Back to Georgetown to visit a friend in Gleneagles Hospital, this time while I am here I did manage a little bit of a walk around and a meal in my favourite Line Clear restaurant, which is the oldest restaurant in Penang. The food in Penang is fabulous, ohh... the flavours! Cheap, friendly, fabulous outlooks make it a really enjoyable experience. Wandering around some of my old haunts actually it's nice to be back, you forget how quite Langkawi is and there's no comparison on the food front. They have proper fashion and malls here, proper hair dressers, public transport which is so easy and cheap, it's nice to get around with no hassle at all. The only option in Langkawi is taxi's which can make it expensive. After a couple of years on the island ... read more

Malaysia Eating at food stalls with Thai International's manager in Penang On Penang island we were hosted by the E&O (Eastern & Oriental)...a Colonial hotel built in 1885 (now closed). We were just seated for dinner in its stuffy, formal dining room when Thai International's Manager swept in. He was a jovial - and somewhat loud - Chinese Malay who said "you don't want to eat in this place" and took us out to a night market of food stalls serving an amazing array of seafood. Delicious and fun! We took a funicular up to a Buddhist temple, which had many snakes...kept sleepy by the smell of incense. Ron had a long and controversial interview with the Straits Times newspaper. Malaysia's population was primarily ethnic Malays, but Penang was mostly Chinese. A jolly tour operator from ... read more

Over the years, I have been to many historic hotels around the world. Some were intentional, some not. But the experience in most of them was worth the time and expense. Raffles Hotel in Singapore Home to the Singapore Sling, of course. E & O Hotel in Georgetown, Penang Started by the famous Sarkis Brothers, it is the "Orient Express" of hotels. The Peabody in Memphis You must see the duck walk, then head to BB Kings for some music. The Peninsula in Bangkok We did not fly in by helicopter, just to land on the roof. The Rasa Sayang* in Batu Ferringhi, Penang Yes, we had our own butler, and our tub was located on the balcony. The Fontainebleau in Miami The place where I met the greatest, Muhammad Ali. The Copacabana Hotel in Rio ... read more

We were so fortunate to book a Home Exchange at 8 Gurney in Penang. We had the entire 6000 sq. ft. 17th floor penthouse to ourselves! Lazy days spent at the pool, soaking the sun up at Batu Ferringhi Beach and exploring Georgetown, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our apartment was like a museum; Buddha statues inside and on the wrap around balcony, gorgeous Chinese pottery, Art pieces everywhere and Asian Bric Brac scattered throughout. In Penang, we are introduced to Grab, the company that put Uber out of business in Malaysia. Our condo is centrally located so grab fares to Batu Ferringhi beach is about $6 Can/18 RM and Georgetown $2 Can/6 RM. What a foodie paradise. So many restaurants and street food markets. We rarely spent more than $30 Can/90 RM for a dinner ... read more

Today we got the train from KL Sentral to Butterworth for Penang, another new experience. I had booked the tickets online and chosen seats behind each other so we could both be next to a window. The cost was £15.50 each, as it was only a tiny bit more for Business Class, and this was so worth it! We got to the station early and went in the food court upstairs. I think it’s quite new, I remember going downstairs before. Only a few places were open and it was cheap but very average. We had teh tarik and he did the pouring it from a great height thing, which makes quite a head on it. My roti telur (eggs on toast) were cold as she had said they weren’t mine and then realised they were. ... read more

After five days in the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, Linda and I took a bus five hours north to Butterworth on the coast, from where a small ferry (with passengers and cars sharing the top deck!) tackled the ten-minute crossing of the North Channel to George Town, on the island of Penang. Despite being uninhabited until around three centuries ago, Penang's past status as a vital port on the trade routes linking Europe, Africa and Asia has endowed it with a historical significance that – along with that of Melaka further south – rivals that of any other town in Malaysia, if not Southeast Asia. Indeed the central cores of both George Town and Melaka have been inscribed on Unesco's list of cultural World Heritage sites. With such a history of trade between empires ... read more

We were disappointed this morning to find that it was raining. But it was still very hot and humid, so we carried on with our plans to go ashore. Maybe 35 - 38 degrees we think. The cruise port in Penang is rather small, but they did have a good exchange bureau, so we used the €30 we got back from the Indian Rupees to buy a few Ringgits. As it was still raining, we thought the best thing to do was to try to catch a bus. Penang has a free bus service that goes around George town, so we thought that would be a great place to start. Unfortunately, there were so many other people on the bus by the time we found where to get on that the bus was totally full. No ... read more

My trip to Georgetown was a real adventure indeed. And not the kind I would like to repeat.. I took the ferry from Ko Phi Phi to Krabi and as I got to the port hitchhiking, I thought it would be just as easy to get a ride back into town. I did get one, but it was a creepy middle aged man who first wanted to make selfies, that I allowed, but then he tried several times to give me a kiss and when I tried to get out of the car he wouldn't let me. I thought "how can I be so stupid to go hitchhiking alone" even though I did it so many times before and never had a bad experience. Then he finally dropped me off at the bus station and I ... read more

To mi len zahralo do kariet, bo com som kukal letenky do gdansku moc ruzovo to z gruzinska, turecka resp grecka nevyzeralo. Davam si dvakrat roti s vajcom a cibulou, k tomu nesmie chybat klasicka omacka a samozrejme caj. Velmi chutny napoj. Bum bum a kura uz bolo bez hlavy. Ta ... read more
