Day 87 Our final few hours in the campervan so we had a big tidy up and packed our bags before heading towards Auckland along our second motorway of the trip! Before dropping the van off we wanted to head up to Mount Eden but driving in a major city is a bit different to all the country roads (and there was no signs!)...so it took us a while to find our way. It was worth the steep drive to the top though as we had panoramic views over the city and were stood on the edge of a crater of an extinct volcano!!! We then headed for a bite to eat in Mount Eden village before giving our van back and giving up our home of the past two weeks...we were told that we had ... read more

Day 81 We decided to start the day by having a treat and eating out for breakfast (we've been trying to save money!) so we headed into Porirua and found a shopping centre where we ate a yummy breakfast at the Coffee Club and had a look around the shops. We then made our way into Wellington and went to the Te Papa Museum and found out lots of interesting things about New Zealand's history. We decided to take a look at the Botanical Gardens and had a little picnic there before heading to our next destination...... Eastbourne!!!! We felt obliged to have a look around this small village that's the other side of the world!!! After our photo session in Eastbourne we had a very hilly and windy journey to find somewhere to stay for ... read more

Day 75 An early start and a day off driving for Brett as we hopped on board the Milford Explorer for our tour to Milford Sound. Apparently it's the wettest place in the world but we were lucky enough to have bright sunshine! After a couple of hours journey, with commentary from our young comedian driver, we reached Fiordland National Park and stopped off at various waterfalls, rivers and mountains...all spectacular scenery. Not long to our cruise part of the tour when we went past a "no stopping area", due to it being an avalanche zone, we were just going through a tunnel when drama occured...someone had broken down in the tunnel (the worst possible place!) meaning no one could get past either way...our driver reversed back out and past the avalanche area. We waited outside ... read more

Day 69 We had a really early start as we had to leave for the airport at around 04.30! We sat in the airport eating some breakfast amused listening to the announcements that another flight seemed to be missing most of it's passangers! Our flight was fine and we got another breakfast as we flew over the snow capped mountains of New Zealand and landed in Christchurch. With New Zealand three hours ahead (so 12 ahead of the UK) it was now the afternoon and we headed to our hostel, The Old Country House. We had a quick explore around the local area and were pleased with our fish and chip dinner which was a bargain and also very yummy! Day 70 We had a walk into the city centre and tried to find some warm ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island September 22nd 2010

Day 58 We woke early ready and excited for our two day tour of Fraser Island, although Brett was very itchy...since arriving in Australia we havent had to use much insect repellant and it has been nice both being bite free, however last night it was like The Empire Strikes Back as Brett was bitten half a dozen times! Ouch! We were collected from our hostel to the ferry crossing at River Heads. Due to having to pay for our tour we ended up getting on the ferry last and were unable to get past the cars, buses, etc to the paasenger level and had to stand in between all of the cars for the 40 minute journey! We did get VIP treatment at the other side though and were the first to exit along with ... read more

Day 47 Our overnight flight from Singapore to Brisbane went ok...we didnt get much sleep though, they feed you dinner at like 11pm and then wake you up at 4am for breakfast!!! Haha. Feeling shattered we were hoping for a quick exit from the airport but there was a long wait at passport control and then after collecting your bag you have to line up for security and to declare any food...we waited for about half an hour then when it was our turn, we declared our sweets and pringles, and were told to walk straight past the security check!!! Weird. After an expensive taxi ride we reached our hostel, Riverside Backpackers, which was based in Hawthorne (a suburb of Brisbane) around 9am. The hostel was totally different to the others we have been in, in ... read more

Day 42 After a Starbucks hot chocolate we checked out of our Hotel and got the bus down to Melaka. We stayed at a place called Cyclamen Cottage, which is classed as a heritage house and has actually been in the newspapers in England apparently. The building was really nice and the couple who owned it were really really friendly the whole time we stayed there. The only down side was that it was either a taxi or a 30 minute walk into the centre. We thought we would give the walk ago (killer in the sun!) and we found the now classic Chinatown as well as the other shops and restaurants etc. It's a really small town and a lot of the markets only opened at the weekend which was a shame. The town is ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand August 30th 2010

Day 29 After our final night of luxury we enjoyed another delicious breakfast and prepared our bags for our next destination. We popped down to 7/11 for a few supplies for the journey and then spent a short time relaxing by the pool before being picked up from the hotel. We got a ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don and were suprised to find that we had to pay 20 baht at the pier to enter the island (to help them keep it clean!). We wandered through the steets and headed for our hostel, PP Inghu Viewpoint which was located up a steep hill (Mandy had a little strop half way up and decided to sit on the road side due to being tired and hot!). We arrived at our tree top bungalow and although ... read more

Day 35 We were leaving Thailand today in order to head into Malaysia but Brett still wasn't feeling very well so we weren't expecting a fun journey. Also in the high season you can travel straight from Lipe to Langgkawi in a couple of hours but with it being the low season this wasn't possible and we had to head back towards Pakbara first and as we had only booked the first boat we knew it was going to be a long day! The journey began with our hotel kindly giving us a lift across the island by a bike and side car (we have no idea how many forms of transport we have used on this trip!) followed by a speed boat back to Pakbara. Simple start. As soon as we arrvied we had a ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island August 20th 2010

Day 18 We decided to head to Hong Kong Island (we were staying in Mong Kok, Kowloon) and found Hong Kong Park (yes we seem to love our parks over here!). The park was really interesting, with water fountains, a small Olympic arena where a fitness session was going on (Lee, its called route 25!) a big bird sanctuary and a nice cafe where we had lunch. We then headed to the promenade where you could see Kowloon and went to go to the brand new promenade (we had seen on our map) only to discover it was still being built! In the evening we went to the Avenue of Stars (Kowloon promenade) to watch the "Spectaular, exciting and unmissable light show" (again from our map) which turned out to be a bit naf! Prior to ... read more
