PHYSIOTHERAPIST, ALISON FROM AUSTRALIA LAYS THE FOUNDATIONS The Lifestart Foundation Free Disability Community Centre is now in full swing with patients benefiting from treatment each day. This year we have also commenced two outreach projects which also work with people with very complex disabilities. Both outreach projects are live in centers and through this work we will have the potential to reach a further 130 people in need. The patients live in these centers because they are from very poor families and their families are unable to support them or because they do not have families and were previously homeless. These centers are now their home for the rest of their lives. Both centers are poorly equipped on every level however they are provided with some where to sleep and some food. I have asked our ... read more

So yesterday we woke up feeling quite rough as the night I said we were planning a quiet one ended in being a huge one! All we wanted to do was go out for a couple òf drinks and a few games of pool and we ended up going to somewhere down a back alley called the sun bar where it is really small but there is a big pool table. However as soon as we got in there I knew it wasnt going to be a quiet night as three guys we had met in Nha Trang were in there having a drink already so it ended up being a very messy night as usual!! In the morning I went down for Breakfast while Sean slept soundly asleep and got speaking to a girl who ... read more

Hopped off the return mini-bus ride from Halong Bay to Hanoi, had dinner and chilled out for a couple of hours, and then back on the road again, this time a longer 14h train ride from Hanoi to the Central Vietnam beach city of Danang. Heading southwards on the train from Hanoi, most tourists' first port of call would be the ancient capital of Hue, but I'd been there my first visit to Vietnam in 2005, so this time I decided to instead check out Danang which I'd missed back then. The Reunification Express passes through some picturesque Vietnamese coastal scenery, with the tracks being flanked by the Central Highlands on the West, and the Gulf of Tonkin on the East, and made for some great views. On the ride itself I met a middle-aged Russian ... read more

just got back from our 7 day getaway. we stayed 3 nights in Danang. we stayed at the Intercontinental, and all ii can say is this place is swank. it's a six-star beach resort. many consider it the best hotel/resort in southeast asia. this place is NICE. there are people just hanging around, just waiting for you to ask for something. i imagine this is where the rich and famous go. i dont think i can do five star hotels anymore after this. the room was huge. i think it's about the same size as my house. seriously. i think 10 cubicales at work could fit in the balcony alone. this place was beautiful. flowers everywhere. they gave us a bottle of wine, chocolates, and other gifts when we arrived, and they gave ryan a little ... read more

Well we went into the sea last night for a swim and in the moonlight which is quite magical and the sea was so warm. So when we woke up this morning after a bottle of rum it seemed like we had woken up on the beach as the bed was full of sand - not a good feeling. So up and atam this morning we had a discussion on what shall we do today! Read, swim or swim, read, decisions decisions decisions. Anyway whilst deciding what to do we thought lets go for an early morning swim and have a board meeting to make the decision with Mike in the chair!! After the unanimous vote we decided it should be read and then swim. It started raining after lunch for about 1/2 hour so this was ... read more

The photos in this blog were taken on my two trips to Đà Nẵng city in February 2011 and August 2012. Since my first trip to Đà Nẵng in December 1997 up to date, I have made more than 10 trips to the city. Sometimes I traveled to Đà Nẵng on business, other times I traveled for fun or transit on the way back to Hanoi from Pleiku. Đà Nẵng is the third largest city in Vietnam after Hồ Chí Minh City and Hanoi. It is also the largest city in the Central Vietnam. Possibly speaking, Đà Nẵng is right in the middle of Vietnam on the air route as it takes one hour for the flight from either Hanoi or Hồ Chí Minh city. On my different trips to Đà Nẵng I also visited other ... read more

Welcome to Hard Seat Overnight Train from Nha Trang to Da Nang, duration 14 hours. This I can truly say was one of the worst trips I've ever done in my life. Some would say character building, I would say just a pain in the arse in more ways than one... With Jazza and my motorbikes put on the train the day before all we had was our backpacks and tickets ready for the big train adventure. Getting to the train station 30mins before departing Anna, Jazza and I stocked up on baguettes and beers to have on the train. Before getting on the train I thought to myself this was going to be an experience. The carriages looked like they were built before the war and meant to house animals with with mesh covering the ... read more

I meet Mr. Tommy this morning in the hotel lobby. He sees me get out of the elevator and gives me his best smile. When I ask him what is making him so happy, he tells me it’s Lang day today. I respond that it’s been Lang day every day so far as I feel very fortunate on this wonderful adventure. What he meant instead is that the word “lang” in Vietnamese means tomb. Scattered across the scenic countryside to the south of Hue, the tombs of the Nguyen Emperors are among the area’s most compelling attractions. Although 13 rulers sat on the imperial throne between 1802 and 1945, only seven were given the honor of their own mausoleum, or lang, as the others died during exile or in disgrace. All seven tombs have features of ... read more

Sit back on a sleeper bus straight out of Harry Potter (crazy driver and near-misses included) and relax...for a fifteen minute ride to the side of the highway where I'm dropped off on the outskirts of Danang. It's the midpoint of Vietnam. I have been here for 15 days and I only have 13 left. Danang is ugly. Hate to say it, but it is. Industrial and pushing for development, it's hard to decide if the greyness comes from cloud cover or pollution. Probably a mixture of both. Riding on a motorbike from the highway into the city is like crossing a desert of half finished buildings, gaping structures through which sand flies to sting the eyes of my driver. But he swerves with style. Very few Western faces show themselves in the streets, the city ... read more

As we set off on the minibus to get the train from Da Nang to our new destination in Vietnam, Nha Trang, Phat gave us a little low down on the place we would be visiting. The accent thing was great here, as we would apparently be going to see some 'beautiful bitches'! And then on asking if we would have the same 'wailing' on the train he said with a cheeky grin, 'maybe some complimentary music!' The train was the same Reunification Express we had been on for the overnight trip, so 4 berth cabins again, even though this was a day train. Again we had a lady booked into one of our cabins so Phat began a lengthy bit of negotiation, on Jodie's behalf this time. She took a bit of persuading and insisted ... read more
