We are in the middle of the longest segment of this cruise. It’s 35 days from Hong Kong to Cape Town---from Asia to Africa and everything in between. Fortunately there are many sea days and interesting ports as we are covering about a fourth of the world. On board we have decorated our cabin with some Chinese purchases and got some alterations done by the ship’s tailor. Many passengers have clothes made in China, Vietnam and Thailand. But that usually ties up all of your time in a port, so we have never gotten around to doing that. It is really nice to have Milton the Tailor come to our room, do the fittings and then several days later deliver the finished goods. There are crew members on board who perform a number of tasks such ... read more

Day Seven was handbag heaven! And not just handbags, pretty much everything I could ever wish for... I was on the biggest shopping high ever... We left the house at about 10am and caught a taxi into the city centre. We started off at Kota Raya - a small shopping complex near China Town. As it was still only 10.30, hardly any of the shops were open, so we wandered around the surrounding streets and found a Maccas! Since most of the other breakfasts we had seen involved curry, rice and mixed veggies, we decided it would be nice to have something a little bit familiar for breakfast. It was pretty much the same as it is over here, except they don't have bacon or sausage, they have chicken that looks like bacon and sausage. In ... read more

I arrived in KL yesterday in the early hours of the morning. I had not had much sleep on train so decided some sleep would be needed prior to heading out and exploring the city. I am a night owl any way (which is why I had chosen China Town area as I heard they have great night markets). Once I woke up it was time to head out and explore - a little tentatively of course being the geographical dyslexic I am. I have heard women can't read maps. The hostel I had chosen is right near the night markets so I headed that way to have a look around. I did not plan to buy anything as I will just have to lug it through Thailand and Indonesia and my packs are heavy enough ... read more

Good evening and welcome to the third installment of Hiral and Charlie, dazed & confused, out but not down, rocking all over South East Asia blog. Right now you find us in Wheelers Hostel, Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. There is not a fan in the place, it is sticky and raining and 9.59pm. Wheelers for a start is dumbfounding. Think dirty, think grotty, think an unsavoury block of flats in the Hackney area... Then, 2 floors up you enter the Twilight Zone, through the rabbit hole and bang into the he/she on the reception desk, surrounded by exotic false flowers, lanterns and an aquarium with a turtle. Our room is 'something to be desired' but at two pounds fifty pence at least we have a roof from the rain. We cannot believe we have now been away ... read more

Hello all! So glad I finally got some photos up on facebook of my adventures to show you, hopefully I can get more up soon. So I'll continue from the last blog, as I usually do... Saturday, 27 February - Nigel made his way to a water theme park for the day, I was kind of keen but wanted to see a bit of Kuala Lumpur so I decided to do a tour. I paid 38ringgit for a 'Hop on, Hop off' bus tour which takes you around Kuala Lumpur on a double-decker bus. I really love bus tours, I know I sound like a nana haha but they're heaps of fun. There's commentary the whole time and the bus stops at 42 bus stops around the city. I chose to stop at the The Petronas ... read more

What a hectic few weeks! Firstly, apologies for the fact that most of these photos are from ages ago but this is the fastest connection we have had so we have made the most of it! My last entry was from the beautiful island of Ko Lanta where we ended up staying for 6 nights, the longest we have stayed in one place since we set off. We took a day trip on a boat from there up to Ko Phi Phi which was absolutely stunning and Alex had her first decent experience of snorkelling over a coral reef which she loved. The day was tinged with sadness though as it was where one of my old mates from school died in the Boxing Day Tsunami. We explored Ko Lanta on a moped for a day ... read more

So I spend yesterday exploring the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Let me tell you I am glad I gave myself only one extra day there. I was a bit disappointed I went to the main palace first, about 11 am, I took a cab from my hotel which the hotel was much too far away but it was what it was. I got to the palace and paid my 50 cents for entry and I am glad I payed nothing more. Walking in it was basically open air spaces where the royalty either had ceremonies or slept, ate or chilled but there was no ornamentation, really no furniature and the museum of the palace, was not all that. There were manequins dressed up in traditional clothes and paintings of the sultans. One in particular was from ... read more

As the sun rises over Melbourne on the 6th of Feb 2010, I board my 1st flight (of many) on my long awaited world journey. As I walked towards the aircraft, I thought of all the people I've ever travelled with and how they're not here with me now - not physically anyway! I'm disappointed that my ideal of travelling with only hand luggage has failed so miserably...pain already throbbing in my shoulders... apparently these back packs aren't meant to hurt :/ hmmm... Spent 36hrs getting to KL from Melb!! gotta be a record!! upside is I got to spend a day in Perth with Bo & his family, which was super cool =) downside was spending 8hrs in Singapore airport, sleeping with one eye open (as metalica would say) until I finally reached KL - ... read more

I was awakened even earlier than expected this morning; not by my alarm but by one of the staffers who found it necessary to turn on the light to show a newly arrived guest his bed. I will never understand why some people insist on inconveniencing the lot for a few when so simple a solution as a cheap flashlight is could be bought. With no hope of going back to sleep, I made my way out of bed around 5:45. Breakfast was already out downstairs so I was able to eat and get cleaned up before taking the metro out to the Petronas Twin Towers. The towers’ skybridge is opened to tourists free of charge on a first come first served basis. Most advise getting there around 7:00 to ensure making it in the first ... read more
