Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City April 28th 2006

Yup, so I didn't eand up going to Cameron Highlands, but decided on Melaka, in the more southern parts of Malaysia. Johan decided to join me to get away from Pangkor life for a few days, so we embarked on the the last ferry out and caught the 10:30 pm 8 hour bus ride here. After switching buses 3 times, we finally made it here this morning at around 6:45am. Without a ounce of shut eye, we jumped in a cab and headed to this great guesthouse called Sama-Sama. It's yet another reggae theme with really nice owners. The place is so serene, with beautiful sunlit rooms around an inner garden terrace with a coi pond. Very nice place and at a good price too. I haven't done much today as I feel like this journey ... read more

I have spent the past four days in a town called Emei, which lies at the base of Emei Shan (Mt. Emei), about 150 km. south of Chengdu. My goal was to climb to the summit of Emei Shan, which is at about 3100 meters above sea level, while starting at about 500 meters above sea level. I decided to challenge myself a bit, while I’m passing the time in China, but I may have over-done it a bit. The Lonely Planet says to allow oneself three days to ascend and descend Emei Shan and since I know I am in lousy shape, I gave myself those three days. However, I managed to climb it in two and a half days, but it was pure torture. In typical Chinese fashion, the mountain had a path, with ... read more

Written Thursday Night ----------------------------- Well, it's been a week now. I'm slowly adapting to this place, but I'm unbelievably busy right now. So far I've spent the majority of each day trying to work out the logistics of living here - buying a cell phone, buying an electronic dictionary (now I can read anything, given enough time!), managing the busy routes (still haven't done this one well ... it takes me almost two and a half hours to get home every day. I've gotten my morning commute time down to a little over an hour, though). I'm hemorrhaging money unbelievably fast. The bus fares alone put me back about $10 every day. I have to pay for my lunch food, too. And they don't trust digital monies, so it's not common to be able to use ... read more

Just to reiterate I may have gone a little crazy with the old shopping in Bangkok. All for around 550 NZ dollars, not bad eh? I may be inadvertantly supporting sweatshop labour, and my environmental credentials are now ... read more

Tuesday Michael was supposed to leave for Australia, we had to be at the airport by 6.40pm so left the house at around 5.50pm. When we arrived at the airport we were told that his Qantas flight (QF20) had been cancelled, to make matters worse there wasn't one Qantas representative at the airport to provide details. We had no choice but to leave, in any case cousin Junee had invited us to dinner at a Vietnamese reataurant in Quezon City. After a tasty meal we went to a bar called Ratsky to listen to some live music and consume a few San Mig drafts. The band playing had a real showman as the main singer, he also had lot's of jokes though some were in Tagalog. There were quite a few people from other countries in ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Pulau Tioman April 28th 2006

I woke up in my hostel bed in Singapore with a throbbing head ache. I felt the back of my head where two large bumps brought back a painful reminder of the previous nights proceedings. I would leave Singapore that morning. I caught the first bus to Johar Baru, then 2 connecting buses to Mersing, followed by a one hour speed boat ride to Air Batang on the island of Paluau Tioman off the East Coat of Peninsular Malaysia. Tioman is a sleepy tropical island filled with empty beaches, friendly locals, cheap accomodation and some of the best snorkeling and diving in South East Asia. I arrived at dusk and was taken aback by the stunning beauty of this place. The setting sun seemed to illuminate the beach and surrounding rain forest, the perfect place to ... read more

Geo: 14.6553, 73.9894Could honestly say it snowed in Denmark from NYE to Easter - was fed up of it I can tell ya. So Goa was especially great but also because it has no noticeable big insects (but did see loads a dolphins & baba ones, elephants, lizards, frogs, bats, ants, dogs, cats, cows & sea snakes) AND it has proper gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous vege food ( we are vegetarian if u hadn't guessed by that), every single meal was fabulous, and shopping was great, ahem. Think of the nicest people/race you know and double it for Indian's. And the weather is hot hot hot. Thankfully Tourists weren't that cool where we were but it is end of season, we did see some 'too cool for school' ones at a trendy beach bar at the 'must ... read more

-- MALAYSIA TO THAILAND: KO PHA NGAN -- ...The night air was thick and humid. But at least it was quiet. As my tired head held up no longer, it banged against the window pane on the bumpy ride to the border. I woke to a surreal scene of thick fog as we stopped for food. With a parched mouth following my 4am munch of a melted chocolate bar, I bought some veg filled pao and crawled back into the bus for sleep... ...the border crossing was smooth and painless and I couldn't help but smile at yet another new stamp in my quickly filling passport. Crossing into the southern provinces, although akin to northern Malaysian, I felt distinctly better. The peaceful yellow flags of Buddhism flying smoothly beside the national Thai ones, symbolising the ... read more

Well got here in one piece, AND WHAT A LONG JOURNEY IT WAS!!!!!! Finished work at 6pm Tuesday then train to Preston, train to Manchester Picadilly, train to Manchester airport, overnight in a hotel then Plane to Frankfurt and finally Jumbo Jet to Hong Kong, arriving here this morning at 10:15am. Not a comfortable journey, Lufthansa don't give much leg room, though to be fair they seem quite generous in handing out the free drink! Gotta say, (cos I'm a show off)... HOW CLEVER AM I! A few weeks ago, when I was trying to use up last years leave before this years started, I spent one Thursday sitting with my laptop in my dining room going over every minute detail of the Hong Kong leg of this trip and today it paid dividends. Everything worked ... read more
