We left KL 5 nights on from arriving with no more to show from our visit than a 'Tag' watch and clean clothes (well to be fair, the photo of the petronas towers was nice). We enjoyed our time there if for no other reason than we felt relaxed, my stomach was getting better and Gills ear infection appeared to be getting better also. The next stop we'd decided upon was the Cameron Highlands. With it's cool mountain air and green slopes it was something to look forward to after the dirt and smell of the big city. The next stage seemed easy enough; we turned up to get a bus - which was full, so got the next one - an hour later. Turned up at Fathers guest house and found a room which wasn't ... read more

Arrived in Mersing to catch the ferry. The coach drive from Singapore was a little hairy - we think the driver was behind schedule, leading him to overtake at the most bizarre times (no visibility, blind bends etc). It was iether that or it's the Malaysian way - we'll find out later. As soon as we got off the bus we were herded into a travel agents, along with 20 other westeners, by a couple of persistant locals. We came out thee quarters of an hour later, and a host of Malaysian Ringits lighter. Unfortunately (we found out later) we'd managed to be talked out of our original plan to go to Salang and into a resort called Panuba - as the later was 'quieter' and still had lots of facilities and restaurants etc. In actual ... read more

Hey y'all, just came back from a 7-day excursion to Malaysia. Whether or not you like the country depends on where you go. Crime is rampant in Johor Bahru, a city in the southern part of the country. Kuala Lumpur is safer, but it's advisable not to walk alone at night, especially if you're female. Men on motorcycles will stare at you with devious eyes, hoping to snatch your purse or wallet and ride away. The first leg of the trip was a journey to the Cameron Highlands. The highlands are mountainous areas with embedded spaces of flat lands that are situated high above sea level. Plantations of all sorts are found here, from tea to honey to cabbage and to those found in your average vegetable gardens. The floral lifeform here is somewhat best described ... read more

These last couple days have been crazy. Yesterday we began the journey from Singapore to Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. We got on a bus from Singapore to the Malaysia border city Johor Bahru (JB). Singapore and Malaysia are separated by a long bridge, and the idea is to bus to Singapore immigration, get off the bus to get your exit stamp, then get back on the bus to cross the bridge to Malaysian customs. We got a little confused and ended up walking across the bridge. In JB a tour guide (aka - some random guy with pamphlets) gave us a ride to the bus station, and told us to follow some other random guy who would get us our tickets. We were a little nervous but we ended up on a greyhound bus to Tapah, ... read more

KL was just too humid so had to escape to someplace cooler, so we got the bus to Cameron Highlands. Stayed in these lovely little alumimum huts surrounded by lush tea plantations considerably cooler than KL. Perfect! I thought, however i got eaten alive by mozzies as there was no screens or nets provided. Eventually got to sleep, slept in and therefore missed the organised trips to the tea plantations and our options for independent hikes were pretty limited. The guesthouse staff were decidedly unfriendly and not exactly forthcoming with info, so we did a short hike by ourselves and that was the day gone. Went to the local shop to buy a mozzie net but they only sold this giant one and I am already carrying too much stuff so had another bad night. Decided ... read more

A little taste of Malaysia From Bali, I flew directly to Singapore (again) and spent the day wondering around the city (again). The next day I purchased an overnight train ticket to Kuala Lumpur (in Malaysia…which is north of Singapore). The whole day; and the train ride, where pretty much event free. So I arrived in Kuala Lumpur early in the morning (6am) dropped my bags off at a hotel, and decided to walk around and get a feel for the city. I was pretty disappointed. KL (Kuala Lumpur) seemed to be just another big city with even less things to do then Singapore. That was until I met a “nice” older man who started to chat me up. So here I am, it is about 8am and I am walking the streets. The older guy ... read more

so I'm still here in this beautiful place drinking tea... and eating strange malaysian fruit. I havn't quite worked up to the durian yet but I've tried the rambutan (this red hairy looking fruit sort of similar in taste to the lychee). went for a hike today back up to the highest point and got my foot caught in a bit of mud... oh well. I don't think my socks will ever be the same though. got lazy and decided to hitchhike back to town which was fun and actually safe. I'm heading back to KL tomorrow! random observations about malaysia: people eat with forks and spoons. no knives people drive on the left hand side of the road. the current female fashion is to wear a long one piece dress down to the calves and ... read more

So I've escaped from the big city of KL for a few days and gone to the Cameron Highlands. This is an absolutely beautiful place with rolling hills covered with jungle foliage and tea plantations. After taking a tour of a tea plantation this morning, I've become a bit disillusioned with flavoured tea. This stuff is the bottom of the barrel - its tea dust in a bag and infused flavours are added to cover up the taste of nothing! I think I'm going to have some real tea this afternoon with scones and locally made strawberry jam. ... read more

The route to Cameron Highlands is not an easy one, there are 653 corners traversed by the rickety buses in order to get there, and many find this too much for the stomach to take. Luckily I had a semi-decent bus, and the seven hour journey from KL had caused me to stop caring about the corners and the fear or travel sickness that they are usually accompanied by. The first thing that you notice in the Cameron Highlands is the temperature, a cool 24 Celsius - heaven. Then you notice the rain - every day at 2 'o' clock in the afternoon for three hours. The rain is so heavy it stops just about everything - at least for the tourists and backpackers anyway. The first morning I was there I took a tour of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Kuantan June 2nd 2001

We’ve just enjoyed three days in Kuantan on the east coast and facing the South China Sea. The bus drive from Jerentut was pretty boring and the drivers had their 30 minute meal break after 2 hours of travel which always make the bus arrive half an hour later than scheduled. The buses are scary to travel in as the drivers do - at least to how way of thinking - the most dangerous things. That day they sat on the tail of trucks piled high with logs - the windscreen was nearly touching them and the driver kept trying to pass the trucks but the road was often too narrow or there was traffic coming towards them. Quite a few times they passed as we were approaching blind corners. It was made worse by the ... read more
