Hello everyone, First days 13&14 September 2011: So that’s it. I’m in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! I’m so happy. I start living my dream! Let’s start at the beginning. Tuesday morning, my parents kindly drove me to the airport Charles de Gaulle on the outside of Paris. As I’m always scared of being late, we left home around 7am and arrive to the airport well in advance at 7.45am, knowing that the flight was at 11.00am… But at the end, it was better! I headed then to the change office, because as a good user of internet, I ordered on internet a couple of days before some ringgit (the Malaysian money) and some traveller checks that I was supposed to pick up at the airport. Well, they told me they didn’t receive the money from the head ... read more

Yesterday we decided to head to Bukit Bintang to check out the shopping and reputedly excellent food choices. Firstly though we taxied (15RM) to KL Sentral (the main rail station) to pick up our tickets (skillfully booked by yours truly via internet) for the jungle railway (207RM - 1st class sleeper). Four information counters later and we'd got tickets and a free map of KL. On current evidence I'd call that a pretty efficient use of time. That done we taxied (13RM - booked via the budget taxi desk just to the right of the main doors) to Bukit Bintang Lot 10 shopping centre. This for me is the affluent vulgar side of KL and is probably the only side of KL you'll see if you have money. Still, we did manage to find a decent ... read more

This part of the trip was always going to be about getting over the flight/travel and time difference. Four days in the capital city seemed like a reasonable time to see a few things and get up to speed. As it turns out it's going to probably be twice as long as we need. Maybe for me this has something to do with one beer costing as much as a full meal or maybe it's because the city is very spread out and in the heat it generally means a taxi ride. Either way, I'm more or less ready for the jungle railway. Oh, and someone should have told us that you don't need to bring anything with you, it's all available right here and for less than half the price at home........ read more

Our wonderful Vietnamese friends picked us up bright and early and drove us to the Hanoi airport. Security was a breeze, besides the shaking of the hands about my insulin pump.. but they let me go anyway. Air Asia again proved to be the best budget airline with great service, yummy food and an easy flight. I ended up finding an empty row and spreading out for a nap. Thirty minutes after landing we were through immigration, had our bags, changed some money to Ringgit (Malaysian money) and on the bus to meet Mom at the other airport 10 minutes away. We found her quite easily and then started the journey to the train station to get us to China Town. A little more challenging then we expected, but with our handy Lonely Planet map we ... read more

Feeling like we know the place inside out, we hop on the train to get to Central Market. This is held mostly indoors in air conditionig - the best way do markets! Had the best chocolate and banana cake here and bought a few goods which was fun. It's quite funny purchasing some goods overseas - they seem absolutely essential while you're here but realise you'll most likely never use them again. Case in point - the fisherman's pants we picked up at the market! They did serve a purpose though - long pants to wear at the temples - however we doubt they'll come out of the closet for quite some time! At least its good value for money - both BJ and I can wear the same pair! We gave our bargaining skills a ... read more

We woke up on the train going back into Kuala Lumpur. We were both sporting some pretty sweet bed-head, so we got a quick breakfast at the station and headed back to Chinatown to find a place to stay. We ended up at the first place we stayed at and found it was a lot nicer than we had previously thought, with free internet and an open-air restaurant that looked out over the street. We showered and changed and headed back to Sentral Station to get tickets to the Batu Caves. We had been told just to get a cab, but this was ridiculous advice considering that a one-person one-way ticket cost 1 ringgit (about 40 cents). We headed out to the caves at about 10 in the morning. There are many Hindu temples around and ... read more

On Friday night I got a friend to take my last class and Joel and I immediately picked up our backpacks and made our way to Seoul Incheon Airport. This involved taking a cab to Suwon (close, larger town) and picking up a shuttle bus from a hotel. We withdrew Malaysian ringgits from the bank (which is a pretty snazzy trick if you ask me) and were able to skip a really long check-in line by using a little trick my mom taught me called “Just try it.” The line for “self check-in” was short, but we didn’t have e-tickets or the credit card that booked our tickets. I just tried it anyway and what do you know? It worked. The flight to Kuala Lumpur was not fantastic. It was a 6-hour red-eye flight with ... read more

It’s fair to say that, given the choice, Amy and I would both prefer the quieter town setting for travelling rather than the big bad city. Arriving into the bus station in Kuala Lumpur, we weren’t sure what to expect from this capital. After our time in the Cameron Highlands, and given our excellent experiences in both George Town and on the Perhentian Islands, each gave us good reason to be excited about this particular city. We were dropped off on the north side of China town, a few minutes’ walk from Petaling Street, the hectic centre of the Chinese district. Carefully weaving our way through the street side vendors, fruit salesmen and the beeping cab drivers (not to mention braving the various pungent smells), we arrived at our accommodation for the following three nights. After ... read more

Had good weather for the 4 days we've been in KL. not too hot & only a few late showers. The hotel, Mandarin Court is average but in a great location 5 mins walk to Chinatown & 2 mins to monorail It costs 1ringitt 60sen to Bukit Bintang which is one of the many large shopping centres here. Chinatown is good if you don't mind haggling & you can get some good bargains but get there early to avoid the crush. There are plenry of eateries there but we opted for The Ship which is at Bukit Bintang, go right as you exit the monorail & at the bottom of the stairs you'll see Macdonalds across the road, look to the left & see a sign, "the best steaks in town" & they are & very good ... read more

This is a phrase we have used frequently over the last couple of days. So after our last post - waiting for breakfast - we thought we'd have a little 'rest', only to wake up at 4pm. Oops. We did manage to head to KLCC (the city centre hub, like the Westfields of KL), where after trying some local fast food (but avoiding the chicken) decided to go for the safer option of Nandos. This was after a visit to their aquarium which was interesting - where we saw the biggest fish of our lives! Post Nandos we headed to the cinema to see the latest Harry Potter film (very cultural!!). Before heading back to the hostel for sleep.. or not. After very little sleep we forced ourselves out of bed and out into the hustle ... read more
