Asia » Laos April 30th 2006

Hands down, this has been our favourite place so far. The relaxed culture, the stunning and ever-changing landscapes, and the wonderful people, all made this a place we want to return to. Our favorite foods were the rice soup for breakfast and the amazing riverweed (like sea weed but thicker and lightly fried in garlic and sesame seed, usually eaten with fresh chilli and sticky rice), both of which were our main staple in Laos. Other memories include: *- paying for dinner at restaurant in any combination of currencies including kip. dollars, baht and euro. All are accepted. *- dancing with the head man of Muang Ngoi village - he asked Stef twice ;) *- nights at the Vietnamese bar - when everything else closed for curfew in Luang Prabang at 11.30pm, Vinh would take us ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan April 30th 2006

The trip to Gili involved a 17 minute flight and terrible harassment from the locals in Lombok... Steph, Sally and I were glad to get over to Gili (by ferry) where everyone is way more laid back... The islands -- there are three; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air -- are quiet during the day and a divers haven. At night Trawangan would turn into a party beach... each night a different nightclub along the beach would have a "party" which would involve loud music and dancing often until the sun came up. The accommodation on Gili is varied, but since the girls had convinced me to "rough it" a bit, we stayed in little huts for about $10 a night. For the first two nights we shared a little hut -- it was ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 30th 2006

Days 168-172 We had breakfast then caught the boat across to Koh Phi Phi. We said goodbye to the girls for a few days as they caught a boat to their flash hotel at the top of the island. We got a taxi boat to a ramshakle little beach and checked into our little beach hut. The beach was really small but so gorgeous and the sea was emerald green and crystal clear. We jumped into the sea for a swim, had lunch then chilled on the beach and in our hammock. Our hut was right on the beach so the views were fantastic. Carly was cursing the place however when it came to showertime as the water was muddy!!! It comes from a well and is gross. It was a hard decision whether to stay ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta April 30th 2006

Angkor was our last stop in Cambodia. From there we stopped in at Phnom Penh for a night and then it was back on the Mekong River and south to Vietnam. We decided to spend a few days in the Delta area before Saigon. Although we'd seen quite a lot of the Mekong in the last few weeks this area had a whole different feel to it. A lot more money in Vietnam thats for sure, loads more people and infrastructure. We spent our time split between the border town of Chou Doc and the nearby town Can Tho. In Can tho we took an early morning boat ride out to the floating markets. This started as strange day out due our "captian". The previous day we had been walking around the town just checking the ... read more

Our new pets are so cute! We got them from our friend, Daisuke, who owns the reptile shop. Daisuke just lives around the corner from us, so a few weeks ago we walked to his house to check out his personal zoo! He has a silver fox, a piglet (which can roam the house as it pleases), a possum, turtles and a MONKEY! It is the cutest thing I have ever seen!... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Lampang April 30th 2006

I really like Lampang, a small city with virtually no tourist attractions about an hour south of Chaing Mai. After the tourism ridiculousness of Chaing Mai, it was a welcome change. All Lampang is known for is horse-drawn carriages (left over from Portugese teak traders) and of course, teak. Although there are not a ton of teak structures left, there were still a few including my wonderful guesthouse, where I hope I go back some day. The other thing I think Lampang should be known for is its dozens of hair salons. This is a city of about 40,000 people and I think ther is one hair salon for every 10 people. Since none of the salons seemed particularly busy, I really don't know how they stay open. One of the few tourist attractions near Lampang ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville April 30th 2006

Well I'm definitely not in Thailand anymore! I was thinking things were going so well having just paid only 1000 baht for my Cambodian visa when I'd heard people were having to pay upwards of 1300-1400B. Plus I was alone since there were no other foreigners on my minibus, so I was thankful to have a painless border crossing. But then, I literally stepped across the border and things were very different. Two kids giving me seriously sad puppy dog eyes begged me for my bottle of water and of course I gave it to them. but then they just pointed at me, snickered and ran off!! Great. So I jump on the back of a motorcycle with a seemingly nice Cambodian fellow and we take a nice ride to Koh Kong (a port town where ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Rendezvous Hotel April 30th 2006

Friday 21st - Tuesday 24th Last day at Dolphin Bay. Not seen any dolphins but think perhaps it’s too hot, never below 35 degrees. Our new friend, a local dude, has assured Hugh that they’re about in the evening. The weekend brought a new style of resident. Last week was predominantly European, now, large Thai families. The well to do of Bangkok me thinks. We hear them around 7 - 7.30 am in the pool but by 10am the place is deserted (avoiding the intense sun from 10 till 4). Light skin, I'm told, being considered a reflection of health, wealth and beauty. We, naturally, haven’t grasped this and boldly march about with lots of pink bits commenting on how hot it is! Katie remains untouched as we slip, slap, slop on a frequent basis. She ... read more

First of all thanks for all the comments and messages from you guys back home - its really nice to hear from you and that you are finding the blogs entertaining! So, here goes the food journalism for today! Left the skank hotel also known as 'The Shining' yesterday - thank the lord it was ming a ding ding! Got to the bus station for our transport to Singapore - bought more eye candy and a lipstick which you can eat! Very amused yet again waiting for the bus. A strange guy was hanging around us asking people if they wanted a ticket to singapore, so we ignored him and acted tough, then he came over and asked if we have a ticket to singapre, and of course we did, so i stupidly showed him and ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Baga April 30th 2006

Our last few days in Goa were spent packing. We had the bar to pack away for another season. It’s amazing how much junk you accumulate over 6 months, a roaring bonfire put that in order, only problem was the leaping flames managed to shrivel a section of the mango tree, luckily the fruits weren’t damaged and the landlady got a good crop this year. We also had the apartment to pack away, everything back in to the suitcases and boxes for another 5 months. We also have 2 bikes and the car to put into storage so as you can imagine it’s a busy time for us and at the end of it all we are totally knackered. Then there was the accountant to sort out, taxes to pay and we also had to find ... read more
