18th Feb Cornflakes for breakfast mmm, not as good as home though, and a yummy banana shake. Just went into town (5mins walk) to get supplies like toilet paper as i have discovered that some of the hostels dont provide it! The girls booked themselves in for the "full day discovery tour" where you could break it up over an afternoon and then the next morning. We had a piece of cake and a cup of tea in the nice warm sun and the cool fresh air before they left for their afternoon tour. I continued to cook in the sun and catch up on journal writing which is begining to feel more like a chore. I picked a movie for the arvo - Cold Mountain, which i didnt really rate. I then watched some of ... read more

Water level ran nearly six feet higher the day I traveled up river towards Taman Negara National Park. After a brisk three hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur, I quickly realized that the Jungles of Malaysia was not the type of place that would have ATM machines on every corner and I’d literally be up shit’s creek without a paddle. Before boarding a glorified canoe with a canopy and a motor, the local booking agent was able to coerce the chef of bus station to give Royal and I a thirty minute ride into town to acquire some cash for the trip. Ringgits in hand, I began what is normally a two hour ride upriver but took nearly three and a half due to the speed of the current downstream. After waking from my nap aboard ... read more

Hey all, well a fast update on the situation here, after 3 weeks I'm still in Malaysia. After my short visit to Penang which I didn't like (didn't give it time either as I knew I had to go back to KL to meet Amanda and Chris (Swedish Dude) to go to Tamana Negara) I traveled to KL were I also met Dylan, another Canadian, who wanted to join us to Tamana Negara. Better to be with 4 as if you want to do a 4 day hike, you need a guide so cheaper if you go with 4....anyway, 2 days later arrived in TN and had a hostel with view on the river, a hamac etc... we took first a chill day were we sorted out all the permits, tents, food etc. The 4 days ... read more

In 2006, we have holidays on 30th and 31st January (monday and tuesday) due to Chinese New Year. I originally planned to clear my homework at home during the holidays, but my mum suddenly booked a tour to Genting and "dragged" me and my sister along. In the end, we had to bring our homework up to Genting... (My sister was more pathetic than me. She got a 3000 words essay on Asian economics to write.) Genting was very crowded (as expected, because it was Chinese New Year). In the end, to maximise our time, we went to the theme park in the early morning when the queues were still short... After lunch, we went back to the hotel room to do homework (and to avoid the "peak period" and the long queues). At night, after ... read more

Hey you all, ok, have some time to write an update. After 2 days walking around in Kuala Lumpur I decided to go to Pankor Island, a small island on the west coast. Had a fab time there, had a room with hot shower and a balcony! Met some dutch people, to be quit short what I did: - party on the beach with Dirty Dancing music (the music from the movie he...), beers and a nightswim afterwards - renting a motorbike and explore the island - rented a bike and had to go back after 30 min as the first gear didn't work.... - sit in the sun on the beach - met a local fisher and we all (5) went the next day with his boat to go and C them fishing, (first real ... read more

Since our last entry we have visited Penang, went back to KL and are now feeling quite chilly in the Cameron Highlands. We were in Penang for three days, one of which was spent lazing around a beach bar drinking nice cold Tiger beer - that's the life!! We also joined a day-trip on a boat, which took us out on a very rough sea - all on board said a number of prayers as it was one of those tiny Chinese wooden boats that seemed to dive into the waves sideways... But, we all survived and spent some time in a more quiet and relaxing area fishing and checking out "monkey beach', where there were...well...ehhh...monkeys! Very cute, but also a bit scary as they climb onto you to get to the food!! The third day ... read more

If I died and woke up in the Cameron Highlands, I wouldn't mind. This place is phantastic! I met some people at the guesthouse in Tanah Ratah, and together we climbed a couple of mountains and one tree, around 2000m high, with great views of the jungle-covered valleys and tea plantations. Today we visited a tea factory. It's much more relaxing than Taman Negara, due to the cooler temperatures and total lack of leeches. I have been hiking every day and the trails were really steep and challenging at times, making me go to bed early and satisfied. I was planning to head back up to Thailand tomorrow, but now it looks like I will go to Pulau Pangkor for Christmas, with 2 Dutch guys and an American. I wish y'all some merry merry holidays!... read more

I arrived in Kuala Tahan, Taman Negara, on Dec 13. It's wet season here, so the wheather promised to be less than reliable, but the first few days were actually excellent. While in the dry season the place must be packed with tourists, there were hardly any of them around now, giving the village a rather local athmosphere. My first little jungle adventure was the canopy walk, elevated up to 40 meters above the ground, a must-do out here. That night I met a swedish-english group of travellers, whom I joined on a 2-day hiking trip to one of the hides deep into the jungle, where you are supposed to be able to spot some amazing wildlife. The trail was about 13 km long, but that is jungle km, which means steep hills, fallen trees, wide ... read more

Russell - So we arrive in Taman Nagara to experience what nature has to offer. This is the oldest rainforest in the world having not changed significantly for an estimated 130 million years. I have tried to comprehend just how long that is but the best my brain can come up with is "That's very old!" which doesn't quite cover it. This landscape would have been familiar to the dinosaurs! We started with a quick trek to the canopy walkway which is suspended in the jungle 25 meters in the air, going through the tops of the trees. It was an absolutely amazing experience, if a little scary as the walkway was actually constructed from aluminium ladders with a plank on them. The jungle is so dense you can't actually see very far apart from a ... read more

Well after another early start and long bus journey we arrived in The Cameron Highlands. Based in the Centre of the Peninsua at an elevation of at least 1500m this is the garden of malaysia and the most extensive hill station...and also the coldest place on earth (well in Malaysia at least) It was freezing here! We've had to put socks, proper shoes (ones that constrict my toes) and up to 3 tops at a time on whilst being here (and its actually only about 20 degrees at lowest, but have become acclimatized to the heat now!) Nonetheless, it's beautiful and a refreshing change and well worth freezing our diddlies off for. The drive was incredibly beautiful - a mix of tea plantations, lush greenery and jungle. All washed down with a healthy dose of rolling ... read more
