Well here I am at 6.30pm thinking - why did we book a midnight train? Mike is fast asleep by the pool - need to keep bashing him due to his snoring! Great company he is when I am bored! We sent some things home today Gordon Bennett it is expensive even when you send things home by slow mail! Think I am going to have to rethink this buying things as do not want to carry them and also expensive to send by slow mail. I emailed the people who are on the volunteering with us in Vietnam - they sound nice. They are volunteering for 4 weeks where we are only doing it for 3 weeks. Sat by the pool as I am writing this with pidgeons getting in the swimming pool - not ... read more

KUALA LUMPUR COLONIAL QUARTER & TRAIN TO SINGAPORE. Wednesday 29 February, 2012. D awoke early and went to fill the car up with petrol before the Europecar guy came to collect it at 10.30 am. We then showered and went down to the restaurant for breakfast. The first breakfast we have had included in the price - we have been having Tesco Value Butter Cookies for breakfast up until then. D ate like a horse. M had her FIRST cup of tea since leaving England last Tuesday! The Europecar guy arrived on the nose at 10.30. All was well except that D got landed with a £20 extra charge for AGE INSURANCE because he is over 65. Cheek - you normally get things cheaper if you are old!! We now had just 1 hour and a ... read more

Tuesday, 22nd February 2012 I heaved a sigh of happiness when I boarded my 8.30pm flight back to Singapore. I think even the air steward noticed those smiles painted on my face. "Good evening sir, you looked very happy tonight," lamented the cheerful steward. "Of course, I'm finally going home tonight lah," I've every reason to be happy about. "Me too, I'm heading home after this shift," echoed the steward. "Yeah, a long day for everybody yah," I smiled again before heading into the cabin to locate my seat. The flight back to Singapore was packed with corporate business travellers heading home. While waiting for my flight, I overheard a fellow passenger talking to his kids to find out if they already had their dinner. He urged them not to wait for him as the flight ... read more

Monday, 20th February 2012 We were up and about by 6.20am this morning. I did had a good night's rest at the comfort of my own room which commanded a nice view of the swimming pool and the Petronas Twin Towers. After breakfast at the hotel, we were ready to set off to our office, about 15 minutes walk from where we stayed. The early morning walk wasn't too inspiring given the heavy traffic condition and the slight drizzle that greeted us along the way. It was just after 8.30am when K and I reached our office located right next to KLCC. In the morning, it was business as usual for me even though my boss was involved in a much heated tangle with one of the managers. Lunch was an Indonesian affair as L and ... read more

KL by night

Sunday, 19th February 2012 It was just last week when I received an email from my superior that I was needed at our KL office. My first reaction was, "Ok" since KL was just a short ride away and I haven't had a chance to meet up with our team over there. On Sunday evening, I decided to take an evening flight to the Malaysian capital to prepare myself for a good night's rest before heading to our office on Monday morning. The Singapore Airlines 45 minutes flight to Kuala Lumpur cost a whopping SGD429 for a return. For such a short duration, I wouldn't contemplate flying a full service carrier for leisure. Basically, a serving of complimentary glass of orange juice separated between the likes of budget carriers and Singapore Airlines, at a hefty price ... read more

Final 2 days in Kuala Lumpur - visited the BATU caves via a tour operator - it turned out this included a visit to a Pewter factory (very interesting) and a BATIK factory (where the staff looked bored and we were even more bored). The caves are entered via a steep staircase (i think it has 280 steps) where monkeys sit on the steps looking for food from tourists/devotees, the guide warned us not to feed the monkeys as you were likley to be mobbed when they found out food was being handed out, he also warned against having loose dangling items like cameras etc as these had been grabbed by the monkeys - overall he put the fear of god into us and convinced everyone the monkeys were the equivelent of Fagins thieving gang who ... read more

Spent the final day in Christchurch - the city centre is devastated by the earthquake but they are working on the clearing up and trying to get the city re-energised - there is a very inventive shopping centre using units similar to ship containers (but look far better) - you can't help thinking that it maybe better to relocate rather than rebuild. The museum at the Botanical Garden was open and is well worth the visit. Ended the time at New Zealand with an evening meal at the hotel. The flight to Kuala Lumpur was hard - it seemed to go on for ever. At the Christchurch airport we were told our main case was too heavy so we had to re-arrange the luggage - the items booked in were transferred direct to Kuala Lumpur so ... read more

A trip up the KL tower went well - there was good views with relatively clear weather - another surprise - pay child prices as we are now 'older' citizens. There are pictures at each viewing point to highlight the key areas/sights but they also show the speed of development in this city - tower blocks are being built in every space. We tried to go up the Petronas Tower but it is closed until December. As part of the sightseeing in KL we went to Petaling street to see what bargains could be had - decided we are not good hagglers - it seemed too much trouble and with no reference point we ended up buying nothing. While the city tries to give some sembalance of standards it seems to be very much a veneer ... read more

A wonderful start to the holiday - apart from the 'Comfort Inn' at Heathrow - not so comfortable! We also made the mistake of going for value rather than quality when it came to an evening meal - we went to the local pub (Great Western) and we had 2 of the most horrendous meals served to the public - but they were cheap! As the old saying goes - you can take the boy out of Yorkshire etc etc. The Malaysian Air flight from Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur took off on time and the seats were great - lots of leg room and the ability to get some sleep albeit very limited. Good food served and an excellent entertainment centre to pass the time away. We met a Kiwi couple who advised us of the ... read more
