Walking around the old city of George Town, Penang, is a fun exercise. One of the things guaranteed to bring a smile to your face – unless you’re truly a grumpy, old curmudgeon – is the street art. On July 7, 2008, George Town was officially named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique architecture and cultural heritage. As such, the historic core of the city has remained. Renovation of old buildings is encouraged, and there are financial incentives for building owners to refurbish the outside of their structures to historic accuracy. High rises and modern shopping malls are relegated to the outskirts. In 2012 the Penang Municipal Council made the bold move of commissioning a Lithuanian artist named Ernest Zacharevic to create a series of murals around the city. Collectively these are called “Mirrors ... read more

Geo: 5.41721, 100.336Malaysia is growing on me day by day. The past couple of days have been crazily busy that I haven't had time to update on what's been happening. I'll start from 3 days ago and mission get to the fruit farm, attempt 2. Result: success! The wonderful hostel people called the farm who said that I could go to the batik factory and ask the staff to call the fruit farm who would then send a shuttle bus for me. So off I trot and 1.5 hours on a super air-conditioned bus later I arrive at the factory and sure enough 15 minutes after this my shuttle arrives -service! The fruit farm had over 250 species of tropical fruit (who knew there were so many?!) - durian trees, dragon fruit which grow on cacti, ... read more

Geo: 5.41721, 100.336People use a lot of poetic license when describing (places in) Malaysia - quiet beaches in a national park actually means smelly, polluted beaches at the end of a long hike. City beaches actually means beautiful beaches more commonly found in a national park. Great public transport means good buses that spend hours stuck in Georgetown's terrible traffic, and, well you get the idea. People seem to have very strong views about whether they prefer Georgetown or Malacca. I think they are very different places. Malacca is more about the heritage and tourist sights crammed into a small area. Georgetown, named after King George III, also has the ubiquitous heritage sights, mosques and temples but is spread out over a much larger area- a whole island to be precise. My first day here was ... read more

Geo: 5.41999, 100.337Busy busy busy! The last few days have passed in a blur of bus rides, sightseeing, socializing and the odd beer. I'll start at the beginning...We left Malacca for the 2 hour bus ride through mangrove swamps, palm trees and lush forests back to KL. Once there we decided to head to the Petronas Towers (there really is nothing else to do in KL!) as Ro had never seen them. We took lots of photos and spent 3 hours sitting by the side of the fountain talking to random people from Dubai, Russia, Spain, Serbia and Indonesia. It was nice to see the towers lit up at night, they're really beautiful. On Monday I decided to stay an extra day in KL and went to Palau Ketam- the Chinese fishing village of about 8000 ... read more

After the crazy day careering around Phi Phi, a sense of calm prevailed on our one free day this week. Sally and I decided to spend it on Krabi's Ao Nang beach, blissfully peaceful and empty with everyone else presumably on their speedboats. The heavens opened in time for dinner (as usual) so the whole group forsook Thai cuisine and had dinner in the Carnivore restaurant next to the hotel - guess what they specialise in! Then on Sunday we headed off for the border, and our next destination, Penang in Malaysia. A ten hour drive by minibus, which was much more comfortable than we expected. Our last Thai meal that lunchtime, in a simple roadside cafe was, homestay banquet aside, easily the best. In fact we were a bit disappointed with food in Thailand, too ... read more

A nice 5 day stopover here. We stayed at 1926 heritage hotel. Nice place for a great price. Had a lovely swimming pool to boot. Highlight was eating food for sure. Plenty of meals were spent at the hawker stalls on Jalan Burmah and Jalan Chulai (little India area). One downside we noted that there was some overcharging going on by Taxi drivers. Annoying but it seems that happens even to locals to a degree. But generally prices are on a par with Johor bahru and KL being slightly more expensive. Didn't do much just relaxed, looked at the shops/markets, malls, movies, eating, walking on the beach. We were lucky to spend Divali eve down at little India - great place to be...... read more

Panang had been highly recommended for Malaysian food so obviously that's where we were headed next. A last minute decision, train over bus had us faffing around booking tickets at 2am in the morning and expired webpage meant we had no booking reference, e-ticket or print out. This made for a grumpy start and long wait at the station since we arrived so early to make sure we could travel. The train journey to Butterworth, ferry to Georgetown then long walk to the centre left us drained and we gave in to a slightly more expensive but nice hostel. In fact, it seems that accommodation all across Malaysia is much more expensive as is the beer whilst food remains cheap. Its seems strangely disproportionate. Reviews were right, the 'Red Garden Food Paradise' (food court) nearby had ... read more

We got the first boat the following morning back to the mainland and were all a bit sad to be leaving the beautiful Perhentians as it had been an amazing few days. We found a bus company called Star Travel and booked onto a bus to take us to the Cameron Highlands. The Cameron Highlands are made up of luscious green hills and are known for their cool climate, vast array of tea plantations, and strawberry farms. When the bus turned up it wasn't quite what we had expected and instead Laura, Jon and I amongst others were squashed into a tiny, sweaty minibus and spent a lot of the journey holding our breath and hoping for the best as our driver weaved his way in and out of the traffic at what felt like 80mph. ... read more

Justin's package arrived so we got the bus to Penang. Firstly having a cheap lunch with Ben in a different food court. He was leaving for Bali the next day. Justin and I arrived in Penang at 6pm. Penang is known for having amazing food so the first thing (after finding our hostel - Love Lane Hostel) was to eat. We ended up sat outside a bar having buy one get one free cocktails. It was great, just getting to know each other and also later joined by other travellers. Two South African girls, Jocelyn and Kisrt with a couple of other guys (whose names I do not remember). A few drinks later, we ended up in a club, Slippery Señoritas. We originally thought there would be live music here, but we ended up dancing and ... read more

After a little time in Malaysia, it feels more like home than anywhere else we have visited in Asia so far. Mark is currently pining for a good steak and glass of Malbec, but that's not exactly Malaysia's fault! The Malaysian people are really friendly and speak good English, even in the small market stalls and corner shops. There is also a more noticeable blend of different cultures here, so it feels less like we stand out from the crowd, especially with fewer white tourists around (as it also appears that we had left many of the backpacking/party types behind in Thailand). This could be due to the lack of hedonistic pursuits or that alcohol is more expensive in Malaysia, but either way we feel it is better off without them! As you will see, much ... read more
