Dear all, We have just left the island of Koh Tao after 12 glorious days basking in the compete beauty of the island. We ave moved on to Ko Samui and the culture change is more than a large shock ot us both. The days since our scuba diving course were spent relaxing by thepool of our hotel (pool!!! never thought we could afford such a luxury!!) and exploring the island. We decided to embark on a round the island snorkling boat trip which was fantastic! basically the boat stopped at 5 different dive sites around the island and we all jumped off and went looking for the fish, of which we saw thousands!! In some cases they were swimming right up to our masks, which was quite amazing, we also bought an underwater camera so ... read more

well i dont know if i menioned in my last blog but i had booked on to do an padi open water diving course. Everything was going really well but then when it came to have the thing in my mouth for over an hour at a time i couldnt do it. Purely because i fractured my jaw last year (when i had to eat weetabix for a month) and its a problem that just causes me stupid amounts of pain if i annoy it so i had to call it quits. What a fat waste of money! Never mind. Other than that reilly (the man i met last week) went to the black moon party on the beach, many buckets were drunk and it all got quite messy. Got sunburnt yesterday on my nose as ... read more

Geo: 33.9184, 108.719The newest addition to Xi'an's multitude of cultural sights! Very artificial but if you arrive expecting fake buildings, man made lakes and every gimmic under the sun (which any canny traveller in China does!) it makes for a good fun day out. I visited during May Festival, which meant the newly opened park was simply a backdrop for an erray of performances and activities i.e. dance shows, lion dancing, puppet shows, fireworks and laser show movies on the lake. Everything lights up at night and is beautiful.... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City April 30th 2006

Today has been crazy! As we said on our last blog we were uninspired by Melaka so we have done a bike tour today to take us out of the city into the countryside to learn and mingle with the locals. It's run by a guy from the hostel, Alias (spitting image of Andys mate Arthur Ball). The same guy who sent us to the language school. We had read comments on the tour which all said it was great, so we had high expectations. We were picked up at 8.30am along with 2 danish girls. 25minutes later we were in the countryside at his house immediately being attacked by mozzies even though we had sprayed. From here we were given our transport for the day, a mountain bike each. We rode through palm oil plantations ... read more

Right, listen up folks, if your ever in Hong Kong the best excursion you can do is the 'go racing' trip! I know what your thinking, we're not really into racing, we're not gamblers, WELL NEITHER AM I, but just trust me, this was such good value for money. To be honest when I woke up this morning I wasn't overly in the mood for it, I was still not firing on full thrusters after yesterdays over exhursion excursion, and just wasnt sure if a day spent doing something I normally wouldn't be seen dead at would help, especially as it required me to get dressed up more formally. But it proved just the ticket! I'd organised this via the internet before I went, and had pondered it for a number of days as the offer ... read more

After leaving the monastery we have the tedium of a 7.5 hour bus journey to Quinchong, where we will start our Yangtze River cruise. None of us are looking forward to bus journey, not just because of the length, but also because on previous buses some of the passengers frequently spat loudly out of the window. At first we are feeling smug with ourselves, because we have managed to get the front seats which should ensure that we'll have a good view. Also, the spitting we feared does not take place as this is one of the big modern air-conditioned coaches in which the windows do not open. Unfortunately, the journey is still a trying experience because the bus driver and his assistant have an almost incessant converstaion that is as frantic as it is loud. ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan April 30th 2006

To give you some idea why Rajasthan - the Land of Kings - had always been a big part of my India travel plans, here are some quotes from the LP guide. (Also known as The Book by travellers - make sure you pronounce the capitals - and "your Bible" by sneering touts.) "A legend come to life... magical towns and cities... whimsical, magnificent palaces and forts... collection of small, fierce kingdoms... living by ancient, violent codes of chivalry and death before dishonour". How could I resist that?! My travel plans changed a lot as I read through The Book, but Rajasthan was always a given. I had planned to travel on from Agra by train, but my route through Rajasthan was very much on the Tourist Trail, so it was well-serviced by buses as well. ... read more
