 6 when they left!!!). We were very excited as ... read more
