Hopped in a minivan for the ride from the Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara. However, to keep things interesting, the connecting bus broke down and we got to spend a couple of hours in nowhere Malayasia waiting for the repair. However, mysteriously the same thing happened to the group following ours the next day, so I think it is merely a means of explaining away a two hour wait. A group of us came down from the Cameron Highlands together, and found beds on the second try. However, we are quite lucky as spring break has begun so everybody is going on vacation. I have heard a number of horror stories of people unable to find rooms. One person is even camping outside a chalet in the owners' son's tent, because she couldn't find a room ... read more

After a day of relaxing, I awoke the next morning to a trail run with a Brit and an American also staying in the hostel's dorm. However, while running through the jungle I quickly learned that glasses are not the best equipment for that particular environment. For the first 10 minutes of the run I was fine, and then the lenses fogged up and the previous nights rain dripped on them. I quickly lost pace on the other two as I made my way blindly along the narrow jungle path. To add to the fun, small irrigation pipes wound along the trail, providing ample oppurtunities to slip and fall. Numerous times my right foot slid off the trail and into the ravine below, fortunately every time I was able to pull myself back onto the trail. ... read more

We arrived yesterday after a very rough 6hr journey- it reminded me of being back in Jamaica- soo many twists and turns! But as soon as we hit the mountains it felt as if we had moved into a different country. It was soo beautiful! and each time I thought, right this is it- were at the top we just seemed to keep on climbing! There is such a divers community up her- Hindu, Buddist, Taoist, Roman Catholic and Muslim, it is pretty much the same all around Malaysia I am told- everyone lives so well together. We are staying at the Cameronian Inn ( in the LP), we did check out Fathers Place ( which also has LP reccomendation) but were very disappointed, the rooms we basic and not very clean. When reading recent reviews ... read more

We arrived in Cameron Highlands yesterday afternoon after another long bus journey. I was really tired after getting up at 6am but really tried to stop myself from falling asleep as the views on the way up the mountains were beautiful. We arrived at Thana Rata in the afternoon and there were a few minibuses there for hotels that took you there for free. We'd been informed that Fathers Guesthouse was good so got into their minibus but when we got there it wasn't very nice at all - really really basic and on top of a hill all by itself so would have been a trek to get to town (and after the trek we had to do everyday from Had Rin when we stayed in that bungalow we thought maybe not!) So we ended ... read more

Hello again I apologise to those of you logging in regularly and not seeing any updates but it has been pretty hectic for us so far and we really have not had a chance to hit an internet cafe until now. We are in Surat Thani in Thailand, it's 7.30pm and we have tickets on the 11pm overnight ferry out to Koh Tao island where we be staying for 5-6 days. The plan is for me to do some diving (PADI Open Water course) and Stef will just laze around and do nothing ;-) We are in an Internet cafe now that is not wanting to play ball with loading pics so I hope this works. Below should be some great pics we have taken. The first is of a little girl at the Orangi Asli ... read more

Caution... entry not for children or those of weak stomach! Yesterday was probably the most fun day i have had thus far! I started the day out going on a guided tour of the northern part of Cameron. It was myself, two karens from Germany, Amanda from Australia and another young chap who didn't speak much. The girls were put in the back and the guys were in front and we started our trip in our "vip" land rover special edition with our humorous tour guide, Kumai. We visited the infamous BOH tea plantation and learned of the rich history of it's modest beginnings to how it became this huge empire that dominates all of Malaysia's tea industry. Us girls got to know each other and had some great laughs.. the ones that hurt your belly ... read more

I’ve discovered that, while traveling, you have a tendency to miss the silliest things. For instance, while in Georgetown I felt like I missed the cold and the rain (maybe it’s my Vancouver heritage shining through), so was quite excited when we left the heat for the misty Cameron Highlands. The highlands are (duh) high in the jungle and have an average daily temperature of (only!) 22 degrees, when we arrived, however, it felt infinitely cooler, plus it was raining. The novelty wore off after about 5 seconds. It was still a great place to visit, but harder to enjoy the jungley surroundings when the constant mist soaked you whenever you elected to leave the comfort of hostel, restaurant, or car, so instead of undertaking the jungle hikes we’d planned (whew, thought I’d have to get ... read more

All the stories I have read about the crazy bus drivers and the windy and narrow roads going 50mph are true! Fortunately i have made it to my destination (Cameron Highlands) safely, but i am still shaken by the experience! The two lane road was about the width of a US highway lane. There were no guardrails on the windy roads up the mountain and I was relieved to be on the left side of the road closest to the mountainside. I also don't think Malaysian buses are equipped with break pedals and I doubt these drivers qualify for any sort of health/life insurance as bus driving is a dangerous occupation! There were at least two times where i think we were turning a bend on two wheels. Backpacks were sliding to the opposite side of ... read more
