This years adventure is going to be a trip with my daughters, Amy and Emily. We are flying from Newcastle via Heathrow to JFK and then on to Orlando. We are staying at Hostel International NY for 3 nights and then flying to Orlando to stay with Amy's friend Elise for the rest of the holiday. Tonight we have sat and worked out an outline itinerary for our stay in New York. There are a number of places we would all like to see and others that one or another of us would like to see! The main things we have booked is a trip to 'The Top of The Rock' as the sun goes down over the city and a tour around the 9/11 Memorial. The rest we are going to wing! Our flight was another very early one so we were up about about early and off to the airport. The flight was only a couple of hours and in good Air Aisia style landed early. Lots of turbulence so wasn't the best flight we'd had. Although we had landed at the international terminal we taxied over to the other one so we had to get the bus into KL Sentral rather than the train. It was about an hours journey which passed reasonably quickly. Once back at Sentral we were into the hussle and bussle and only had a one stop train journey back to China Town and Backpackers. When we got there, there was lots of luggage in the entrance and people waiting to leave for flights etc. We were very lucky and although we ... read more

We had another early start this morning, up at 7, breakfast and then waiting for the minibus to come and pick us up at 8.30am. It took about 45 minutes to get to the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Hotel and Orang Utan rehabilitation centre. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous with its golf course and glorious views over the South China Sea. It had its own little beach with wicker sun loungers placed in small groups around the grounds. We were let through the hotel complex and to the Rehabilitation Centre. Here we watched and video on how the centre work with Sepilok to rehabilitate young orphan orang utans. After the video we were led up into the rainforest surrounding the resort to a feeding platform. One of the rangers climbed onto the platform and started shouting. Very ... read more

Monday 20th August, 2012 Today we had decided on a lazy day so we had a bit of a lie in before making our way on the short taxi ride to Tanjung Aru Beach. We spent about 4 hours here and the sun was very intense. We did a little sunbathing and a little swimming/snorkelling but by early afternoon we had had enough sun and decided to come back to the hotel for a little siesta before showering and getting ready for the evening. After this we made our way back along to Tanjung Aru Beach at about 5.30 and it promised to be a good sunset with not as much cloud as previous nights. When we got there, there were lots of people on the beach, some eating in the restaurants or stalls, others just ... read more

I forgot to mention in my previous blog that on our way up to Mt Kinabalu we stopped by the roadside as one of the Rafflesia flowers was flowering. We paid the equivalent of 6 pounds each to walk a short way off the road to see the bloom which was about 60cm in diameter. Apparently it's the world's largest flower, doesn't have roots, stems or leaves but blotch red and white petals. It takes 9 months to mature but only flowers for about 5 days before it dies. The one we saw was on its fifth day and was just starting to look a bit passed its best, but it was good to see one. We also stopped en-route and the upside down house. Apparently a family live it in and they have one little ... read more

This morning was another early start with us up for breakfast at 7.30 as we were being picked up by our tour company at 8.30. More or less on time our minibus arrived and after dropping a couple of girls off in town we found out that we were the only people on the trip. The journey to Kinabalu Park took about 2.5 - 3 hours. The views were spectacular and we climbed high into the mountains. The roads were very good for the most part but in places workmen were working on them and they were a little bumpy but it just added to the experience. Eventually we got to Kinabalu Park, our driver paid the conservation fee and we entered. He thought we'd like to visit the Botanical Gardens overlooking Mt Kinabalu, but as ... read more

Wednesday 15th August, 2012 I was up and about early this morning to get ready and have breakfast before I went diving. The minibus picked me up at about 8.20 and there were already four people on it. It turned out that one of the couples had both been teachers and they lived at Whitley Bay! Small world! They were with their son and his partner whom he'd met in Middlesborough but was originally from Singapore and they both lived there now. After a short journey a chap got on with his two children. He lived in Hong Kong but his daughter and son lived in Henley with their mother. The four from Whitley Bay/Singapore were going snorkelling and the family were all going diving. It was just a short ride to the marina where our ... read more

The morning of our flight to Kota Kinabalu was spent getting our luggage ready and just chilling out in the cool of the hostel. We had decided not to go out this morning as we had had such a busy day the day before and didn't really want to be flying all hot and bothered. A few people were watching a repeat of the closing ceremony of the Olympics in the common area so we sat and watched that for a while until our taxi came. The journey to the airport took us about 30 minutes and it gave us a good opportunity to see more of the City. Taking the underground all of the time is very convenient but you don't always get a full appreciation of where everything is in relation to everything else. ... read more

We started our last full day in Singapore with an early start. There is so much we want to do but will really struggle to fit it all in. We were up and out of the hostel by 8am and straight on the train to take us down to Marina Bay. Here we walked all the way along the front, eventually coming out at the Art and Science Centre/Museum. At the moment there is an Andy Warhol exhibition on and also a Harry Potter one. The building is something else and looks like a huge unfurling flower on the skyline. Underneath it there is a large pond with tiny fish swimming around and also lots of water lilies in lots of different colours. We took some time to photograph some of the lilies but didn't have ... read more

After a very welcome shower we took the train into Little India for something to eat. We wandered round the Hawker Stalls a number of times trying to decide what we wanted and which stall to go to. Eventually we settled on one. Neil stuck to his 'vegetarian' fare of chickpea curry accompanied with onion bhaji and a couple of other side dishes with rice. I had the same only I added in some tandoori chicken. From another stall we got 2 glasses of freshly made limeade. The food was very fiery and we were soon ordering another drink! In the end we had ordered far too much but the meal cost us less than 6 pounds. Quite a bargain! After eating we wandered round for a little while before returning to the hostel as we ... read more
