Like ships passing through -- a glancing stride -- too short but how good and comforting to see good friends and how I missed them before they left. Linda and Maureen came to Quang Ngai to visit for a couple of days. They were met in Da Nang by the fearless tireless and incredibly charming Mr. Lam, one of the profs here at PDU. Mr. Lam is a swimmer and a guitar player and an English and American culture enthusiast. His English is impeccable and he generously took off an entire day and night to go to Da Nang to meet Linda and Maureen who were flying in .. he got tickets on the sleeper car and came by train with them on the 1.23 pm SE3 train...which I was sure would arrive at 4:15 according ... read more

It's Saturday morning and I have a flight to Danang at midday, and I'm moving slowly. I still haven't booked any accommodation for next week, in fact nothing is set in stone after tomorrow night. I need to spend some time on Trip Advisor and get myself sorted. But, in the meantime I have two nights of luxury to look forward to. I am heading to The Sunrise Resort at Cua Dai beach, outside Hoi An. This resort is way outside my trip budget, this luxurious couple of days is a birthday gift from my daughter Petra. I've stayed in budget and mid range accommodation over the past couple of months, dragging my suitcase up and down stairs, hard beds, dodgy wifi, and I was looking forward to chilling out in the lap of luxury. The ... read more

Da Nang was for us more a transit stop, as we wanted to take the train from here to Hué. The ride along the coast according to many is worth it. Even though Da Nang is not the most attractive and exciting city, Da Nang will definitely stay in our mind for a couple of reasons. The first is that we drove for the first time a motorbike through this motorbike crowded country! We really felt like vietnamese ladies "crossing" around the city! The way this happend is as following, our hotel was located four kilometers from the city centre and we needed to go to the train station before it closes to buy a ticket to Hue, as it was already three o'clock we had to hurry up. Moreover, the rent of the bicycles were ... read more

Our trip to Hoi An started off eventfully, with the hostel forgetting to give back our passports. We only realised as we were at the bus stop so had to send a non-english speaking Vietnamese motorcyclist back to our hostel to pick them up! True to his word ( I think as couldnt understand him).he arrived back just in time for us to board the bus and get onto Hoi An. The bus itself was one of the hidden gems of Vietnam. Reclining beds, Wifi, AC and films on a big screen were just some of the amazing features of this mode of transport and it quickly became my favourite way of transport throughout Vietnam. The 4 hours passed so quickly so the next thing I know I am in my favourite place in Vietnam, Hoi ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City was toxic! The air was thick with the smell of two stroke and the humidity. We all struggled to breathe a bit.. However we had a good time, Lop showed us around and took us to Pho 2000. A noodle fast food restaurant where Bill Clinton had visited about 20 years ago. We started on the beer. After lunch we went back to the hotel for a nap. Everyone else went to the markets. We then got up to make ourselves look glam to go to the skybar in a really tall building overlooking the whole of the city. We went with Fran, Emma and Wendy. We aimed to get there for sunset. Unfortunately the smog was so bad you could barely see the sun!! But the cocktails were good.. Then we ... read more

The Dragon Air flight from Hong Kong glided onto the tarmac, grinding to a slow crawl and headed towards the terminal for de-boarding. Hangars line the tarmac, grey oval shaped, much like what I imagine airplane/port hangars to have looked at the turn of the 20th century. A brown military helicopter takes off against the lush green flat background of fields as we crawl towards the terminal. The sky is overcast and grey, and the air is heavy and damp with the morning's rain. I arrived as scheduled in Da Nang at 9 am -- but minus all my luggage. I remained hopeful although most people seemed to have found their bags, loaded them on a cart, and were headed to the exit line. Then, I just happened to notice my name on a triangular plaque ... read more

Got some pictures to share. As promised, less reading.... Most images from the town of Hoi An....an ancient (like 2000 years) maritime trading town about 20 mi south of DaNang. DaNang was developed by the French and later by the US in the run up to the conflict 50+ years ago due to its central location and is the major port here. HoiAn reminds one of a very old Balboa Island.... read more

Today marks one week into our trip. Back home, it's Remembrance Day and we think about how this particular occasion holds special significance in light of recent events. After breakfast at the hotel, we check out, board the bus and bide farewell to Hue. We are returning to the Danang area, but this time we are taking the Hai Van Pass through the Truong Son Mountains rather than the tunnel we took on the outbound trip. After negotiating some fairly steep climbs, we split off from the main highway. For the first time in Vietnam, we are briefly on a road with no traffic. Then we get into some serious climbing. The road is narrow, twisty and steep. Before the tunnel through the mountain was opened, this was the only road between South and North Vietnam ... read more
