Der ... read more

I have traveled to Penang, Malaysia by air, rail and car. That was during the period when I lived in Bangkok, Thailand. The city became almost like a second home to me as I went there so many times. I have often come across frequent travelers who like to talk about their favorite cities they have either been to, or worked/lived in. None of them have ever mentioned Penang as being their favorite. Well, for me this city has been my top destination for many years. So when people ask me about my favorite Asian city, I always answer them, "Easy question....it's Penang," and unless I see another new city or town that I really like, I doubt that my opinion will change. I like Penang for a number of reasons. It is a multi cultural ... read more

Usually I don't bother to write much about little museums I visit. When a museum is only the size of a room or two, there's not a lot to say. I've visited quite a few Sun Yat Sen museums over the years. Nearly everywhere I went in China I could find one. He's a popular guy! The only problem, though, was that most had signs that either had no English or very poor English. Without the aid of google, I would have never figured out , why he was so popular. (The irony of that is not lost on me.) Until now. The Sun Yat Sen museum in George Town is fantastic. I only had an hour, but was delighted to discover that I could have easily spent more time there. It's not large, of ... read more

George Town is a historic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's easy to wander the streets for hours on end, discovering all sorts of little things along the way. The first trick is to slow down and take your time. The second is to look without your camera in front of your face, while also keeping it ready to take a shot at a moment's notice--you never know what you'll see around the next corner! I spent a full day wandering around the city and found many hidden treasures. If I'd had more time, I could have easily spent more, stopping along the way for coffee and cake at any of the numerous cafes around town. It's full of winding streets, small shops, and old architecture. It felt like I was stepping back in time--a ... read more

George Town has an art walk. Not a little one, either, mind you. It's big. Bigger than I had anticipated. And it's also a great way to spend an afternoon. My friend got a map of it at her hostel, but you can also get a map at the tourist office. The art walk is all over the city, featuring both painted works of art and also sculpture. Many are interactive and people pose with them for photos. (Which makes it difficult if you want to take a photo of JUST the art--it confused a lot of other tourists! "You're not running to stand next to it... so you must not want a photo?") It was as much fun to see people pose with the art as it was to see the art. Finding the pictures ... read more

Just a quick walk up the road takes you to an area with a different feel to it. Fort Cornwallis sits on the sea and is in a neighborhood of gran old buildings. It's also next to the famous Queen Victoria Jubilee Clock Tower, so it's easy to see both in one stop. Fort Cornwallis was built in the late 1700's by the British. At only 2 MYR to enter, it's a steal. Parts are undergoing restoration, but what's there is good. Lots of artifacts, cannons, and historical places of interest are easy to walk around and see. The fort is filled with many firsts and largests in Malaysia. Sufficed to say, it's one photo opp after another! Not everywhere is paved, though, so be wary of slippery spots as you make your way around!... read more

With perfect weather predicted for the day, some friends I met in Melaka and I decided to take a trip out to the Kek Lok Si Temple. It's a bit out of town but well worth the visit. It's a peaceful temple with monks living there, so it's still in use. Sadly, though, it's also been turned into a tourist attraction with gift shops galore--and you need to walk through all of them to get in and out of the temple. While I found the mass commercialization and selling of tourist trinkets (not at all related to a temple of any kind) to be rather disheartening, the temple itself was wonderful. We climbed lots and lots of stairs and saw beautiful architecture, paintings, and amazing views of the whole area. We'd been advised that this was ... read more

Trishaws! Penang, Malaysia After a night and day traveling north through the Straights of Malacca between Sumatra and Thailand, we arrived at Penang, Malaysia at 4:00 in the evening. No bus for this tour….. Trishaws! Yes! Our tour took us all over Georgetown, Penang in a Trishaw “cab”. The “cabs” were a little small, and the tour leader asked if Cope would like to have his own Trishaw and driver, and he jumped at the chance, so off we went with separate drivers. Our drivers were not young or big by any means but were they strong ;-). Pedaling us furiously to tour all over town. My driver liked to pedal fast and always passed everyone else up and got me to each point first! ;-) Our first stop was the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also ... read more

Sunday, 19th October 2014 I was probably up and about at around 7+ this morning. After a quick wash-up, I walked over to Sunway Hotel where we met for our morning swim. HP and KW were up early as well and it was nice that we had the empty pool to ourselves. The pool was really small and would only be good for the three of us. After the swim, HP decided to head back to the room to rest while KW and myself went ahead with the complimentary breakfast at the hotel. Later on, we had lunch at New Lane before we went separate ways as they had to return back to Singapore in the afternoon. With little difficulty, I took a public bus from Komtar to the bus stand at Penang Hill. Enroute, it ... read more
