After two weeks of travelling, mostly in cities, it was so refreshing to arrive in Hoi An, a small coastal city surrounded by lots of open countryside. The gateway was Da Nang, Vietnam's fourth largest city. From there it was only a 30 ish minutes taxi ride. Our base has been The Ancient Village Resort Hotel. Whilst the village might be ancient, the hotel was not. Just a couple of years old, set in on the edge of a village next to open rice fields, a couple of km out of Hoi An; it has been a real treat to stay here. Best bit was the free room upgrade. The distance out of the main centre has not been a problem since there are free, regular minibus shuttles throughout the day and evening and free bike ... read more

Relax on the beach, explore the old town, experience magnificent food, and even do a bit of shopping. Hoi An is a fantastic place to visit. The old city has plenty of history and culture, great food, and good quality hand made clothing and shoes. We did a cooking class at the Red Door cooking school that was fantastic, and included a market tour (make sure you do that) and a trip up river to the restaurant. Great eating places are everywhere, but Morning Glory was our pick. The food is fantastic. A number of the restaurants have upstairs balconies overlooking the river. Hire a bike and ride around the streets, or a scooter if you want to go further. Give yourself a few days to get shoes made. There are plenty of hotels or B&Bs ... read more

I like to take risks when I travel, but while I've enjoyed many incredible experiences, some of which I will never forget – the risk has also backfired from time to time. Here are some of my worst travelling experiences (so far). I’ve also included two of my best at the end, just to prove I do have a good time sometimes haha. The Worst The Three Day Delay in Marrakech Whilst the thought of a three day extension of a Moroccan holiday may seem like more of a positive than a negative, the real world repercussions were not so great. I had to miss three days of work and felt incredibly guilty for letting my understanding boss down, even though it was not my fault. The airline (not naming names here) eventually reimbursed the costs ... read more

As we wandered aimlessly and lost ourselves amongst the beautiful weathered french style yellow buildings, lanterns adorning every street and taking in the quaint river through the centre of town, we knew we were going to love Hoi An. Adding to the picture perfect town Hoi An is superbly positioned with vast countryside (namely rice fields) and a glorious sandy beach all within a 6km radius. Anyone looking to retire who is arguing with their spouse about whether to choose a country/beach/town retirement need look no further - you can have it all here! Hoi An old town is a strictly walking and cycling area, and the elimination of crazy vietnamese cars and scooters zipping about everywhere certainly adds to the romance and charm of the place. We arrived in Hoi An to the not so ... read more

When the taxi reached Hoa's road we hardly recognized the spot as the seafood restaurants have disappeared, lost to the developers. Hoa's old building is gone but he has built a new place right across the road. It has the same bar, the same beat to hell and back tables, the same lousy lend/ lease library and of course the same Hoa. When we got out of the cab Hoa was already heading towards us to take our bags and to put a cold one in our road weary fists. It's like coming back home. Hoa's wife Giao still runs the back of the house. Same menu and the same family style dinner every evening at 7 PM. Rooms are in 2 hotels at the top of the road. Hoa is starting to build rooms next ... read more

Bunkered down in my room in Hoi An waiting for the Super Typhoon Haiyan to hit our beautiful little town of Hoi An is an eerie and somewhat scary feeling, definitely the "calm before the storm". I can't help but feel lucky though as I am sure I will be ok and of course there are so many who will not be ok at all... I have what supplies I think I need, candles and matches for when the power goes out, some basic food items but if the power goes out I have just realized that I can't boil the water for my 2 minute noodles. I have never eaten them dry but there is always a first for everything. (a very small problem in the scheme of things though) I also have a few ... read more

The train journey to Da Nang was grim, an experience that we are both blocking from our memories! It was also 4 hrs late but we have been reassured that this is the norm. Da Nang was great, beautiful beach, beautiful skyline, lots of restaurants. We spent 2 days chilling out, swimming, building sand castles and wandering across lit up bridges. Other than 2 friendly American guys who lived there with their Vietnamese wives, we were the only westerners that we saw. This was ace. Previously the poverty and standard of living had been a shocking eye opener, and Da Nang brought the same, but it also gave us the opportunity to watch the local culture and way of life. During the day everything was fairly quiet, then at night the whole city hit the streets! ... read more
