We have spent the last 10 days in Flores and central Bali. We went to Flores (Labuan Bajo) for diving with slightly low spirits after the disaster that was Lembogan but Flores did not dissapoint. It was the best 3 days diving either of us had experienced and was a perfect finale to the holiday. We were only planning on Toby doing 2 dives and Connie doing maybe 4 but we ended up both doing 6 because what we saw was simply amazing. Our guide before we started diving asked us what we wanted to see. So we requested manta rays and jokingly frog fish. 2 dives later, we had seen 7 manta rays and 2 frog fish. Not a bad start really. We then went to Rinca to see Komodo dragons and saw 11. The ... read more

The 4 nigths we spent in Kuta, Bali were completely different from Bunaken. We went from a remote location with few tourists to millions of tourists all milling around with varying colours of Bintang tops. It took us a while to get a taxi to get us to our requested road and then a good hour walking round to find somewhere to stay. We ended up staying in Ayu Beach Hotel with 4 of us in a really nice room. There were 2 pools and breakfast was included too. The first 2 days we spent walking around, sunbathing and shopping and then a night out to Sky Garden which is where everyone ends up at some point. This place is huge and Connie got lost trying to get back to one of the roof terraces. We ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Bunaken National Park August 26th 2012

We have now finished 11 nights staying in Bunaken. Travelling has been a bit of a nightmare because we found out really late that all the locals go travelling 1 week before and 1 week after the end of ramadan which causes everything to be booked out and prices to increase to silly amounts. We decided to just sit it out in Bunaken marine national park which has world renowned diving. We managed to get a room with Matt and Linda which decreased the price a lot cause we had a double bed matress on the floor. We were there 11 nights and had parties on 4 of those nights. Matt and Linda did their Open Water PADI while Connie and I did 6 dives (one of which was a night dive). The diving in Bunaken ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Kalimantan » Derawan August 26th 2012

Hey hey. Sorry about the lack of updates, connies forgot to publish the last one so it has been sitting saved for ages. We have spent 10 nights in Derawan which can only be described as paradise. We spent every day snorkelling in the morning and afternoon and the evenings playing cards with various people on piers over the ocean. The snorkelling was fantastic with crocodile fish, stone fish and scorpion fish being regular sightings and we have now swum with over 100 turtles. One slight problem was that it was really remote so there was no ATM on the island so connie and i lived off 6p packet of noodles for about 5 nights straight but on the last night a spanish family took us out for dinner to give us some proper food. While ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Kalimantan » Sangatta July 30th 2012

We left Kuala Lumpur for Balikpapan in East Kalimantan (South Borneo) on the 27th at 4 in the morning. Two taxis, a flight, train and two bus journeys later we arrived mid-afternoon in Samarinda. Here we checked into the Hotal Gelora which looked slightly run down to say the least. However, it was pretty clean and the staff, with very limited English, were all lovely. After most people being able to speak at least a bit of English in Malaysia, Indonesia is a stark contrast where charades are needed to describe the simplest of things but everyone says hello to you on the street. We organised, through the hotel, a trip up to Kutai Wildlife National Park where we were to do jungle treks in the hopes of finding orangutans! We drove for 4 hours and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur » China Town July 25th 2012

We are now in Kuala Lumpur as you might have guessed from the title. We spent 3 days in Ko Samui which we both fell in love with. It was lovely, a combination of the lovely weather, gorgeous beach and laidback vibe of eating meals or having drinks on big bean bags on the beach. All in all it was our favourite island out of the three and our guest house was lovely too. We then caught a ferry to Surat Thani and stayed cheaply in a resort with its own swimming pool, massive rooms with air con and free breakfast all for just a little bit more money then our standard guest houses. This was only a stopoff however as we had a flight the next morning to Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is manic and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui July 20th 2012

Hey hey We are now in ko Samui. We spent 2 nights in Ko Pha-ngan but we didnt go to the black moon party as we had origionally planned. The music was advertised as Pshy Techno which isnt really our scene and it was also pretty empty due to the fact its low season. So instead we stayed at a hostel called munchies which we had all to our selves. Its bar was on stilts that overhung the beach which we also had all to ourselves. All in all it was a lovely place to stay and quite sureal cause it was so deserted. It would also be awesome in high season however. We caught a boat to Ko Samui this morning and it could not be more different. The beach is busy with all the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao July 16th 2012

Arrived in Koh Tao afer a mission of a bus journey from Bangkok and a calm ferry crossing, all in all taking 15 hours. Toby started his Open Water course that afternoon and Connie did her EFR the following day. At time of writing this, Toby has just passed his final exam and we have some awesome dives under our belts from lots of different sites from around the island. This morning we saw a turtle and have also seen shoals of baracuda, numerous trigger fish, angel fish, banner fish, yellow boxfish and sweet lips fish... Not bad really! Tomorrow we are doing a 30m dive which will be our best chance to see a reef shark or two and qualifies Toby to dive to that depth from now on (even though he's only OW) and ... read more

Just booked our bus and ferry from Bangkok to Koh Tao so are still at our hostel - the Lamphu House. It's perfectly adequate, clean but very hot... The staff are lovely and didn't mind us turning up two hours late due to late flights and it taking us over an hour to get through passport control. Other than those two little delays, the travelling from London to here was fine and we had lots of movies to keep us entertained!... read more
