Having left rainy Thailand behind we travelled to Kuala Lumpur by air. Laura was still not feeling her best but braved the flight over. From the airport we took the bus to busy China town - sadly still in the rain. We did not have accomodation booked but knew this area to house most of the budget hotels / hostels. The street we ended up staying on converted into a bustling market at night, complete with a sound system that raged until about midnight. Hungry I ventured out into the streets of China town in search of some authentic cuisine. We knew Malaysia to be more of a melting pot than further north in SE asia, the more Muslim and Chinese influence was also apparent in the food. China town was typical of all the China ... read more

After a long 13 hour flight we stepped off the plane into the 32 degree heat of Kuala Lumpur. It was 5pm but our bodies and minds were still on UK time so to us it was 10am. The curry with dried anchovies we were served for lunch at 2pm (or about 7am to us) did nothing to help our confusion. We collected our bags and found our taxi. Our driver told us it would take an hour to reach the city as we had arrived during the madness of rush hour. As we approached the city we got our first glimpse of the Petronas Towers. We knew our hotel was close to the towers so we were expecting to arrive sooner than expected. Unfortunately once we were in the centre it took us 30 minutes ... read more

Day 35 We were leaving Thailand today in order to head into Malaysia but Brett still wasn't feeling very well so we weren't expecting a fun journey. Also in the high season you can travel straight from Lipe to Langgkawi in a couple of hours but with it being the low season this wasn't possible and we had to head back towards Pakbara first and as we had only booked the first boat we knew it was going to be a long day! The journey began with our hotel kindly giving us a lift across the island by a bike and side car (we have no idea how many forms of transport we have used on this trip!) followed by a speed boat back to Pakbara. Simple start. As soon as we arrvied we had a ... read more

From Ao Nang we crammed into a minivan full of people to Hat Yai and a few hours later we were off loaded to wait for our bus to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We had a couple hours to spare so we walked down the street from the bus station, went to a mall, and then grabbed some groceries. By groceries, I mean the usual: pocky, chips, and some ultra healthy chocolate oat milk and corn milk for an ounce of nutrients. Bus trip days are always the worst for our diet, the further the distance - the worse it gets! We always buy bread and peanut butter for a quick sandwich and a ton of water but never drink it because we might need to go pee at the nasty bus stations, systematic dehydration starts the ... read more

Well Kuala Lumpa and me didn't get off to the best start. After flying in early in the morning and feeling utterly terrible and full of cold, I then had to queue up for an hour and a half (falling asleep on my bags on the trolley) for Air Asia to print out a flipping voucher for my transfer into town...cue a lovely hour and a half bus journey with a small child kicking the back of my chair. Seriously I could have thrown him out of the window. Annoying little shit. Found 'The Bird Nest' Guest house as recommended by Dani and fortunately they had one room left. It was tiny - if I did a star shape I could touch every wall. But I felt so rough I just wanted to lay down and ... read more

Welcome to part 1 of the blog (brown eye on Asia). After a 2 day journey including a 10 hour stop over at Cairo airport, we finally made in to KL feeling very jet lagged and tired. We jumped on the KLIA express train to KL central and from there hopped in a taxi asking to go to 'lok ann' hotel in chinatown. Instead of dropping us at the hotel, our driver stopped outside a crowded and crazy Chinese Market, which he assured us was only a short walk to lok ann. After 5 mins of stumbling around trying not too send people flying with our back packs, we decided to forget lok ann and head for the 1st hotel we saw. This turned out to be the fairly clean but relatively pricey 'tang city' hotel. ... read more

Sabah’s #1 attraction, apparently, is Mt Kinabalu. Standing almost alone, to a height of 4095 m (OK just over 13,435 feet for easier reference) this is a mountain higher than our own Mt Cook. However, in this climate, snow and ice are missing and the climb is accomplished with determination, not skill. Aunty Julia takes over the kids for a day and a half, while FJ and BP taste freedom after 100 days! The system is well oiled and. despite our frustration and protestations at the monopoly climbing costs, we turn up, collect our allocated guide, our packed lunches, a clutch of meal vouchers and off we go - fortunately in a taxi for the first 4.5 km’s! It’s 6.5 km’s straight uphill on day 1 and we achieve this easily, arriving at Laban Rata at ... read more

I forgot to mention that the day before while tubing, I ran into Julia Beeman and her two older brothers. The name sounded familiar, but I don't believe we had ever met. Anyways, one of her brothers graduated from my high school a few years before I did, while Julia and her younger brother both graduated from Woodbridge. Apparently, Julia and I were in the same class at Rancho Middle School! Small world, huh!? Tubing was just too much fun, so I had to spend another day doing that. I went with a Dutch brother/sister duo and a French guy that I met. Along the way, we added a guy from Massachusetts to our squad (not western Mass, sorry guys). Tubing was fun again this day, but the novelty had worn off so I spent less ... read more

What a change in scenery! Malaysia is nothing at all like india in any way. For starters the trip from our hostel in kolkata to the airport and flight went seemlessly. Our flight was on time and the cabin was not full of screaming children. The flight was 4 hours and a bit bumpy the whole way but the turbulence was nothing compared to our original flight from NYC. We arrived at KL international around 11pm and were through customs in less than 30 minutes. they asked us zero questions and didn't even get us to declare any goods. It was so painless it could have been a ruse but it was not. We met a catalonian on our flight who is taking a similar route through peninsular malaysia, thailand, cambodia, vietnam and lao and chatted ... read more
