The bus ride to Kuala Lumpur was mostly uneventful. We passed through immigration early on, having to get off and register with Singapore immigrations when we left Singapore and again with Kuala Lumpur when entering that country. At Kuala Lumpur I had to fill out the customary form. I was mostly finished, having not checked a few boxes on the back when the agent said “Just go ahead. Your bus is waiting.” I was amazed at the lack of concern. On the ride I spoke a bit with a man named Alan. I believe he is British (at least he sounds that way) and is living over here while he travels back and forth between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The most amusing part about Alan is that he looks and sounds exactly like Anthony Hopkins as ... read more

12 February 2010 - My 3rd visit to Kuala Lumpur. I decided to choose Kuala Lumpur instead of Bangkok for connecting my flight to Sri Lanka. Other than cheap flights on Air Asia, there were two more reasons for my visit to Kuala Lumpur this time. I wanted to meet my Malaysian friends and visit China town right before the Chinese New Year. In a couple of days, the Chinese community in Malaysia would celebrate the Year of the Tiger. My flight Hanoi - KL on Air Asia was delayed for 20 minutes, plus much time for immigration and then going to KL Sentral by Aero bus, so my friend had to wait for me for an hour. It was so nice to see someone holding a white paper with my name at the bus terminal. ... read more

Leaving India was hard after all the great experiences but we were excited by the start of a new adventure; Malaysia. Our first Air Asia experience was a good one. The flight went smoothly and the plane looked new, not the rusty piece of tin imagined when booking the journey for a measly £20. We arrived into a sleak, shiney Kuala Lumpur International Airport, our dusty Indian feet were in shock. We effortlessly made our way to the bus stand, with no taxi touts to fend off, where an air conditioned coach awaited us. An hour later we were in Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, just like that. Things actually seemed to work! The impressive KL metro system then took us to Chinatown where we hoped to stay. As we got off the platform and walked down ... read more

OK, Kuala Lumpur! Should begin with the fact that I'm one of those people who aren't hugely interested in going to the big cities. They're overcrowded, you don't usually meet many people because everyone is in a rush. They're also hugely overpriced etc etc etc.... But, I love this place. After the rush to make a decision to fly to KL instead of going back to Bangkok, the panic of not being able to book a flight online (for programming incompetence) and need of good fortune to get a ticket at the airport (even after being overcharged for the flight) it was a massive relief to land in the middle of nowhere... KL airport is about 75km from the city ya see! Getting through the airport was as smooth as it should be in a modern ... read more

Excited to be back in Asia. Exiting the plane, a wall of humidity hits me. After the 73km taxi ride into the central business area (KLCC), I stay one night at any guesthouse. In the middle of the night, it all comes back to me. Bed bugs. How could I forget? ‘In the morning, I’ll head straight to China Town.’ Pet Shops can be confronting in Asia. Turtles, snakes, parrots, galagos and baby rhesus monkeys, are all for sale here. Along with hundreds of birds kept in small cages. At another pet store, around the corner, my suggestion of giving water to the three giant rabbits panting in a tiny cage is obliged. And after pointing to a dead guinea pig; the shop assistant grabs it, wraps it in a newspaper, and throws it in the ... read more

Kuala Lumpar is crazy, crazy, crazy - sheer utter chaos!!! And we both love it! The entire city is bursting with life and people of all cultures. The bus trip from Melaka took 3 hours, one hour longer then we expected mainly due to traffic congestion in KL itself. We actually had to join a queue in the street leading to the bus station and then another queue just to enter the station. Once inside we felt like we had arrived in hell… The buses all park underground - it was a real test of driving skills just to position the bus into it’s parking spot. To leave the bus parking area you had to drag your suitcase along narrow pathways between the rows of stationary buses until you reached a narrow footpath leading you up ... read more
