I flew into Singapore after a fairly boring few days in Brisbane. Once you've visited the 30,000 museums and galleries, theres not a lot else you can do for free, I have memorised the Brisbane city layout now though, so if I come back with a work visa, I can always go for a job as a cab driver. Singapore! I arrived at about 9pm, and my airport pickup didn't come to pick me up, which was fine though, as it gave me the chance to use the Singapore public transport system, which is pretty damn good. The trains arrive on time, and they are spotless, in 4 days of using trains every day, only 1 smelt like urine. So I jumped on the train and headed to Little India. I wasn't able to get ... read more

Ok well I guess this could be a long one. It's been a while. I left Kuala Lumpur I don't know how many days ago and headed for the magnificent Perhentian Islands. The weather was great and I think I got the best tan ever. But that was basically it....hanging out on the beach. The internet was outrageously expensive so I got some catching up to do now. The first day on the island I ran into Mark and Amber, two Canadians I met on the beaches of Cambodia. That was cool cuz they had a huge group all getting together for supper that night. And there was a 'Pirate Party' on the neighbouring island so we were going to dress up like pirates and head that way. I spent about half an hour throwing together ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands June 7th 2006

The Cameron Highlands are about 1800 m above sea level so it's always cool and therefore a welcome relief from the heat of KL. Getting there though requires a drive up narrow roads with hairpin bends. Not for those who suffer from car-sickness. Add to that the crazy drivers (esp those driving 4WDs) who overtake when it's not really safe to do so makes the drive up quite scary. It was enough to bring out a liberal flow of expletives from Sean against those reckless drivers. Perhaps Sean was not in the best of moods as we had been in a car with no air-conditioning. Think of a sauna on wheels and you'll get the picture. It was raining 2 of 3 days we were there but we were still able to appreciate the beauty of ... read more

Being back in Kuantan is nice because it means we can actually stay in one place for a while. We managed to get a condo at a complex where we stayed last time we were here. It’s got a great view overlooking the South China Sea which means mornings are a front row seat to the sunrise. The first few days after we got here I was still waking up at 5:30, but it didn’t take long to get into the habit of sleeping in, especially since we have all been staying up late. It ‘s even worse now that the world cup soccer is on and the games start around midnight or 3am. I did manage to wake up before sunrise once and get a 10k run in. I woke up watched the sunrise the ... read more

Hellooo, we are kind of swimming away at the moment so it's perfect timing to update our blog.....we've already attempted updating our blog again once but it is getting to be a bit of a chore.....anyway we're stuck in the hotel at the moment while god flushes the toilet. Ok, here goes...After the Cameron highlands we headed south to Kuala Lumpur...we stopped in the china town part that had a really good market....original copy Rolex's for only 'cheap cheap'...we went to see the twin towers and we were lucky enough to get tickets to go up to the sky bridge. Like every big city K.L. has got a shopping centre which was perfectly airconditioned and was where we seemed to spend most of our time, we even had a few trips to the cinema. The bus ... read more

I didnt want to get up. I really didnt. But opening my eyes and facing the Kopi Susu was an inevitability. Richard, Junko, Anne, Marishka and myself all arranged to go for a trip around the island. Richard was as suprised to see me awake as I was him, with us having been the ones up til gone closing time at 04:30 last night. We hopped into the speedboat and then we were off to see some more of Tioman. First stop was snorkelling just north of Juara, before we stopped on Juara itself. Juara is the smallest and quietest town on Tioman, literally nothing more than a beach and a couple of shacks. It would be a great place to stay on a honeymoon, but perhaps a little quiet for the solo traveller. As we ... read more

Nasi Lemak makes a great breakfast. Coconut rice, chilli sauce and crunchy fish make an unlikely culinary delight, especially with the ubiquitous coffee (from a bag) with slug of condensed milk. After brekky it was time to head out for another days action packed diving. First stop was Fan canyon, and the second was around Soyah island. Two very good dives, but somewhat overshadowed by the night dive which was SPECTACULAR. It was the same site as yesterdays afternoon dive, but in the dark. The early part of the dive was nice, but pretty standard. The real greatness came tho when we headed across to the house reef, turned out lights out and started kicking around. A little like I experienced in Australia the water gave off bioluminescence when disturbed. Unlike in Australia this time I ... read more

Despite having spent a week in Bali I never had a real fresh roti at all, but today I remedied that. People seem to really appreciate it when you speak the local lingo, and the chap at the roti stall was no exception. I chatted to him in Pigeon Malaysian while he turned to small fat dough ball into a huge thin disk, then folded it in a fried it up to make the finished snack, served with a hot vegetable curry - a great start to the day. At about 10:15 I went down to the ferry terminnal which was now bustling unlike yesterday afternoon. I got a small overloaded shuttle out to where the larger boat was moored a little out to sea. The journey out was pretty uneventful (i.e. both pretty and uneventful!) ... read more

Hey All, So we've been really busy the last week or so. Taman Negara is a national park that's like 4000 square km of jungle. There's all kind of wild animals there like elephants and tigers. We didn't see any of them though cause you have to do over night treks and stay in these places called hides which are basically like caves with beds and rats and insects all over the place and even after all that horrible stuff you only might see some animals. So I was like no way!! To get there we took one of those longboats through the middle of the jungle for 3 hours. It was pretty cool cause we saw water buffalo and stuff but by the end of it our asses were broken!!! We ended up staying in ... read more

The Cameron Highlands was great cause it was soo much colder. A bit like home. It was the first time we could wear jeans and there was no mossies thank god. We're sick of being bitten! It's the biggest farming area in Malaysia and supplies Singapore aswell. We visited a rose garden which was amazing. There were thousands of different types of flowers. Then there was the tea plantation were the pickers only get paid 22 sen per kilo that's like 5 cent or something crazy like that! The tea is lovely though. Owned by some scottish family who live in KL. We also went to a strawberry farm were we had the most unreal strawberry milkshake, a bee farm, a market were we bought some delicious fruit and then we just kinda hung out the rest ... read more
