goodness gracious. it feels like i've been holding my breath for about a week, and have finally taken a huge deep belly full of good sunny air. i guess i didn't know what "concrete jungle" really meant until i spent a weekend in bangkok. it's a bit like a thriving post-apocalyptic community crafted from rebar, concrete, tropical foliage, and ancient ruins. unreal. it's huge. sprawling. no straight lines, no "center" of town. more like a tightly packed conglomeration of independent neighborhoods locked in a fierce competition to see who can create the most car fumes, sell the most liquor (literally by the bucket), and play the loudest music. it's festive, but a bit overwhelming. i had planned to wait there for miss ladye, who arrives on wednesday, but realized at about 3am last night that ... read more

If you've ever been to Thailand you know what I'm talking about. If you have not been, then let's engage in a little thought experiment: Imagine you're a typical backpacker. You either quit your job or graduated from school and you have decided to up and leave wherever you're coming from to "travel the world." Well you realize that you can't see the whole world, so you figure out your options. You've saved enough from work/graduation money to either (1) backpack around Europe for a month and then return home to work again or (2) backpack around Southeast Asia for 6 months to a year before you have to return. Thinking like a backpacker, naturally, you want to be gone as long as possible while experiencing as much as possible. Europe is nice, but it's expensive ... read more

Since it's songkran, water festival, Thai New Year, Finally all members in family can gather together for a day trip.. Dad - Mom - Pat (my younger sister) - bambi (2 months chihuahua) and me.. We didn't really plan where to go at first we was about to go to pattaya but there were so many cars, many people, since we tried to avoid "the water war", we decided to drive further to Rayong province and cross to Samet Island.. so bad that Simon, P'Koong and Bilbo are back to Koenkane for holidays.. Well a day trip is enough.. since it's hard to find accommodation for the long holiday.. it's nice to visit samet again.. ■■ ■■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ ● ● ■■■ ■■ ◎ ◎ ■■ ■■■ T ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■■■■■■■■ □■■■■■■■■■□ ... read more

No more sunshine!!! Well, we’re nearly there. Our final country, our final journey, and now our final blog!! After a long but uneventful overnight train journey from Vientiane to Bangkok, immediately followed by a posh mini-bus from Bangkok to Ko Samet, we were looking forward to our final 2 weeks of globe-trotting, which would be spent topping up our tans, and getting well and truly sickened by Thai food! We weren’t immediately impressed by Ko Samet. After rave reviews by friends and travelers we were expecting another postcard perfect desert island (ala Ko Lipe), when we arrived off the ferry I immediately looked for my mark of a quality island - tropical fish swimming in crystal clear-blue water underneath the pier, only to be surprised at the reality of plastic bags and oily grey water, ... read more

So we have been in Koh Samet for the last couple of days. We met my friend Vicki from school on wednesday as she has been here for 2 months already. She took us to the island, it is about a 3 hr drive frmo bangkok then an hours ferry. The island was great, we chilled on the beach for 2 days, the weather was lovely. We stayed in a little bungalow for 6 pound a night just off of the beach. We left there yesterday to come back to Bangkok as we fly to sydney tommorrow. Thats all for now.

Our current location is KO Chang but before we go into this area we have a last update on Ko Samet. We did the last blog thinking the next day we would be making our way to Ko Chang however we didn’t count on the dreaded lurgy (suspected food poisoning) changing the plan. I was vomiting all that night then spent the next day either comatose or on the toilet. Victoria then proceeded to do exactly the same thing the next night so all in all we spent another 3 days on the island just dying and lying. Finally left for Trat, our ultimate destination Ko Chang. We had to do this via Chanthaburi which is a 2 hour bus ride to the station (on the usual air con government bus). As previous times we were ... read more

We left Pattaya feeling hungover and full of cold for the 3 hour, no air-con trip to Ban Phe which is pretty much just a harbour town. Booked our ticket for 60 baht hour long ferry crossing which is under a pound and jumped aboard (oh forgot to say we were having lunch just prior to this in an open fronted restaraunt when I said to Dave "there is an elephant walking towards us") he walked right up and poked his head in too, brilliant!!! jumped aboard the boat and it was pretty packed with school kids going back to the island from their main land classes and backpackers. Arrived not really noing were to go but got a 10 minute Joe Mangle pick up to Ao Tien (Ao meaning bay). Now you couldnt really classify ... read more
