We're told time after time to watch out for the Siem Reap to Bangkok bus scam as if it's an actual predator that walks the streets. But what the books and the people neglact to tell you is how you should go to Bangkok and what bus company you should take. For this reason we had to choose a bus and hope it would not be a bus that stops every hour and a half to make you get off the bus and eat at a restaurant that would give the bus driver "kick backs" for bringing a bus full of people. Well you can probably guess that our guess was not the correct one and yet again we were on a run down bus trying to pass the day with the "20 questions game". To ... read more

A few weeks ago, Sharon, (our daughter) wrote a travel blog naming her perfect beaches around the world and asked for suggestions of others. We found our perfect beach on Ko Samet. Ao Nuan. Picture this! White powdery sand in a crescent shape bay that gently shelves into an aqua marine warm sea that's backed by dense jungle vegetation. Either side of the bay, rocks become coral as they reach beneath the water. Teems of colourful fish swim all around. When you tire of admiring the coral and fish, lay in the dappled shade of a palm tree and watch the huge colourful butterflies fluttering about. Eat lunch in the rustic little bar that’s hidden discreetly in the trees whilst watching the waves gently lap the shore. Perfect? We thought so. One of the downsides to ... read more

After a five hour taxi, bus and boat ride we were on Ko Samet. Shortly before we had arrived there'd been a heavy downpour and the 'roads' had turned to mud. We trekked to the village and found a vacant room at Naga Bungalows. After lunch we had a much needed dip in the sea, there was no sun but it was still very warm. The sea felt like getting into a warm bath! That night we came across a fire show at Ploy Bar, now we really knew we were back in Thailand. Sleep evaded us that night as our bungalow was so hot.The outside bathroom made life a bit difficult too. Every time we opened the door to go the Mossies got in! Next day we checked out some other bungalows at White Sands ... read more

The worst thing so far about travelling is the claustrophobia of travelling in minibuses, which seems to happen all the time! When travelling between Ko Chang and Ko Samet we opted for the bus that would pick us up from our pad, and take us directly there! Of course this was a ten seater minibus! After leaving Ko Chang, we were told to change to a smaller bus......but with the same amount of people (10 of us!). The funny thing is they tried squeezing another 2 people on board, and then yelling in Thai at people who protested at being crammed in this bus! Luggage was moved on top of the bus (which got thoroughly soaked on the 3/4 hour journey apart from my bag - id been smart enough to cover mine with the ... read more

After packing my whole life into a backpack and saying goodbye to loved family and friends it was time to walk through customs at the airport! Yay we were finally on our way after months of reorganizing our lives and planning the big trip OS. All we have to do now is pass customs and we can relax……..but wait a second…..I have a bottle of Moe Chandon Champaign in my carry on luggage! Bugger, I forgot about the new airport rules prohibiting bottles of liquid on a plane more of than 200 ml. After much argument with customs officials we could do nothing but watch them dump the whole bottle in the bin, it was totally shattering. The guy next to us lost a bottle of expensive whisky; I think I saw tears in his ... read more

Today I headed for the island of Ko Samet with John and Abbie, it would be their last glimpse of paradise before heading back to England. Well dependant upon what your feelings are towards paradise anyway, your either a Hunstanton person or your not. Although to be fair a bag of Hunstanton fish and chips would go down a treat right now. Instead I've settled for a bag of green pea crisps...NICE! We took a taxi to the fishing port of Ban Phe and then took a speed boat across to the island, it took no more than about 3 hours to reach from Bangkok. The island is about 6km across and is well tuned for tourism with it's bungalow style accomodation throughout the island, a wide selection of bars and resturants, and there are ... read more

Good Bye Thailand. We spent the last few days (and nights) in Koh Samet soaking up what would be the last days of beach life. Kept the days busy as usually with the books, sun, swim, food, and a couple of beers. I even was able to reteach myself Cribbage, and Jaika and I had a few go’s at it. I did have one problem. One night after a few too many drinks, we called it an evening, and made our way back to the room. The next morning I realize that I am missing my camera Tripod; this is a Gorilla Pod, possible the coolest thing for $20 one can get. It has 3 octopus like that can be attached to anything. As a solo traveler its one of my most used tools - I ... read more

Island life and The Bucket. After the plane ride, the taxi haggle, the ride, the boat haggle, and finally the boat ride, we reached the beach/port of Koh Samet, an island 3 hours east of Bangkok. This was a new island for me so, so I was eager to check it out, comparing it with the previous of islands Thailand has shared with me. I booked something in advance, probably one of the nicer places on the island, on a very chill, yet entertaining beach. The place is the most expensive I have spent in Thailand, but as it was Jaika’s first trip, and my first beach treat this year, so I felt a little splurge wouldn’t be bad. It was about $45. For Thailand that’s a lot. I think about what $45 will get you ... read more
