Asia » Japan » Okinawa April 30th 2006

The island of Okinawa is by far very, very, very different from the rest of Japan. It seems like a completely different country. The weather there is gorgous. The average temperature year round is 23 degrees celcius. How perfect is that? There is so much room there, unlike Tokyo. The streets and houses aren't crowded and not everyone is in a rush to get some place. It's very relaxed and laid back. The people look healthier and happier and are more friendlier than in Tokyo. There are parks everywhere in Okinawa (unlike Tokyo, which is a concrete jungle - you do get parks, but you have to look hard for them). The best part is that the dogs in Okinawa are big and not teeny tiny like the little toy dogs in Tokyo. It was so ... read more

This was our last day in Yangshuo before we got our nightmare bus journey to Hong Kong. We went and had some much needed retail therapy then had a lovely stroll around the town and down by the river with Dan. Then went to our final Kung Fu training! Went to get our bus and poor Georgie was sure we were going to miss it cause we were waiting at the travel agents. Ended up taking a short cut - through the food market, which was completely disgusting, crabs, frogs, insects everywhere - in the lashing rain to the bus. Then found out it wasn't even going to Shenzhen. Georgie nearly had a heartattack but the bus wasn't too bad, we were delighted with the beds but when you HAVE to lie down for 10 hours ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ko Samet April 30th 2006

Well been in Ko Samet all week, it's been amazing, I've been to heaven and I didn't even have to die!!! The island was amazing, just unbelievable beautiful. We chilled out most days, I did a day of Muay Thai boxing which was absolutely earth shaking! We rented bikes to travel the island which was so much fun and we found a private beach, perfect, all to ourselves, many great moments on that beach!! We saw the sun setting, there was only six of us but it was just remarkable, probably the best thing I have ever experienced. There was me, Dutch Jess, English Jess, Saskia, Issac and Alice the Belgium girl, oh and the scabby eared dog. We had such a laugh about this crazy, dirty, annoying dog that kept folowing us. I threw a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai April 30th 2006

Well, Chiang Mai was better than I thought it would be. I'd heard reports varying from "I love it!" to "It's a repulsive human zoo!" so I was wondering how I'd feel about the place myself. To be honest our welcome wasn't the greatest. We arrived a couple of hours later than estimated, the bus spilling out its contents (that is, us and several other assorted westerners) on the door step of a hostel with no idea where we were. Common enough but we hadn't gotten caught in that trap for ages. Mildly annoyed, Jim went to get our bags from the back of the van and inadvertently stepped into an open sewer. Some bright spark had removed the concrete slab and not replaced it. This was not obvious in the dark, concealed as it was ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Puerto Princesa April 30th 2006

St. Paul's Subterranean River National Park in Puerto Princesa, Palawan certainly deserves to count among the 7 wonders of the world. My friends and I thought it's about time we visit this famous underground river which has been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site , and check out the many other attractions of this southern part of Palawan (the northern part deserves a separate blog!). We were pleasantly surprised to find many more wonders in Puerto Princesa. And this is how our adventure went. St. Paul's Underground River It took us a couple of hours to reach the place. That's over land. Next step is to board a boat passing limestone cliffs to reach the entrance to the underground river. The boat ride was another 30 minutes. When we got off the boat, we found a path ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka April 30th 2006

On our way to Kandy we decided to stop off at little town called Nuwara Eliya which has a reputation of being just a little English, white picket fences, rose bushes etc, so we thought why not stop for a cup of good old tea... Once again the scenery was very green and hilly and we managed to find a very nice English hotel which was just beyond our budget - I really have forgotten what a hostel looks like never mind a dorm bed but we tell ourselves it's just for one night... And as it's only for one night we decided to live it up and eat at the most expensive place in town, at "The Hill Country Golf Club". Only one snag, we have to find it first. Now on the map the ... read more

Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Chennai April 30th 2006

From Mamallapuram went back to Chennai for train to Madurai. It was so hot when I arrived in the station that an Indian family were fanning themselves so I asked if I could have some of their air and this is how I met Sudha, She was also travelling to Madurai for her grandfather's 80th birthday Madurai was crowded with holiday makers and people visiting the Meenakshi Temple which has wonderful carved and coloured gopurams and a fabulous inside although non Hindus cannot go into the Meenakshi shrine. The Gandi Museunm was also worth a visit as it presented the story from a different perspective from the British history books ... read more

Asia » Laos April 30th 2006

Hands down, this has been our favourite place so far. The relaxed culture, the stunning and ever-changing landscapes, and the wonderful people, all made this a place we want to return to. Our favorite foods were the rice soup for breakfast and the amazing riverweed (like sea weed but thicker and lightly fried in garlic and sesame seed, usually eaten with fresh chilli and sticky rice), both of which were our main staple in Laos. Other memories include: *- paying for dinner at restaurant in any combination of currencies including kip. dollars, baht and euro. All are accepted. *- dancing with the head man of Muang Ngoi village - he asked Stef twice ;) *- nights at the Vietnamese bar - when everything else closed for curfew in Luang Prabang at 11.30pm, Vinh would take us ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan April 30th 2006

The trip to Gili involved a 17 minute flight and terrible harassment from the locals in Lombok... Steph, Sally and I were glad to get over to Gili (by ferry) where everyone is way more laid back... The islands -- there are three; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air -- are quiet during the day and a divers haven. At night Trawangan would turn into a party beach... each night a different nightclub along the beach would have a "party" which would involve loud music and dancing often until the sun came up. The accommodation on Gili is varied, but since the girls had convinced me to "rough it" a bit, we stayed in little huts for about $10 a night. For the first two nights we shared a little hut -- it was ... read more
