Second entry of the year, and second visit for Tiffany and I to Penang. Last time was just 4 years ago, we were on our way to dive Pulau Weh in Indonesia. It was a short stop, and we saw nothing at all! So this time, I decided to do it finally properly. The island is actually bigger than you think, mainly because it is often cloaked by traffic jams, making all move way more tedious than you wish they were! Most hotels are actually on the North Coast of the island, while the airport is in the South. There is a local bus to all these hotels from the airport, but he leaves only every to 60 to 80 minutes...I was not going to take that waiting time risk. So we ended renting a small ... read more

From Singapore we had a short flight with Tigerair north to Penang in Malaysia. Last time we came here was in 2012 to celebrate Chinese New Year. Being here in one of our favourite places in Malaysia felt great. We love the island not only for the famous food but also for the amazing temples, the nature and the super friendly people. As we got the information that our spiritual master would have a flight to Penang just 1 hour later, we waited at the airport together with some devotees from Penang. It was lovely to meet our malaysian family and we immediately felt close. They were really excited as most of them met Guruji for the very first time. It was a joyful welcoming and we were so thankful we could be a part of ... read more

Staying at Cititel Hotel, Georgetown, lovely hotel in central location. People are very friendly and helpful. the free shuttle called CAT {central area transit} stops opposite our hotel , its stop 7 and there are 19 stops scattered around the area including the Unesco World Heritage area where there are lots of buildings dating back to british colonial times alomgside temples, mosques and churches. all the buses start from the jetty, they're all very clean and air conditioned including the ones that operate outside the free area. Because we're here for over a week we bought a smartpass which gives us unlimited access on any bus 24/7 for one week at a cost of 30 ringgitts, about $10 AUD. We've been up to the National Park which also goes past the beach area of Batu Ferringhi. ... read more

Oh Mandalay, you're so hot and hectic, and we really tried to embrace you, but alas we had to leave you... The heat, the crazy busy streets we navigated on bikes dodging semis and motorbikes (no helmets), and lack of sidewalks or abundance of busted/sewer exposing sidewalks all added to the experience. We really did enjoy our time in Mandalay, but it wasn't our favorite place in Myanmar. On the first evening we arrived, we wandered around a bit and did my favorite thing, explored a huge supermarket. We decided to have a night in, our hotel room was quite nice and the market had wine that looked drinkable, convenience noodles (think giant cup of noodles one can buy in China or Chinatown), and chips! Success! The next day we rented bikes and headed to the ... read more

We had a day trip out to the Tropical Spice Gardens and a taxi took us on the 30 minute journey. We arrived at 9.30 and found that the next guided tour was 11.30, so we spent a couple of hours on the golden sandy beach just 100 yards away. The water was as warm as a bath so the kids were as happy as larry. Our guide was a Chinese botanist and his insights about plants as food, medicine and balancing the body in its environment was very enlightening and there is much to be said for the ancient chinese thinking. We wandered through the various levels of the gardens and smelt and saw a vast range of spices from vanilla and citronella to peppercorns and cinnamon. Ed and I had terrible sense of smell, ... read more

We left Cas in bed to sleep as she was feeling bushwhacked. Ed, Hat and I did a tour of old Georgetown and used their street art project a bit like a treasure trail. It was very hot so lots of stops were required to keep everyone from wilting. It surprised me just how much they enjoyed finding the murals.... read more

The cough and cold we all have is dragging on, so we rose late and then it was a scramble to get downstairs and wolf down breakfast. We knew we had a 4 1/2hr journey so my daysack turned into a poachers bag and was filled with pastries, breads, apples etc. The coach journey to Penang in the North turned into a bit of a marathon it was 8 hours later when we arrived in our hotel. Good learning for the future is to ask which buses are non-stop. The poachers bag was now empty.... Hotel Noordin Mews is an old colonial house in Georgetown, another UNESCO world heritage site. The kids were hungry so we nipped out to the local shopping mall, but there was nothing suitable. A 7 Eleven corner shop had to do ... read more

Penang, March 14-19, 2016 The bus from Melaka took a bit longer than expected. It arrived into the new bus terminal in the island late afternoon, and from there I jumped on a city bus (102) headed toward my hotel, which took another hour. After settling in, I walked the nearby beach where I was staying and ate at the food stall market in front of the hotel. The first full day on the island I headed toward the Penang National Park early in the morning. Two buses—the 101 and 102—make stops there, which make the park really convenient to visit. The forest/jungle is beautiful. There are several trails that head toward different types of attractions within the park. I decided to take the trail that headed toward the Muka Head Lighthouse. It is just over ... read more
