We went back into China Town last night for something to eat and the jet lag and lack of sleep over the last 48 hours finally took its toll. So we came back to the hostel for 6ish, trying to stay awake as long as we could. Neil gave up at about 8pm and I lasted until about 9.30. Had a really good night's sleep, and must have gone out for the count as didn't hear any of our other roommates come back in. (There are 8 beds in the room in total). We had decided to go to see the Petronas towers today and so had to be up by 7am, we were showered and had our breakfast by 8 (I need to be more organised on a night as the room had no windows ... read more

We set off on our journey at 5.30 on the train from Durham Station to Edinburgh. The journey was very quick as the train made no stops after Newcastle which meant we got there just after 7. We decided to go straight to the Castle for a photo opportunity but unfortunately for us they were setting up for the Tattoo so we were unable to get anywhere near it! Instead we had a coffee in Cafe Nero on the Golden Mile, the Edinburgh Fringe was in full swing so there were plenty of comings and goings to watch as we passed some time and had our coffee. From there we went and had some tea in the Floodlights bar followed by a trip to the Odeon to see Ted. Again filling more time in before we ... read more

We are now in Kuala Lumpur as you might have guessed from the title. We spent 3 days in Ko Samui which we both fell in love with. It was lovely, a combination of the lovely weather, gorgeous beach and laidback vibe of eating meals or having drinks on big bean bags on the beach. All in all it was our favourite island out of the three and our guest house was lovely too. We then caught a ferry to Surat Thani and stayed cheaply in a resort with its own swimming pool, massive rooms with air con and free breakfast all for just a little bit more money then our standard guest houses. This was only a stopoff however as we had a flight the next morning to Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is manic and ... read more

After the quiet subdued islands of the Perhentians we arrived in the hustling bustling centre of KL! Our hostel was one minutes walk from Chinatown which had a massive market so our pennies took a hit! Two handbags and three purses later Paul dragged Rachel away to go see some other sites. We visited the Petronas Towers whch were very impressive especially at night!... read more

Whenever I arrive in a new part of Asia I keep waiting for it to assault my westernized senses with dirt and poverty. Malaysia being a predominately Muslim country I was also expecting to not see another female except for eyes peaking out from holes in a black sheet. Kuala Lumpur was a nice surprise. I have to say other than a confusing lack of pedestrian crossings, this city is quite nice. It is clean and has a useful transit system. There are about a million things to do here, and I wish I had scheduled more time here. For the museum geek such as myself there is the National Museum, the Islamic Arts Museum, the Textile Museum, and I could go on. I even went through the trouble of donning a purple cloak and head scarf ... read more

Technically these experiences should have had their own post but I'm going to Put them all into one. Malacca Malacca was the next destination after Singapore. Ruben recommendedthis destination and because we trust him we decided to go. So We decided to leave pretty early to get an early bus do that we would have time to visit the city and then continue to KL , what we didMott expect is that the day before last to have had an earthquake and tsunami warnings. Due to that there were not many people travelling so there would onlhave one bus!!! Until we found thegodforsaken station which is not even a station but asparking place- everyone we asked directed us somewhere else! We finally reach the station, see our bus, but no driver, he must have been sleeping ... read more

One of the best ways to view a city- at least on an introductory level is a city tour. Its kind of weird spending Easter (Orthodox) touring a city but hey, its an experience. It started really early, meaning that at 8 :45 we were picked up and ready to go. Mr Fong our guide picked us up, an after a short stop to registrate, we begam the tour. First stop was at a chinese temple. In Malaysia they are mainly Muslims, Hindu, and Chinese, so you see all of these influences throughout- our hostel is surrounded by all those temples of the above religions. To continue the description of the tour, we have been introduced to certain ceremonies, first being that we had to take off your shoes. We went inside the temple which was amazing, ... read more

Hiya everyone!! We have spent the last 5 nights in Kuala Lumpur and we have had a really good time it is a really cool city really reminds us of London. On our first night we stayed in Times Square which has the most amazing shopping centre it is huge and has a roller coaster. This area is the richer area and we only stayed here because everywhere else was booked up as the grand prix was on. The hostel we stayed in was really nice and all of the staff were helpful and gave us loads of advice. On our second day we bought tickets to go up the KL telecommunication tower it is one of the tallest ones in the world and the view was amazing we also moved hostel to one called Back ... read more

Hi everyone, We haven't updated in a while so we've got lots of pictures this time. When we last updated we were in Georgetown. We traveled by coach to Kuala Lumpur which was the most comfortable journey we have had yet. On the first night we headed out to see the most popular sight of the city which is the Petronas towers. They were amazing to see at night all lit up, they almost didn't seem real. The next day we went to the central market as Steph wanted to find some presents for her family (ate pancakes) and we posted our mothers day letters at the central sorting office. We then walked on to the main park in KL and went into the planetarium (it was free) and then walked past the worlds largest walk ... read more
