Today I woke up in a beautiful hotel. I was only able to enjoy it for a few sleeping hours, but I felt classy staying there! Made me feel better after the plane ride - let's just say that a-holes exist in every part of the planet. I think that's an understated hard part of travel - you are constantly putting yourself out there for public inspection. Rising above can be difficult. Ah well, I'm on an adventure! Today we went to My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO site outside of Da Nong. The site was created by the Champa people over a thousand years ago. The French looted the place, Americans bombed it, and yet much if it still exists in its original form. In fact, in places where rehab is present are crumbling much more ... read more

Loyal readers will have noticed there’s one person in our party who’s been a little low-key in our recent adventures. Alas, Wendy’s been a little under the weather and although still game, has found the going a bit tough over the last few days. Yesterday, Wendy decided to take a little time to chill out and catch up on some sleep. Don't worry, she’s on the road to recovery and raring to go as we travel to Hue to look at this iconic city and its historic citadel. We’re going to learn a little more about one of the most infamous battles of the American War and some of the distinctly unsavoury stuff that was done in the name of so-called peace. Brace yourself; it’s going to be a bumpy ride in more ways than one! ... read more

Arrived here 28 March for a few days R'n'R for Lyn after10 straight days of meetings, fairs and agent visits including weekends and night events. She was ready for a break. We hadn't been to Da Nang so didn't know what to expect except that we knew there was a long coastline of sandy beaches and we had booked a hotel on the beach, or across the road from the beach. Sure enough, there was the beach stretching for kilometres and our hotel was right there. All the hotel staff have name tags with an English name on it - Martin, Lucy, Annette, Jonathon and so on. Our young guy at reception was Elvis but when I burst into the opening lines of "Heartbreak Hotel" on arrival he had no idea! I think he thought he ... read more

Me revoilà...

My hostel was on the far northern end of China Beach (yes, that China Beach but My Khe in Vietnamese), near the Lady Buddha statue, where the fishermen still matter. I shared my run on the beach with a fair amount of garbage and defunct nets in the dark sand and a ubiquitous rotting fish smell. A half mile toward the scores of lounge chairs on the better, lighter swath of sand, and I've never seen so many pickup soccer games in the early evening when the sand cools. I turned around at the skyscraper hotels and resorts and lounge chairs that you can only use if you buy a drink, saving that stretch for the next morning. This was a day after getting mild food poisoning (the fish bowl photo in my last entry) in ... read more

Da Nang is almost like a coastal Spanish resort. We felt Da Nang was cleaner than other places in Vietnam until we encountered at least 7 rats on our way home. You’re kidding yourself if you come to Vietnam expecting any level of hygiene, unless you’re forking out a lot of money on an isolated resort. Nethertheless, we stayed at Touch Homestay owned by the lovely ‘Jenny’ Chang and her family who really looked after us. After a day of getting painfully scorched in the 100% UV sun, we met up with Jamie and Emily who we’d previously met on the sleeper bus and had dinner/drinks with them. We’re all looking like lobsters; Vietnam sun 1, us English backpackers, 0! They’re great company which is fortunate as nice bars and restaurants are a rarity here. Mind, ... read more

Woolly says – It hadn’t taken us long to reach Da Nang and as our taxi from the airport drove us through the streets it seemed an awful lot quieter than we had expected. Da Nang is on the coast of the South China Sea at the mouth of the Han River and is one of Vietnam's most important port cities. I think we had all imagined it to be a seaside town similar to Aberystwyth but without the Victorian buildings, it was very modern with absolutely nothing to look at and more importantly very few places to eat. Our first two outings for food had resulted in us asking for the food we wanted, pointing at pictures, shaking our heads a lot to the question of beef and then keeping paws crossed we got something. ... read more

We were supposed to depart Gold Coast on Wednesday evening but due to technical difficulties we were delayed until Thursday morning. Air Asia accommodated everyone in a 5 star hotel, Mantra in Kingscliffe which was over the border in NSW therefore one hour ahead of Qld. 5.15am pickup and back to Gold Coast where we left on time. Air Asia provided a nice meal for free as hardly anyone had ordered a meal on the original flight thinking it was an overnight flight. Arrived in Kuala Lumpur about 18 hours late to find a majority of passengers had missed their connecting flights. Air Asia accommodated some in Tune Hotel at airport but we were lucky enough to be relocated to a 5 star Nilia Golf Resort, very nice indeed including a beautiful buffet dinner. There were ... read more

Sunday 28th January 2018 Today we leave the lovely Earth Villa and head not far away to the Camellia Homestay to settle in for our last 5 days in Vietnam. Firstly tho it’s time to indulge ourselves with breakfast to set us up for the day. John opted for the Vietnamese special; Pho, which Is a noodle soup followed by omellete and a baguette. Sarah went for cornflakes and then the baguette with fried eggs all with tea and Vietnamese coffee. Breakfasted we returned to our room to pack and then check out. Just after 10:30am we hoisted on our backpacks and looking the part wandered off down the street. John being an excellent map reader soon found the homestay a few streets away. We were again given a lovely welcome by the owners and their ... read more
