Yesterday me and louise arrived into Hoi An after our 13 hour over night bus journey. It was not as comfy as the one had previously been on. We were on the back row each having a seat/bed, but there were 5 in a row, and typical me, I had the one that didn't lie flat and then it was the second one in that had the isle at the end of my feet, and a combination of no seat belt, sitting fairly up right and one the top bunk so to speak, everytime the bus braked, I slid forward. Not the best night sleep, but any bus journey wouldn't be complete without the bus river constantly beeping his horn..... even at 3am. Lovely man. So our hotel is great, were staying at the SunFlower Hotel. ... read more

I am writing yesterday's blog sat on a vietjet aeroplane somewhere between Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. I'd like to set the scene if I may... A boy of about 18months is sat on his mothers knee next to me. His hobbies include kicking me in the legs and waving around a wet wipe his mother used to wipe his nose making sure to rub it on my arm with every wave. Behind Eireann is a boy of about 5, his hobbies include kicking the back of Eireann's seat and shouting loudly. The elderly man in front's claim to fame is that his phone went off as we were taking off and he couldn't work out how to answer it. All in all it makes Ryanair look like a high class organisation with pure ... read more

This morning we woke at a reasonable hour and went down to the lobby for breakfast. The whole set up here is a bit weird. We were handed roughly torn order sheets with a pen and the breakfast options. We both picked fresh fruit and muesli.. It came sort of mushed together with yoghurt and a tonne of dragon fruit. Luckily a side of very sweet little pineapple was also included so I was happy. Today was the big day in Hoi an.. Today, we picked a tailor (there are hundreds) and went to get some clothes made. We were measured and and asked lots of questions. We picked things from books and drew our ideas in a book. We payed our deposit and were told to go back a mere 8hours later for a first ... read more

Long day of travelling starting at 5.00am, and arriving at Hoi An at 8.00pm (11.00pm Australian time). First time ever I walked into the airport and went straight through the check in, no queue and no waiting. Great way to start the trip. I arrived at Ho Chi Minh airport and it was really strange, firstly being somewhere completely new and secondly being on my own. I did a Robyn though, for those of you who don't know Robyn she is quite happy talking to strangers anywhere - supermarket queues, restaurants where ever, and so I made a few friends in the queues for customs and for booking the next flight. Who ever said travelling on your own was boring!!! Clarkee is a great travelling companion, no whinging and even made me buy chocolate at the ... read more

Hoi An is a beautiful old town with lots of history and relatively quiet and not as touristy as I expected. We started the morning off early with a great breakfast at the hotel by the river and then we headed off into town. First stop was to the tailors to organise a dress for me, where I had to jump on the back of a motorbike to be taken to the tailors for a measure up. That was great fun and I wanted her to keep riding and take me around the town but looks like I will have to wait till I get my own bike in Sapa. After the dress we found a shoe shop where the girl was a fantastic salesperson who cornered me and I ended up ordering a pair of ... read more

Spent most of the day travelling, leaving Hue at around eight am we arrived in Hoi An around two pm. The journey was broken with a stop off at a beach and an old army fort. Hoi An is the tailoring centre, you can also get shoes made here, very exciting. Spent the afternoon browsing the shops after lunch in a restaurant near the river which supports various charities in Vietnam. After visiting a few shops I went back to the first one and chose the design and material for a dress. You could get pretty much anything made. The guys got suits and shirts, the ladies mainly dresses. Second day we went on a bike ride around the lanes of the city and along the river eventually arriving at the beach. This gave an insight ... read more

It's the weekend! An overcast one here in Hoi An, but no rain in sight. Not that it will make much difference to me because I have little choice but to stay in my room on Saturday. I have kicked the little toe on my right foot hard against the bed leg and wouldn't be surprised if I have broken it. It has swelled up alarmingly, and hurts like hell. So, it's a quiet day in for me. I rest, read, blog and sleep, venturing out around 5.00pm to Solo Restaurant, just down the road, for an early dinner. I eat breakfast at the homestay, and then have one more meal for the day, usually late afternoon. This is a habit I started in India and will try to continue when I get home. On Sunday, ... read more

It took us 2 days of hair-raising motorbiking to reach our goal. The Hai Van pass - a 21km long stretch of tarmac that wraps around the green mountains north of Da Nang - had, until earlier today, been nothing more than a distant dream, conceived long ago in a dingy pub back in frosty England. Today, Sam, Sam, Harry and I found that our heavy expectations could not meet the spectacular experience of driving a motorbike on one of the world's most scenic roads. Even Top Gear could not do the road justice. It's the closest to vehicular paradise we may ever get. The adventure began to feel tangible when we arrived in our base in Hoi An - one of the few remaining ancient cities in Vietnam. Here, we found ourselves surrounded by a ... read more

Day 7 - Today we had a long drive to Hoi An going over the beautiful and scenic Hai Van Pass. On the way we stopped to see the China Beach, the Cham museum and Marble Mountain. Here some of the caves were used by the Viet Cong during as a hospital during the Vietnam War. I was also surprised to see a giant marble Budda inside and one on the hillside which looked so white apparently it had been painted to restore it. We walked up the steps to the Mountain but there is a life on the outside which really looks out of place and was for the very lazy tourist! We will spend three nights here in Hoi An which will be a welcome rest. Day 8 - We had the morning to ... read more
