We took a late day flight to Da Nang; arriving at dusk, so missed seeing it in the light. Da Nang was larger and more spread out than we originally thought; with lots of hotels and larger resorts along the beach. We had book a nice French Vietnamese colonial hotel in Hoi An. The old city is the tourist centre with busy and vibrant fresh fish and produce markets along the river with surrounding newer urban expansion away from the old town centre and market river areas. The old town centre caters to the tourist trade with some good quality shops and restaurants. Night sees the traditional lanterns lighting the shop fronts. Hallo meine lieben, Und wieder einmal schreibe ich, um euch von meinen fantastischen Erlebnissen zu berichten. Wie versprochen habe ich die restlichen Fotos hoch geladen. Schmökert mal ein bisschen. So wo war ich stehen geblieben? Ach ja auf dem Weg nach Nha Trang. Der Bus dahin war komplett leer. Auch interessant war, das wir mitten in den Bergen öfters ohne Grund stehen geblieben sind und der Fahrer einfach verschwunden ist. Nach ein paar Minuten tauchte er dann wieder auf, die Hände voll. Er hat wohl ein bisschen eingekauft?! In Nha Trang angekommen überkam mich sofort das Gefühl wieder weg zu müssen also habe ich gleich kurzer Hand den Nachtplan nach Hoi An gebucht. Being woken at 5am was not in the plan! But with the Vietnamese not having too much consideration for there fellow passengers this is exactly what happened. With some people getting off - with huge boxes (fridge/freezer!?) and some new people getting on I decided now could be a good time to stretch my legs and have a wee. With the loo only being slightly less disgusting than a well used festival toilet! I didn't hover for long before heading back to my bed - which now contained 3 Vietnamese and a baby!! How did this happen!? So, sitting in the corridor as I now felt pretty wide awake! 05 juin 2015 : Départ à 8h40 pour une promenade sur le lac Tonlé Sap au milieu de ses villages flottants. Retour par la rivière jusqu'à une maison d'hôtes où nous prenons un repas (moyen). Le bus nous emmène ensuite à un shopping center sans grand intérêt. Nous retournons à l'hôtel jusqu'à 17h00. Départ pour l'aéroport, avec un plateau pique-nique pas très bon. Nous décollons à 19h00 à bord d'un ATR72 comme ceux que nous avions empruntés en Afrique l'année passée. Nous sortons de l'aéroport de Da Nang à 21h00 et transfert en bus jusqu'à Hoi An. Dommage qu'il n'y ait pas de visite de Da Nang de prévu car notre première impression est que c'est une ville magnifique.... read more

Da Nang! My first visit I stayed within a couple of blocks of the train station -- an older neighborhood with coffee shops and a lot of traffic, nothing very interesting. I thought the city was not that interesting and didn't have any desire to stay much longer than the short time in transit from the plane to the train. But now each time I go to Da Nang, I explore and discover so many dimensions -- it's a rich, modern city with a more contemporary mindset than the small city where I live. There are tall buildings, more modern structures, the traffic is heavy but seems to move in predictable patterns. There are coffee shops with very good coffee along the river, promenades along the river, and a night life...people are out a little later ... read more
