After a markedly seamless journey we arrived in Kuala Lumpur at around 6.00pm last night. We checked in to our cleanish, well located hotel in Chinatown and delivered ourselves to a favourite chinese eating spot in the night markets for 2 long necks of Tiger beer, fried rice, Gai lan, satays and noodles. On waking this morning we returned to our favourite Restoran Yousef for the best Roti Cannai (wafer thin grilled flat bread filled with different delicacies, and Teh Tahrik (strong hot foaming tea made with lashings of condensed milk). After this we attemped to take a walk to little India but as usual kuala lumpur was not willing to grant us the right to find our own way on foot. It is so convoluted and complicated in layout as to defy belief. So, with ... read more

I started the day off with a trip to Little India with Peter, Alex and Maritz, followed by a trip to the Mosque, where we were given gowns and a head scarf to wear allowing us the look around the grounds, after relaxing at a cafe for lunch in central market we headed back to the hostel to relax while the day was at its hottest. During the early evening heavy rain we jumped on the monorail and mrt to the twin towers and shopping centres where we ate at a Malay style restaurant. I still can't believe the shops they have! Wish I didn't have to carry everything! Then I would spend so much money here shopping. There is even a theme park in one of the shopping centres. After checking out the cinemas we ... read more

Good morning KL! I started the discovery of South East Asia with a trip to Chinatown with Mia, a very colourful and vibrant part of the city it was interesting to walk around the market looking at all the knock off designer clothes, watches, bags and just about everything else that could interest people to buy, all 'Chinatown real'. We then spent an hour getting lost while looking for a bus to take us on a tour of the city but we found it! And headed to the national museum which was a fasinating place learning how young Malaysia and KL are. Taking in the palace, government buildings, temples and KL's very own twin towers we stopped for a Malaysian lunch and a look at the shops (they have better shopping than Auckland!) they even have ... read more

KL, the place to be! People and more people, cars and more cars. And in some paces, orderliness. You easily find yourself in some glossy places and turn the corner you feel you are right in the centre of somewhere you don't want to be at. Taxi drivers tend to be ok, may be just our lucky day. They rarely chat to you, not sure why. They do seem to know the ways well, cutting down/up the hill and crossing unidentifiable lanes. Use pre-paid tickets where you can. Food, KL is heaven. Go where the locals go. You may not like all the sight (or cleanliness), but trust me if the locals enjoy it, it's good. OK, perhaps ask some questions about what is the food exactly. Hawker stalls can be better quality than those from ... read more

After all our shopping around in Hongkong it’s time to keep moving… Our flight to Penang went smooth and our driver was waiting at the airport for us! Finally at 12 o’clock at night we arrived in our hostel! The heat was incredible! So room with aircon! The next day we were so happy that we had a beach and all excited to go for a dive! But no… No swimming in the sea, cause there were heaps of jellyfish! So we ended up spending a few days at the swimming pool of some luxury resort! Not really much to do in Penang we decided to hit the road and to go to a little surfers paradise! Our first bus in Malaysia was an experience! So clean and so much room!!! No people in the aisle, ... read more

Kuala Lumpur! We arrived in Kuala Lumpur from Phuket on our Air Asia flight about 2 hours behind schedule, which put us on the tarmak around 1:30am. As Air Asia is a 'discount' carrier, we landed at the 'discount' terminal, which means we got to literally walk about 2km across the tarmack of the airport to get to immigration and our luggage. Once we're all settled and through customs, the bus to the city is easily availalbe for about 8 'Malaysians'. We don't know what 'Malaysians' are called yet! We found out later they are called Ringgets ;) the bus ride is about 75 km, or 1.5 hours driving on the great and plentiful highways in KL. The bus drops us off at KL Sentral, which is supposed to be the main 'downtown' station for the ... read more

My last day in Singapore today, and my bus wasn't leaving till 6.30pm so I was going to do my last bit os sightseeing this morning. I was up early and headed to the gym after breakfast. I had lost a lot of weight in India due to lack of 'safe' food to eat that wasn't cookie or snack based and because Singapore was food orientated I didn't want to stack it back on. I took the MRT to Marina bay. On Saturday night I had seen a hotel that Dai had told me about made of three towers with a boat sitting astride the roof of all three. At night with all of the twinkly lights of Singapore shining it look impressive and I wanted to see it up close. Marina bay was a bit ... read more

Hello there. It's been a while hasn't it. I hope the suspense hasn't been killing you? Unbelievably we are almost at the end of our first two months which has, all to predictably, flown by with impolite haste. I'm not sure how I can already be a third of the way through the trip? What can I tell you about what we've been doing since I last wrote to you then? Well, from Koh Tao we headed over to the west coast on a bus, briefly stopping in Krabi before catching a boat to Railee Beach for a couple of days. Railee was very impressive, only accessible by boat, you complete the final few yards of your journey by wading through the sea with your bags on your back. It's surrounded by massive, dramatic cliffs and ... read more

Beim Betreten der Garküche werde ... read more

The bus journey went smoothly, that is one thing, we have felt a lot safer on public transport since being here; however, when we arrived in KL we were greeted with lots of traffic and rain and it felt just like home! After arriving quite late and then traipsing through a busy market with the big bags and getting irritated by people not moving for us we found a hostel; it was a dive but for the price what did we expect and besides we were knackered. That night we just got food and then went to bed. The next day we headed to the bird park, apparently the biggest open air bird aviary in the world and we weren’t disappointed – it was great to see all the birds and they seemed to have a ... read more
