Hue was the first capital of Vietnam and is considered a very important nationalist symbol. As a result, it was a strategic target in many wars and was briefly taken over by the North during the '68 Tet Offensive and retaken again by the Americans who ended up bombing the Citadel and destroying major parts of the Forbidden Purple City. Before the Americans bombed it, the French did their part too when they destroyed other parts of the Citadel while trying to re-takeover "Indochina" following their glorious "cheese eating surrender monkey" ways in WW II. Sorry, for using a recent Americanism. But how soon an ally becomes a non-ally and then an ally again eh. During WW II, the Americans gave large material support to Ho Chi Minh because he was the only one fighting the ... read more

The Cham museum in Da Nang was a must see after visiting the My Son ruins. If these artificats hadn't been moved here, they would most likely have been vandalized. Notice that all of the statutes in My Son were headless? Well, some of the heads are in the museum at Da Nang, but most have just disappeared. Probably destroyed long ago by the enemies of the Champa. ... read more

I got a sleeper on the night train to Da Nang. I found the carriage and the sleeper very easily. I had an upper bunk, as all the lower bunks were sold out. A little while after I was all settled in and had even managed to fit my backpack into the tiny crevice by the upper bunk (it helps that I'm intentionally travelling very light this time), 3 Vietnamese ladies and 2 young boys took over the lower two bunks. None spoke English, except for "Hello ... What is your name?" ... then an older gentleman came with his son to take the remaining upper bunk - and has a 24 pack of imported beer with him. He also had some kind of speech impediment, where he couldn't say much but grunt and gesture. umm ... read more

In the town of A Luoi a group of American Vets relax in a small dining room. The table before them is cluttered with bottles of local brew and half filled ashtrays. They speak earnestly of days when they were soldiers and privy to the fearlessness of youth. The staff eats their evening meal at a table behind the men listening in on the American accented English. Four miles west of the hotel stands a detached Annanite mastiff called Dong Ap Bia. At 937 meters in height it looms over this part of the Au Shau Valley. The local Montagnard tribesmen know it as ‘The Mountain Of The Crouching Beast‘. After May of 1969 the American media renamed it ‘Hamburger Hill’. Karen and I were sitting in Hoa’s one morning minding our own business for a ... read more

She arrives at the beach every morning at 5:30 sharp. She’s bowlegged. Probably has been since childhood. The long bones permanently knitted into empty parentheses. Her limp is substantial. She uses a cane to paddle herself across the soft sand. It’s one of those telescoping brushed aluminum things with a black foam grip. The bright modern design contrasts sharply with the rest of her attire. An ancient dirty-yellow cone hat that used to be white. Dark drab purple pajamas with the pants cut off just below the knees. Her beach outfit. As she moves across the sand her free hand is extended outward like a tightrope walker’s. In it she clutches a small plastic shopping bag containing a change of clothing and a towel. Reaching her customary spot she drops the cane and plants herself with ... read more

So after our mucking round at the airport we walked outside grabbed a taxi and headed to Hoa's place. We hadn't been able to get hold of anyone there so we were winging it. Rocked on up to this gravel street and started asking where Hoa was and if anyone new him. With some nodding of the head and repeating of the name "Hoa Hoa Hoa" and a pretty obvious pointing down the street we found a little slice of heaven. This little Vietnmese man came bounding out the door "Hello Hello im Hoa come in for a feed sit down sit down" and that was our room booked, then we rested for a while and went and inspected the beach which was 60m from our room which was costing a reasonable $7 a night. ... read more

Hello all . . . It's been a whole week since last I wrote. Our very limited Vietnamese vocabulary continues to slowly grow. I think we are up to 20-some words and numbers. Things have been looking promising in the languard department when margot and I finally (really it was Margot, for my own entertainment) was understood when she told the cab driver "95 Quang Trung" which is our address in vietnamese. It's taken over 2 weeks for the cab drivers to finally understand us and even this time, he hesitated and almost had us write it down (the preferred method of communicating with cab drivers here). And it certainly did get a big smile out of him - the vietnamese are very surprised and happy when they realise that we are in fact actually trying ... read more

Hello fellow blog-followers! Margot and I had a very successful morning! After observing a total knee surgery yesterday. We were able to teach/commence acute PT on 2 patients after their total knees today - Margot really saved the day as she put her expertise to work in working with the patients and educating the therapists on acute orthopedic PT therapeutic techniques. This is the first (to our knowledge) that the PT department has seen or been exposed to acute PT care so soon and functional after a total knee replacement and the patients did really well. Then, we were smart enough to run up to the surgery floor and catch the ortho surgeon and the american ortho surgeons between surguries to give them updates and recommendations to clarify the orders that are generated for the PT ... read more

As it would be - lots have happened since my last entry. Let's see - margot and i have been at the hospital for over a week now. She has presented 2 presentations, I present my 2nd tomorrow. We have been getting along really well with the other therapists in their main PT gym (with neuro and ortho patients). Saturday we spent the day sight seeing - luckily after 2 days of solid-flooding rain (which does not stop the cars, motorbikes or bicyclists) we had no rain on our sight seeing day which included a guided tour of Marble Mountain, Monkey mountain (with lunch at the top and some trekking) and the pagoda with the huge 72 meter tall lady buddha. Saturday night we stayed at Hoa's place, a well known off the beaten track guest ... read more
