Saturday, 18th October 2014 The skies were rainy as my Jetstar flight made her second landing attempt at the Penang International Airport. It got me real nervous after failing on its first descend. Finally, at 5pm this afternoon, my flight landed safely at the Bayan Lepas Airport - signalling the start of my 8 days trip around Penang and Thailand. Catching the RM 2.70 public bus from the airport to downtown Penang was straight forward enough for me. After about 50 minutes on the road, the driver dropped us at the KOMTAR bus interchange where I made my way to the hotel on foot. I was staying at the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g298303-d1231105-r236703222-Tune_Hotel_Downtown_Penang-George_Town_Penang_Island_Penang.htmlTune Hotel along Jalan Burmah and it wasn't really fun walking under the rain while keeping a lookout on the signs that point... read more

... read more

Pretty much as the title indicates it felt like every time we drove to a new town we were lost as can be, but eventually managed to find our way to our destination. PENANG island - felt like it took days and days to get there (in reality it was probably more like 8 hours). It was a beautiful drive from the park though so not complaining too much. We were pretty excited about Penang hence the decision to stay two days (a major victory for Nikkie). We arrived pretty late at night (probably around 8:30 at night). We were amazed by the street food stalls and activity as we drove through GEORGETOWN. Our hotel for the night was the STRAITS COLLECTION HOTEL. The reason we booked this is that the rooms consist of old houses ... read more

Well kids after the Cameron Highlands we took the very long bus trip to Penang. Lovely busting city and our home for the next few days was to be Georgetown. Our guest house was on Love Lane which is a really nice place to be based and full of really cook street art, Adam was in heaven! After dumping our bags and asking our host for an authentic food recommendation, she sent us armed with a map to a veggie indian place. Food was immense to say the least! Everyone says that Penang is famed for its food, they was NOT wrong! Meat really had no place in this meal....soz all you carnivores..... After food we walked to the clan jetties to have a look at an ancient chinese settlement of families who live amongst the ... read more

I had heard so many conflicting things about George Town before I went there. Actually scrap that, I'd heard so many conflicting things about Penang in general! So I was wondering whether or not to bother going there - I'm so glad now that I did! You can get to George Town by land or by taking a short ferry ride - I'd recommend a ferry ride. It's cheap and if you come via land then you get dumped down in one of the most unscenic parts of the town. It doesn't give a great first impression. I stayed in House of Journey hostel which was amazing - I really recommend it, they are super friendly. Though the air conditioning in the dorm was a bit too cold for my liking (I'd actually read that from ... read more

Soitin spahan lauantaina ja kysyin jalkahierontaa ja itselle jotain raskaana olevalle sopivaa hoitoa. Jalkahieronnan sain varattua, mutta ei nainen kyllä osannut kertoa mistään raskaana olevan hoidoista, vaikka esitteessä kehotettiin kysymään asiasta span henkilökunnalta. "Oh, you are pregnant together?" "Öööh - yes." "I will...aaaah...." "You will ask?" "Yes, sir." "OK, let my husband know tomorrow, then." "Press zero one. Good bye, sir." No, soitin sitten respaan, jossa ei tajuttu asiasta senkään vertaa.

Arrived in Penang feeling hung-over from the night bus trip without actually having drunk a drop. I dont travel well on night transport but it saves on time as well as a few bucks on accommodation. I get both envious & furious when l hear someone snoring loudly & contentedly before take-off. Anyway after then catching the first ferry over from Butterworth to Georgetown, I watched the dawn sky lighten over the Malacca Straits. Not my favourite time of day & not even the beauty of Penang at sunrise alleviated my irritability. I just wanted to find my hostel & shower. That's when l slipped & turned my ankle. I went down like a bag of excrement. There was no one around to help scrape me back up, nor any taxis around at that hour on ... read more

OK I haven't been the best at keeping this up to date but there is too much food to eat rather than writing blogs! Anyway here are another couple of entries and I'll try to catch up to where we are now soon. Our trip to Georgetown, Penang was one of the worst journeys we've done on our trip. It took 16 hours to get from Surat Thani to our hostel. The first leg was a mini bus down to Hat Yai, the last big town before you reach the Malaysian border. We made good progress to here and we were dropped off on a street with a load of travel agents offering trips to Penang, we just had to find the best priced one and the one leaving next. That was the problem, they were ... read more
